November 11th, 1939

I love this “fresh” look ofJean Arthur. It’s a simple vintage look that looks good on a variety of complexions. I promise that the orangey lip will make blue eyes pop. To get this look:

FACE: Apply a liquid foundation such as Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup and blend. Apply concealer if needed. A stick concealer like NARS Concealer is nice for the under eye area and blemishes. Apply a pressed powder such as Neutrogena Healthy Skin Pressed Powder in your shade. An orange blush will brighten the complexion and it will make cool eye colors pop. I would of recommended NARS Blush in Taj Mahal (RIP)…try Shu Uemura Glow On Blush in P Orange 53. This is an intense orange shade like NARS Taj Mahal. I recommend for pale to medium skin tones to apply this with a fan brush or a highlighting dabber brush such as Lancome Brush #3, any brush that picks up less pigment. Apply a small amount to cheeks and blend and blend. If you feel it looks uneven blend with your pressed powder. I love orange blush. It looks scary but I promise that it works on a variety of skin tones.

EYES: Jean has thin penciled in brows. Brush brows in their place with a brow comb and fill in with a brow pencil like MAC Impeccable Brow Pencil. Eye shadow is so simple. Take a nude-to-you duo. For a complexion like Jean’s try Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Duo in Taupe Minerals. Take the lightest beige shade and apply from lash line to brow. In the crease, apply a medium brown shade. Line top lash line closely with a black eyeliner pencil like Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in Black. Jean is wearing false eye lashes. If you want to avoid that hassle, curl lashes and apply a lengthening mascara like NARS Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara. I would apply a few coats to top lashes and only one coat to bottom lashes.

LIPS: Lips are so simple. Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencil in Genre is the perfect product for Jean’s look. Just take the pencil and stay in the lines.

Kay Francis 1934

I love this magazine of Kay Francis. The colors are beautiful. To get this polished 30’s look do the following:

FACE: Apply a medium coverage liquid foundation such as Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Liquid Foundation. Apply concealer where needed. L’Oreal Infallible Concealer is a nice all-purpose concealer. Lightly dust a translucent powder over the face such as Coty AirSpun Loose Powder. Cheeks are very pink. Apply a hot pink powder blush like NARS Powder Blush in Desire to the apples of cheeks. A little bit of this shade goes a long way.

EYES: Brows are thin and penciled in. For a “waxy” authentic 1930’s brow look, apply a brow pencil and do not blend. I recommend Covergirl Brow Shaper. There is a Midnight Black for Kay’s look. Use Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Duo Eye Shadow in Brown Eyes. Apply the lightest shade, a soft warm ivory, from lash line to brow bone. Take the darker brown shade and blend into the crease. Take a small eyeshadow brush and line the bottom lashes with the darker brown shade used in the crease. Take a sheer gold shadow such as Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Glimmer Eyeshadow in True Gold, and apply to the lid. Apply it sweeping from the side closest to the nose to the center of the lid. This creates a “glowing” look. Apply a brown kohl liner for a smoky look. Try something L’Oreal HIP Kohl Liner in Brown Kohl. Take a fine liner brush and dip it into the powder. Line eyes and smudge with a shadow brush. Apply liner to top and bottom lashes. Keep applying enough to you reach your desired level of “smokiness”. Apply a few coats of a black/brown mascara such as Covergirl Lash Blast Lengthening Mascara to top and bottom lashes.

LIPS: Lips are red and glossy. Apply a sheerer red such as Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Red Saint. Apply a red lip gloss with shimmer. Apply Lipstick Queen Big Bang Theory Illusion Gloss in Energy over lipstick. A sheerer option is to use NARS Lip Gloss/Lip Stain Duo in Moon Fleet/Indian Red Coat with the stain and follow with the gloss.

This pic of Arleen makes me want to dye my hair bright red again! I love everything about this look. It’s classic and who doesn’t want to be a ravishing redhead?

FACE: Arleen’s complexion is flawless. Isn’t it amazing what some airbrushing can do? To get an airbrushed look, apply concealer where needed. Almay Line Smoothing Concealer is nice for the under eye area.  Apply a matte foundation such as MAC Studio Stick Foundation in your shade. I love the ease of a foundation stick. Apply a small amount of loose powder to set foundation. I love the packaging and price of Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder. Cheeks are lightly dusted with a pretty pink powder blush. Try something like Rimmel Mono Powder Blush in Pink Rose and apply with a large and fluffy blush brush.

