Kay Francis 1934

I love this magazine of Kay Francis. The colors are beautiful. To get this polished 30’s look do the following:

FACE: Apply a medium coverage liquid foundation such as Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Liquid Foundation. Apply concealer where needed. L’Oreal Infallible Concealer is a nice all-purpose concealer. Lightly dust a translucent powder over the face such as Coty AirSpun Loose Powder. Cheeks are very pink. Apply a hot pink powder blush like NARS Powder Blush in Desire to the apples of cheeks. A little bit of this shade goes a long way.

EYES: Brows are thin and penciled in. For a “waxy” authentic 1930’s brow look, apply a brow pencil and do not blend. I recommend Covergirl Brow Shaper. There is a Midnight Black for Kay’s look. Use Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Duo Eye Shadow in Brown Eyes. Apply the lightest shade, a soft warm ivory, from lash line to brow bone. Take the darker brown shade and blend into the crease. Take a small eyeshadow brush and line the bottom lashes with the darker brown shade used in the crease. Take a sheer gold shadow such as Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Glimmer Eyeshadow in True Gold, and apply to the lid. Apply it sweeping from the side closest to the nose to the center of the lid. This creates a “glowing” look. Apply a brown kohl liner for a smoky look. Try something L’Oreal HIP Kohl Liner in Brown Kohl. Take a fine liner brush and dip it into the powder. Line eyes and smudge with a shadow brush. Apply liner to top and bottom lashes. Keep applying enough to you reach your desired level of “smokiness”. Apply a few coats of a black/brown mascara such as Covergirl Lash Blast Lengthening Mascara to top and bottom lashes.

LIPS: Lips are red and glossy. Apply a sheerer red such as Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Red Saint. Apply a red lip gloss with shimmer. Apply Lipstick Queen Big Bang Theory Illusion Gloss in Energy over lipstick. A sheerer option is to use NARS Lip Gloss/Lip Stain Duo in Moon Fleet/Indian Red Coat with the stain and follow with the gloss.

Since being involved with this 30’s home renovation, I have been obsessed with 30’s everything. If I’m not peeling wallpaper, then I am out at the home salvage places looking for the back of my deco speakeasy. I’ve spent more time paying attention to the 30’s and more than just home trends. This includes 30’s hair and makeup. I must brag that my marcel waves are improving. I absolutely adore this look of bleached blonde turned red head Sybille Schmitz of Vampyr fame. (One of my all time favorite movies and you’ll notice many of my “favorites” in this look).

FACE: Skin is matte and perfect. Apply concealer where needed. A stick concealer usually can do it all and I love the packaging of Paul & Joe Stick Concealer. Apply a powder foundation like MAC Studio Fix, one of my all time favorites. Apply a pinching pink blush to the apples of cheeks with a large fluffy brush or a soft fan brush. NARS Powder Blush in Desire is the perfect color for this look. It is one of my all time favorite blushes for light to medium complexions.

EYES: Fill in brows with a brow pencil. 1930’s brows always had a bit of a waxy look. Apply a stiff pencil like Maybelline Expert Eyes Twin Brow Pencil in a shade darker than your hair if you are going for a genuine 30’s look. Apply a subtle champagne shimmer shadow to the entire lid from lash line to brows. I like Clinique Colour Surge Soft Shimmer Eye Shadow in Champagne. A warm brown shadow should be applied to the crease. L’Oreal Wear Infinite Eye Shadow Single in Brushed Suede is a nice rich, warm brown. Apply to the crease. Apply more of the champagne to closed lids and apply where the pupil would be if your eyes were open. This will add some light. Take the brown shade and apply to the bottom lash line with a smudger brush. This will make the lashes appear thicker. Apply a soft, dark brown kohl liner to top lash line. Don’t wing out and stay close to the lash line. Apply a shade like MAC Eye Kohl in Costa Riche. Whimsy false lashes are a must for this look. There are many out there with a variety of price points. I like the look of Laura Mercier Full Faux Lashes for this look. Apply mascara to top and bottom lashes.

LIPS: Lips are pink and pretty simple. Try a color like Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lipstick in Stay Pink. Apply a tiny dab of Smith’s Rosebud Salve (another favorite) to lips to keep them looking healthy and moist. And that’s it. Well, those finger waves, I’m saving that for another day.

