January 2009

I tried telling my job that I am really an Incan princess but they didn’t buy it. I thought it was a great scheme but it didn’t work. Just works for Yma because she is convincing. I on the other hand wear false lashes and red lipstick for no apparent reason. Yma is my favorite Incan princess. I hope one day I can grow up and be just like her.

To get the look apply foundation and concealer as needed. A matte foundation really looks nice for this look. Apply something like Clarins Truly Matte Foundation and a little bit of Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch Concealer. Powder really isn’t needed unless you have a major issue with oil. Brows are perfect and penciled in. Yma went for the dark brow look, my favorite. Pencil brows in with something like Revlon Brow Fantasy Pencil and Gel in Black if you have dark hair. Then, sculpt the brows into place with the tar colored gel. Apply foundation to lids to even out the tone and absorb oil. Apply a matte, nude eyeshadow all over the lid. Try something like L’Oreal Wear Infinite Single Eyeshadow in Seashell. This look is all about the liquid liner and false lashes. Apply a liquid liner in a cat-eye look, extending out on the top lashline. Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner Liner in Blackest Black creates a nice thick line. Apply a lovely strip of thick, black false lashes. There are many brands on the market. Now, to the bold lips. Line lips with Avon Glimmersticks Lip Liner in Red Brick to keep lipstick from bleeding. Apply Victoria’s Secret Perfect Lipstick in Slow Burn, a bright red. Go around the mouth with a Q-tip with a little bit of makeup remover if you just happen to draw out of the lines. Cheeks are pretty sheer and just have a hint of color. Apply Lancome Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose.  Fragrance is difficult for me to decide for this look, I’m thinking something like Molton Brown Davana Blossom. Now you are the Incan princess that you deserve to be.

If you want an herbaceous smelling expensive body wash then this is it. I really like Borghese products. I use many of them. I love the smell of this product. It is very invigorating. It contains many essential oils but to me it mainly smells of thyme, lavender, and comfrey. It really smells of rosemary too but that isn’t even an ingredient. So I think it is the thyme that is really stealing the show. It has a nice unisex fragrance. It also contains chamomile and patchouli but those are very faint in comparison to the other herbs. It is a beautiful spa, teal blue soap. It doesn’t really “foam” in my opinion. I mean, yes, it foams but it isn’t like Mr.Bubbles or anything. It really feels “clean” because of its scent and the fact that it contains sea salt. It makes the skin feel invigorated and purified. So, saying that, it is like a day at the beach. Your skin feels really smooth but it needs moisture badly! If you are dry, you’ll need a strong, greasy body cream after using this. It comes in a nice shower friendly pump bottle. I really liked to use it in the summer because it felt so fresh and my skin wasn’t as dry as it was in the summer. Then I lived in the South where it got to 100 degrees and I drove an old Chevy with no air conditioning. Hell; I think that is what they call that experience. This stuff managed to make me feel clean. Of course any shower would if you would sweat like I would. But, one day this gel turned into liquid. I had it in the shower and never took it out. An 1/8 of it was left and it was just water like, it still smelled good and foamed, it was just really weird. Has that happened to anyone else? But, anyways. It is a bit pricey for $32 for 16 ounces. However, Borghese always has wonderful gift sets and have GWPs a few times a year. This has a nice herbal fragrance. It’s expensive but it is like being at the spa everyday and that ain’t cheap. It can be purchased at drugstore.com.

Sometimes I buy things and I really don’t know why I did. This little Eau de Toilette spray is one of those things. It was cheap, $5 for less than an ounce spray. It was summer and I thought for some reason that I would like to smell like strawberries. Why? I have never wanted to smell like strawberries but I guess I thought it would smell fresh for summer. Fruit smells are so difficult to replicate. I know when I added this to my cart I was thinking of farmer’s markets strawberries, slightly ripening and softening in the little baskets under the warm summer sun. I could smell their sickly sweetness that was just strawberry. I know that capturing a fruit is virtually impossible but I thought that it couldn’t go that wrong. I just wanted the “memory” or the “atmosphere” of strawberry. This kind of does that. It is sweet, but not as disgusting as strawberry Jolly Ranchers or big globs of strawberry bubble gum but it does come close. This is sweet and not very realistic. It smells of strawberry in an artificial sense. I’m not upset, I think I payed less than $5 for it. I’ve bought Escada fragrances that were more disgusting. This fixes that berry fix and did teach me a lesson. This would make a nice EDT spray for a little girl or even a teen girl. Or for someone that likes those Escada fragrances that I speak of. I also want to add that strawberries are trying to kill me as I found out this past weekend over a pound of ripe strawberries that I am allergic to them. Argghh! So maybe I’ll come to love this fragrance since I can’t enjoy the real thing.