EYES: Brows are perfect. Use a brow kit like Urban Decay Brow Box in your shade. First fill in brows with a powder and then brush them into place with a brow wax. Eye shadow is nude but warm. I love the colors in Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Beige Massai. Take the lightest almost ivory shade and apply all over, from lash line to brow bone. Apply the lightest beige brown from lash line to crease. Take the warm bronze and brush into the crease. Apply a bit of this warm bronze on the bottom lash line but only halfway. Take the deepest center chocolate brown shade. Use it as a liner on the top lashline and bottom lashline, applying with a stiff thin, flat brush. Apply false lashes or apply a few coats of your favorite mascara. One of my favorites is Chanel Multi-Dimensionnel Mascara in Extreme Black.

LIPS: You need more than bright red hair for this look. You need bright red-orange lips. Make sure lips are in healthy condition and slightly moist from a lip balm. Apply a lip liner if you are wanting a “clean” line. Try L’Oreal Colour Riche Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in Timeless Coral around the lip line.  Apply Guerlain KissKiss Lipstick in Red Strass, this is one of my favorite lipsticks . To add shine, apply a sheer red shimmery lip gloss like The Body Shop Hi-Shine Lip Treatment in Red Gleam. Apply it with a lip brush. How ravishing?

Such talent and style! I love Stevie Nicks. I find that she is one of my accidental style icons. Somebody that I’ll see a picture of and realize that I wore an outfit very similar without even knowing. It must be that closet gothness that we both share. To get this look:

FACE: First apply concealer where needed, Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Concealer. Apply a satin, light-weight foundation like Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish Foundation in your shade. Dust a translucent powder over foundation to prolong wear and absorb oilies, Almay Pure Blend Loose Finishing Powder. Cheeks are very nude with a slight hint of color. Take a fluffy blush brush and apply a color like Estee Lauder Signature Silky Blush in Nude Rose.

EYES: Well, we really can’t see the brows in this picture but I can imagine that they are groomed into place with a clear wax like Anastasia Brow Fix Clear Wax Pencil. Eyes are all about looking awake and wide-eyed. Apply a slightly tinted eyeshadow base like Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Shadow Base all over the lid. From lash line to crease apply a white eyeshadow like Clarins Single Eyeshadow in White Marshmallow. Take a warm brown eyeshadow and lightly blend it into the crease and on the bottom lash line, something like Covergirl Eye Enhancers Eyeshadow in Brown Smolder. Apply a pencil eyeliner very closely to the top lash line in a dark brown shade. I like the smoothness of Clinique Quickliner for Eyes in Dark Chocolate. Apply a few coats of mascara to top lashes and one coat to bottom lashes, a formula like Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara will do.

LIPS: Lips are shiny and a rusty bronze shade. Apply a lip gloss in a bronze shade like Pur Minerals Pout Plumping Lip Gloss in Bronze Sassolite or Iman Luxury Lip Shimmer in Copper Tone (not pictured), whatever you use, it needs to be super glossy.

That’s it. Oh, don’t forget those finger tips! use something like SpaRitual Nail Lacquer in Inner Sanctum or Butter London Nail Lacquer in Aston (not pictured). I think this look demands an ambery perfume. I’m thinking something like Regina Harris Amber Vanilla Perfume Oil, doesn’t the bottle just look like something Stevie would have?

To get Bianca’s look with Kevyn Aucoin products:

FACE: First even out complexion with The Liquid Airbrush Foundation in your shade. Apple concealer where needed, try The Sensual Skin Enhancer. Apply a light dusting of powder like The Gossamer Loose Powder. Apply a powder blush to cheek bones, a deeper rose brown such as The Pure Powder Glow in Neolita. Apply The Sculpting Powder into the hollows of the cheek. Blend and blend.

EYES: Bianca’s brows are thick but well managed and sculpted. Fill in and brush brows into place with The Precision Brow Pencil in your shade. Use The Essential Eyeshadow Palette in #2. Take the peach shade and apply it from lash line to brows. Take the medium brown and blend it into the crease. Take the charcoal black shade and blend it around the lash line both top and bottom. Apply a dab of the ivory shade right under the arch. Curl lashes and apply lots and lots of  black mascara.