I’m getting in the mood for Halloween here. I love Star Trek for all of their retro babes in ridiculous, cheesy costumes. To get the look of this minor role, major babe:

FACE: Even out blotches or under eye circles with a concealer that can do it all like Covergirl TruConceal Concealer. Apply foundation where and if needed. I suggest a dewy finish foundation such as The Body Shop Moisture Foundation. If you really love a dewy look, I suggest following up with an illuminating powder like Bare Escentuals Illuminating Mineral Veil. I really think this look calls the perfect peachy pink shimmer of NARS Blush in Orgasm.

EYES: Obviously brows are trying to be ridiculous. Even I agree that this look isn’t for everyday wear. I suggest styling brows in a natural arch with a clear brow gel like Revlon Brow Styling Gel. Apply a cream shadow with a peachy glow like Laura Mercier Satinee Creme Eye Color in Peach Organza all over the lid. This provides a nice glow and lots of hold. Next take a smokey gray with lots of shimmer, something like Milani Runway Eyes Eye Shadow in Black Out (dry not wet). Take the color from the top lash line and fill up to crease. Then in a “cat eye” like motion, sweep the corners outward and up. Apply it this way, as dramatic or as tame as you desire. Apply a black eye liner like Almay Intense i-Color Liner in Black Pearl to top lash line. Of course I say to go all out and apply crazy lashes. Especially if this is a party look. If not, apply lots of black mascara to top lashes and less to bottom lashes.

LIPS: Lips are very simple. Apply a pearly pinky peach lipstick like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Silver City Pink. Dab the center of the bottom lip with a peach lip gloss, Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Lip Gloss in Juicy Peach.

And is there a fragrance any better than to complete this look for the bottle alone? Nope, stick with Cartier Panthere EDP.

It’s more 1970’s makeup trends. When I first saw this one I immediately thought of Guy Bourdin. Good, that was what Mr. Nars was going for. This is the 70’s “death under the eyes” look or a bit of the heroin chic. Not my favorite thing and in my opinion one of the ugliest periods of fashion ever. That being said, the collection isn’t too bad but I am not wild about the look. At least for a spring collection, it isn’t too soft.

FACE: There is a Multiple Bronzer in Cape Vert which is a warm dark bronze. It retails for $37. It is nice for contouring. There is a Highlighting/Blush Duo in Hungry Heart. This is a champagne pink with gold shimmer and a golden ivory. It retails for $37. There is a LE Multiple Duo in the best-selling Orgasm and South Beach shades. These retail for $45. I really want this compact. There are Duo Concealers in a few shades and they retail for $30.

EYES: There are two new Duo Eyeshadows. There is Egea which is a light sage shimmer and light icy lilac shimmer. There is Hula Hula which is a pink with gold shimmer and brown with gold shimmer. These retail for $32. There are  Single Eyeshadows. One is Baby Girl which is a baby pink with gold shimmer. There is Grenadines which is a matte reddish burgundy. Not that red and not that great.  There is Night Sun which is a yellow disco gold shimmer. These go for $22.

LIPS: There is a Lipstick in Shrinagar. This is a jammy shimmery raspberry. It retails for $24. There is a Lip Gloss in Sweet Revenge which is a sheer pink shimmer. It retails for $24.

Everybody is raving about how easy red is to wear because of this collection. I disagree. The model looks like crap. Her eyes look tired and a bit druggy. The burgundy is going to be pretty unflattering for most people. I just don’t like the look. I wear red eyeshadow, thank goodness I do not have an allergy to red pigment. I love the look. I pair it with gold and a black liquid liner and get tons of compliments. I wear it with confidence but I don’t go around recommending it for everyone. It isn’t for everyone. The colors in this collection aren’t for everybody. They shouldn’t be worn together in my opinion. I love each of them separately but together, it is too muddy in a healing a bruised trauma-ed face way. Not sexy and not fun.

For some reason this just bothers me. Please don’t package condoms with my cosmetics. It is just wrong. What’s next designer birth control pills or IUDs? It is silly.

NARS has launched two limited edition only at Sephora NARS The Multiple Orgasm gift sets selling for $37. A portion of the sales goes to amfAR A.K.A. The American Foundation for AIDS Research. One set is know as “Safe Sex” and it comes with a Multiple and two condoms with “chicly designed packaging”. OK, stop right there Sephora and NARS. How freaking shallow is that? I only liked my partner to play safe in NARS cosmetics rubbers. Give me a break. If your man knows what company NARS even is then why are you sleeping with him? And don’t get me started on what possible quality a “NARS” condom is like. What garbage! And just because I wear makeup with risque “attention seeking” names doesn’t mean I just sleep around. Not that if you use condoms, you are a slut. I’m not saying that at all. But, I know about safe sex. I am from the safe sex and AIDS generation. And if there is one thing my public school education taught me, it is to not trust rubbers given out by cosmetic companies. This is a line that shall never be crossed. And I can’t get over the reviews on Sephora. All it proves is that women are f’n label whores and actually bought this product for 2 “designer” inspired condoms. Buy a box of condoms you dumb bitches. Are you too embarrassed to go to the drugstore to pick up a box of condoms and only buy them from the mall? Or are you 16 and your small town pharmacist won’t let you purchase any or they will tell your youth minister so it is just easier to buy them at the mall in the “big city”? This product is not liberating. It just talks down to women. It says “play it safe bimbo, here’s two condoms, use these chicly wrapped things wisely but only twice!”