I must learn to stop purchasing fragrances unsniffed and buying for packaging alone. I bought this fragrance in the fall because I wanted a dark, moody fragrance. I wanted a leather or tobacco fragrance. So, I found this on beautyhabit.com (it’s at b-glowing.com too) and fell in love with the raven and of course it’s semi-goth name, Poe’s Tobacco. It is described as having tobac, tea leaves, amberwood, and autumn apple. I thought that I had hit the jackpot. That name and that description were exactly what I was craving and the price was amazing. It is $28 for 1 ounce. I thought of sweet dried tobacco, dried black tea, amberwood, and sickly rotting golden apples. I wanted a gothic, dark perfume.

I got this in the mail, quickly I may add from the lovely gals at Beautyhabit. The bottle is cute and simple. It’s kept beautiful by a cute and cheap and ultra trendy sticker. I am not complaining, it was under $30. The name sounded wonderful. I couldn’t wait to spray it on, wrap myself in a black cashmere and silk wrap, read Poe in my Eames chair with a cup of rose black tea. I sprayed this on and on this moody, rainy and foggy, typical Pacific Northwestern day, springtime happened! This fragrance isn’t bad but it isn’t what I expected at all. It was far from goth. It was super “green” and alive, femme, and full of flirtatious energy. This scent was not the Cleopatra eyelined beatnick but the fun and outgoing, outdoorsy girl next door! Talk about packaging and name gone to waste! It’s funny because the actual scent isn’t bad at all. I like it but it just doesn’t fit. It is like those couples you see together and go what? They don’t match. This is it. The name, the packaging, and the fragrance don’t work together. The fragrance is lovely and perfect for spring, It is heady but still manages to be green. I don’t smell the tobacco at all. I smell fresh green tea leaves. This is a fragrance for the green tea fragrance crowd. It isn’t very woodsy. It is very white floral, green tea, and fresh cut grass. It is vaguely fruity and appley but in a chamomile apple tea way. This is a spring day. It is flowers blooming in morning dew just when the grass was cut for the first time this season. It’s sunshine so bright and you don’t have your sunglasses with you.  Not goth! In fact, this reminds me of Avon’s mark Earth that I have wrote a review about. This stuff just smells “green”. It isn’t moody. I wanted dried roses, smoky incense, sweet and dried pipe tobacco and decaying logs. Nope, this is too friendly. It does wear for a long time which was a bummer the day I got it because I didn’t want to smell like fun spring days. It wears for hours. I haven’t worn it since I got it. It hasn’t fit the “mood”. I know this is something I will use up this spring. Because it is very green and pleasant without being Chanel #19. It is floral without being Chanel #22. It is nice. It will get compliments. It just doesn’t work with the name and packaging. So for now, it is in the Edwardian secretary waiting for springtime. Until then, I’ll be wearing the heavy leathery and patchouli scents. This can be purchased for $28 at b-glowing.com.

I love this stuff. It wears for a long time and it doesn’t crease! You can’t say that about every cream shadow on the market. This stuff comes in a cool glass pot and a little goes a long way. It is a creamy super shimmery formula that once applied to the lid turns more powdery and budge proof. It looks wonderful with powder shadows layered over and it makes a great shadow base. They do not make the lids feel oily. There are alot of colors to choose from. I have a few. I really like Goldlights which is a super shimmery Gold Finger worthy gold and my favorite. It looks great with my blue eyes and with a tan (which I don’t have). I like Aqua Shimmer which is a medium super shimmery aqua. It looks wonderful alone or used with a liner brush as a fun liner. I have Whitelights which is a silvery shimmery white. It makes a great eyeshadow base and it looks great alone with bold lipsticks. Violet Visions is another nice one that is a medium purple. This one makes a great liner too especially when worn with bright magenta lips. They retail for $23. Keep the lid on them tight so that they don’t dry out. So far all of mine are just as nice as the day I got them, no drying or anything. But, I am a weirdo about keeping them sealed!

Maybe it is because I am a closet goth. But, I love the cool toned grapey purple lip look. I love a matte purple with really minimal eye makeup. I love the blue-ish tinted lip whitening sheer violet lip glosses with loud pink eyes. I love a purple hued lip stain with warm, coral eyes. I love it all. But, seriously, this is a difficult shade to wear and a difficult shade to find. It is so frustrating. So that is why I am sharing what I have found with you.