LIPS: Lips are glossy with full color. Apply foundation or concealer over the lips to create a blank canvas. Take the Flesh Tone Lip Pencil in Bare, a warm brown, and trace your lip line. Apply The Liquid Lipstick in Ondine, a patent red shade. The foundation/concealer will help this glossy shade stay on longer. Have I mentioned that I love this shade?

I have always imagined Bianca wearing YSL Rive Gauche EDT. I really think with a spritz of this, you’ve completed this disco ready look.

Again, I have fallen for a Guerlain color collection. This is of no surprise for this happens quite frequently. I love the Summer Splash collection, it is so beachy without being overly “tan” and “bronzed”. The packaging is beautiful and glamorous. The company describes this collection as “a mermaid basking under the sun.” I like the sound of that.

EYES: I have found a new favorite. I absolutely love The Loose Powder Kohl in Lagoon Blue. This is a shimmery sea blue with a hint of gold. It is a “warm” blue. It really works with my complexion. If you think you can’t wear blue, I bet you can wear this. I am light with warm undertones with blue eyes, I imagine that this would also work well with medium complexions with brown eyes. It goes for $34 and I think it is worth every penny. I mean just look at the packaging! There is an awesome eyeshadow quad, Ombre Éclat. It comes in a nice rose gold shaded compact with 4 shimmery shadows: white, rose gold, tan, and aqua. Once again, this is a very kind color combo for my complexion. I think natural redheads, dyed redheads could pull this one off too. It goes for $58. I think it is worth it. The formula is so smooth. The Le 2 Guerlain Waterproof Mascara is out at $35. It’s even available in a teal blue! I haven’t tried this. I’m trying to spend less on things like mascara. The single shadows, Ombre Éclat are available in special shades: Pearly White, a white gold shimmer, and Pearly Brown, a nice sandy brown shimmer. These go for $34.

LIPS: There is the Kiss Kiss Stick Gloss in 3 shades. This is a great formula that provides shiney, sheer color in a stick. There is Corail des Mers, a glossy coral, Grenades Des Iles, a brownish/coppery rose, and Rose Des Sables, a warm rose. These go for $30 and are in the pretty summer packaging.

FACE: It isn’t my little pearls of perfection, but it is so nice. I am in love with Illuminating Powder in Poudre des Sables. This is a pressed shimmer powder housed in a mother of pearl like packaging. The print resembles a shell and it is a mix of gold, rose, sable, tan. It is a flattering shade even for paler gals. It goes for $65. The Blush 4 Éclats Sculpting Blush has been relaunched. This is a great formula available in a variety of shades with a nice, soft fragrance. It goes for $48 and provides a nice glow. There is also an Illuminating Pressed Powder relaunch. These are like pressed, super shimmery Météorites. It is lovely with pearly shades of beige and pink. It reminds me of seashells and goes for $65. These are both great complexion enhancers.

Overall, as you can tell, I love this collection. I know I am biased because it really works for my complexion! Hey, we all get lucky sometime, right? This collection is available at most venues that carry Guerlain such as Nordstrom and other department stores in your area.

I wanted to love this product so badly. The tin is adorable and I love the fragrance and flavor of violets and violet candies. Unfortantely, this is not what I wanted it to be. The tin is very cute in person, nouveau and adorable. However, I found it very difficult to open because it lacks a pronounced “lip”. The lip balm is more of a gloss and has the texture of Vaseline. This didn’t bother me. This makes it long lasting and perfect for “marninating” lips before applying a bold shade of lipstick. It feels nice on the lips. The violet fragrance really isn’t there. It doesn’t smell like fresh violets or like candied violets. I really don’t know what it is supposed to smell like, sweet? I don’t know what it is, but I dislike it. After sniffing other tins, I found that I like them better (such as red currant and vanilla) but the tin is still annoying. This retails for $6 and is availbale on beautyhabit.com. (If you are interested.)

Esther Williams January 1955 found on classichollywoodbios.com

I am in love with Esther’s untouchable red lips. This is such a glamorous look that is surprisingly easy to achieve. Make Up For Ever products are being used and all products are available on sephora.com.