The other is even more insulting and it is Safest Sex which contains the Multiple in Orgasm and a little black book “that lists all the ways to say no to your wannabe lover”. Gag me! This is so lame and once again inappropriate. What about, “I am a woman and I know what to do with my body and I am also not a child or a pushover and I don’t get talked into having sex !” This is something my mom would of given me when I was 13 to try to convince me that it is cool to be celebant. Which would of been appropriate when I was 13 but as an adult it is demeaning. I would love to see the book with all its shallow excuses like “I’ve got to go wash my hair” or “Oops, I didn’t get waxed this week.” Instead of “You’re nasty and drunk and you don’t even know my name” or “We aren’t in a commited relationship”. Thanks NARS, for talking down to all of your customers and assuming that all women are a bunch of brainstems that need a script to talk our feeble minds out of sleeping with disease ridden casanovas at happy hour. Insulting. Plus, it is gross because before announcing who the proceeds go to on Sephora’s website, they say “get hot n’bothered for a great cause” and list amfAR. Sick. Is it the thinking about sex and not be able to wait to use my new generic but somehow designer condoms that gets me all hot n’bothered or is the AIDS research and thought of STD’s that gets me hot n’bothered?

All I have to say is that NARS has went too far this time to get attention and that these sets aren’t about the safeness but just about sex. I feel these products are trying so hard and are too sexual. It is the feminist that wears the slutty see thru cleavage exposing tops and then gets made when everybody stares at her twins and doesn’t listen to all the amazing things she has to say. I don’t feel I am a prude even though I am a married woman in a commited relationship and I have never thrown my body or my emotions around. I’m not offended by individuals and their sex lives. That is such a personal business and should remain so. If you really wanted to help educate individuals on reproductive health and sexual issues than you should give your money directly to the cause, a place like Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood actually helps people.  I never trust a company that gets you to buy things to give away your money in the name of charity to make you feel good because you would rather spend $37 to get a shimmery makeup stick than to give $20 out right to Planned Parenthood. NARS makes enough profit to anonymously donate money to AIDS research and education programs. It’s just lame. Which sucks because I like many of their products but this is hard to overlook.

I’m a mega Wonder Woman fan: from comic books to the hokey TV show. Lynda Carter is one beautiful gal and she totally rocked the Wonder Woman look. It’s a really “fresh” late 70’s look. I’m sure you’re bound to get a little flushed when kicking so much ass. You know fighting for our rights, in your satin tights.

To get this wonderful look, apply a tinted moisturizer. I like Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital Teint Tinted Moisturizer. Dab concealer where necessary, I like Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen for under eye circles. Dust a loose powder over face to keep shine under control. Fighting villains, now don’t look too glossy! I really like Guerlain Les Violettes Matte Touch Powder, yes souly for the scent. Wonder Woman’s brows are killer and stenciled. Fill in brows with a pencil such as Dior Powder Brow Pencil in Black, use a stencil if you must. I love harsh brows… Dust a nude eyeshadow from lashline to brows. Use something like Lancome Color Design Eye Shadow Single in Filigree which is a sheer shimmering warm nude. Now blend something like Lancome Color Design Eye Shadow Single in Ciel du Soir , a matte pebble gray, from lashline to crease. Line eyes with a liquid liner such as Lancome Art Liner in Noir, creating a “cat eye” effect. Apply false lashes and/or tons of black mascara. Dust cheeks with a sheer peachy blush such as NARS Powder Blush in Amour. It adds just enough flush. I love Wonder Woman’s flushed lips. Use the new Lipstick Queen Medieval Lipstick which adds a stained reddish flush to lips. So lovely! As far as scent goes, I have no idea what Wonder Woman would wear, I would think of something femme but fresh and perhaps unisex, something strong and full bodied. I was thinking of something like Guerlain Vol de Nuit. It’s really hard to decide, please comment, would she wear something leathery? Something vetivery? Anyways, at least I have her makeup down.