Lipstick: I love a purple lipstick look with minimal eye makeup. That bare even, mascara less look, if the purple is deep enough. I also like it in an 80’s way if the eyes are done a nice, light baby pink with a medium toned purple lip. I have even mixed an almost white purple lipstick for myself to wear with dark, dark eyes. I looked a bit dead but hey, I’ll try anything in the name of fashion. I find that when I find a purple I like, I better buy it because chances are it won’t be around long. Rimmel made an amazing one. It was truly deep and purple but it was amazing because it had lots of silver shimmer. I bought like 10 tubes, which was good because I have never seen it since. It was like I purchased what all the company had. Dior used to have an amazing one too, but it is no more. Even MAC is lacking in this area. However, MAC has two deeper ones that I like. Cyber is a lovely almost black purple but it is very difficult to work with. It is a satin finish which is stupid. It is very difficult to keep uniformed even with foundation on the lips. It wants to gather in certain areas. Your lips have to be flawless and baby bottom soft for it to wear evenly too. But man, once you get it to work it looks amazing. I also like Rebel which is a more on the berry side or purple. It looks nice with that nude eye makeup look. NYX has a pretty good purple selection. They have in their Black Label the shade Seductive which is a medium purple. They have a super shimmery shade in the Diamond Sparkle Lipstick, Sparkling Orchid. This one is a bit to berry pink on me but if you put a black gloss over it, it looks amazing. In their classic formula they have a few nice shades: Orpheus which is a muted grape, Pandora which is a flashy magenta violet, and Iced Lavender which is a super pale and shimmery purple that looks great over other shades. NYX has a great Lipstick Pencil in Vixen which is a deep, dark and gothic purple. Manic Panic has a few goth friendly shades in Black Rose which is a deep, deep purple berry matte and Tramp which is a medium purple matte. Since these are matte, the lips must be very smooth. They have a beautiful pearly purple in Plum Passion. Black Radiance has two nice Perfect Tone Lipsticks in Go Girl Grape which is a grape Kool-Aid and Majesty which is more of a berry kissed plum. Sometimes Sephora brand gets nice pure purple shades. Currently they have Lip Attitue Star in Audaciaous Violet and Plum Vertigo (what is so glam about vertigo anyways?) Victoria’s Secret has an easy to wear pink purple in their Perfect Lipstick in Stiletto. I call it the “work” purple.

Lip Gloss: MAC has a Lipgelee in Moistly which really isn’t much of a purple, but more of a berry. It is very sheer and looks nice with rust eye makeup. NYX has a Sheer Gloss in Lavender Note which is a pale lavender shimmer. It wears nicely over pinks. There are two nice NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Purple Rain a lovely pure purple and Orchid which is another one of those berry, fuchsia hybrids. There is a NYX Sheer Tube Lip Gloss in Lilac which reminds me of MAC’s Moistly. Black Radiance has a nice sheer lipstick in Vogue Vixen but because of my pale skin and the fact that this is sheer it looks a little too pink on me. Stila has a Lip Glaze in Black Cherry this is a bright orchid purple fuchsia shade. Shu Uemura has an amazing Gloss Unlimited Lip Gloss in PR 059 N, it is a deep and shimmery royal purple. It looks amazing alone or layered over those pinkish purple lipsticks to make them more purpley. Shu Uemura also has a super sheer lip gloss glaze in the Gloss Lacquer in Irrational Purple. It is just a hint of purple and looks nice with deep, dark eyes.

Lip Pencil: MAC has an OK Lip Pencil in Magenta which is a vivid pinkish purple. It looks nice colored in the entire lip with a frosty pinkish gloss over it. NYX has the Long Pencil in Deep Purple and the Slim Pencil in Deep Purple and Purple Rain. These are my favorite and the most budget friendly. Manic Panic has two nice lip pencils in Deadly Nightshade which is a deep and dark purple and Ultra Violet which is a vivid purple. Max Factor has a High Definition Lipliner in Purple. I also find that a cheap little eyeliner does the same thing.

Purple lips are hard to find and you ever find one please let me know. I usually find them in cheaper brands (NYX, Wet N Wild), brands made for woman of “color” (Black Radiance, Iman, Fashion Fair) and sometimes super high end French makeup will launch one (Dior, YSL, Guerlain.) It’s weird. I just really want a super dark purple lipstick dipped in tons of gold shimmer. And I can’t find it!

I can’t stop buying this little things. My most recent addition is apart of the Les Divines Alcôves Presque Nue: In the Nude Almost. It comes in the classis little paper, travel ready tube. But, this tube is a soft robin’s egg blue with adorable poppies all over it. I love the solid formula because it really sticks with my skin and has a very light, initmate fragrance. Presque Nue is a soft white musk. It claims to have lots of other notes such as bergamot (what fragrance blend doesn’t have bergarmot?), ylang-ylang, jasmine, sandalwood and other stuff. Trust me. All you are really going to smell is a classic, light, clean white musk. Yes, it is synthetic smelling. White musk isn’t a naturally occuring note. This is a very clean musk that doesn’t smell cheap. (No, I’m not talking to you Coty.) This musk manages to be very feminine, think Egyptian musk oil or Philosopy Amazing Grace, and it manages to be almost masculine due to its clean almost aquatic natures. It is soft and blends well with other florals. Especially, white florals. I really like this one. It is pretty simple but smells clean without being all Davidoff Cool Water. I thought that it wore for a long time. It can be purchased at b-glowing.com.