First, even out complexion with a matte foundation if your skin is on the shiny side. Apply Mat Velvet + Mattifying Foundation in your shade. Apply a concealer to areas of need, using a product such as Full Cover Concealer. Dust with a loose powder to increase foundation wear and to absorb all those pesky oils. I like Super Matte Pressed Powder. The skin is matte but a bit of “highlighting” is necessary to make the complexion glow. Take a broad shadow brush and brush Powder Blush in Pearly Pale Pink down the nose and above the brow bone. Apply a perfect pink blush to the apples of cheeks such as Powder Blush in Candy Pink. Highlight cheekbones with a little more of Pearly Pale Pink.  ( I must add that both of these shades are some of my all time favorites for complexion enhancing of pale to medium skintones.)

Fill in brows with a brow pencil in your shade. Apply a matte ivory shadow from lashline to brows for an eye opening look. I like Eyeshadow in Eggshell. Take the Powder Blush in Pearly Pink and line it under the brows. Blend downwards with a fluffy brush. Line top lashline with a nice black eyeliner such as Aqua Eyes Eye Pencil in Mat Black. Next, curl lashes. You can apply false lashes or lots of mascara to bottom and top lashes. I love the Individual Lashes in Elizabeth.

The lips are the showstoppers for this look. I would apply foundation or concealer to the lips for longer wear to even out the tone. The concealer will help the color from bleeding around the lip line. Apply Glossy Full Couleur Lip Gloss in #1, a bright, shiny red, with a lip brush. Emphasize your lip line. Apply as many coats as needed to achieve that full-coverage red look. A would say that 2 coats should do.

No look is complete without fragrance. I recommend a red hot fragrance such as Guerlain Samsara.

I feel that this color is such a huge seller because it is so dark in the tube. Women want to feel daring and bold. They want to feel like they would actually wear a dark lipstick even though they most likely wouldn’t. Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey is that middle of the road shade. It looks dark and daring but it is really pretty sheer and can be worn anywhere. It comes in a slender and sleek tube. The formula is not a lipstick and not a gloss. Well, so it claims. In my eyes it is a sheer and somewhat sticky and not as long wearing lipstick or a non-sticky and  long-wearing lip gloss! The color is a beautiful deep wine “stain”. It looks fresh and it is truly seasonless. It really adjusts to most skintones. It can look a bit more berry than wine. It plays with your skin’s undertones. It has worked with every color that I have ever dyed my hair. It retails $14. I am never without a tube. I love the way it feels and I love the flawless, everyday shade.

I feel I can safely say that pink is the hot color for spring 2009. And if it isn’t pink then it is coral. Prescriptives managed to use both of these hot shades for their spring look thinking about the cool and warm undertones of their customers. Just like the name says, In Bloom, this collection is inspired by pretty blooming flowers. The collection isn’t very “exciting” or original as far as inspiration goes because we all think of flowers when we think of spring. But, they are nice and it is nice to have a little bit of color after months of gloom.

EYES: There are 4 new Eye Color Duos. They come in a pretty pink and coral package. All are inspired by bold blooms. There is Sunflower for the Y/O gals ( I believe the most common undertone). It is a flattering shimmery beige and bronze that will really make blue eyes pop. There is Marigold for R/O. It is a warm, coraly pink duo shimmer. There is Petunia for R. It has a soft pink and reddish, coppery hard to explain shade. And there is Lily for the B/R group. It is a pretty soft pink and lavender shimmer. I think it is what the model above is wearing. I bet it would look awesome on hazel or green eyes. All of the duos retail for $24. Two Perfect Every Line Gel Eyeliner has been relaunched in Cocoa and Eggplant. These retail for $17.50 and are a really nice product. Two Softlining Eye Pencils have been relaunched in Jet (black) and Cocoa. These retail for $17.50.

LIPS: There are 4 new Lipshine glossy lipsticks. There is Zinnia for Y/O. It is a sheer and shiny coral. There is Posy for R/0 and it is a sheer warm hot pink. There is Tulip for R and it is a sheer blue raspberry. There is Tuberose for B/R and it is a sheer and lovely soft rose. These retail for $17.50 and create a perfect and effortless, one step pout.

FACE: There are 2 Cheek Color Duos. They are powders with two shades and they come in the same compact as the eyeshadows but they have a pretty flower imprint. There is one for warm skins with two shimmery shades or coral and one for cool skins with two pretty pink shimmer shades. These retail for $24.

Overall the collection is “fresh” and I do really like the Lipshines because they are so easy to wear. They are very “work” and “weekend” friendly. The eyeshadows blushes are OK but they don’t blow my mind. I do like numerous options becaues right now my hair is dyed red and these pinks aren’t always so friendly. At least I have a coral option.
