burgundyliners

I love burgundy or wine eyeliners for hazel, green, and brown eyes. I have blue eyes and still really love them but I do have to watch out for the undertones in the wine shade or I will look like I have wine-o eyes. When paired with a pale, nude lip, it is a sexy look. Here is a guide to a few burgundy liners ranging in formulas and in prices.

Budget Burgundy Liners (Under $12): Rimmel Special Eyes Precision Eye Liner Pencil in Burgundy is a wooden pencil liner in a burgundy shade. The color is pretty but I found the formula a bit waxy and that I had to use the body heat from my finger tips to soften it. It retails for about $3.50. Sephora Long Lasting Metallic Eyeliner in Aubergine (not pictured) is a long wearing metallic burgundy plum that goes for $10. mark Eyemarker Color On Line in Wine (not pictured) is a retractable and smooth wearing wine/burgundy shade that goes for about $5.50. It is my favorite out of the budget list.

More Expensive Burgundy Liners: L’Oreal Hip Kohl Liner in Burgundy is a deep burgundy shimmer powder. I really like this formula since it reminds me of Guerlain Kohl eye liner but much cheaper and in a wider variety of colors. It retails for about $13 and can be used as a shadow as well. It will create a beautiful merlot smoky eye. Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Eye Liner in Now (not pictured) is a plum burgundy mineral powder liner. It retails for $13. It is a beautiful color and the formula provides a softer, more natural finish. Kat Von D Autograph Eyeliner in Turbo Lover is a liquid liner with a plummy wine base that is warmed by bronze sparkles. This color really works well with blue eyes because the warm undertones make the eyes really pop. It retails for $16. Yves Saint Laurent Dessin du Regard Haute Tenue Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Shimmering Burgundy (not pictured) is a deep burgundy in a soft easy to use pencil. It retails for $28. Laura Mercier Liquid Eye Liner in Bordeaux is a long wearing metallic liner that goes for $22. DuWop Smoke in Plum Wine contains a burgundy cake eyeliner and a deep purple shadow to create a sexy smoky eye. It retails for $28. Make Up For Ever Flash Color in Wine (not pictured) is a highly pigmented cream that can be used a liner. Wine is a red-ish shade so watch if you have too much red in the whites of your eyes. You could end up looking monstrous. It goes for $18. MAC has a few burgundy liners. I like Liquidlast Liner in Powerplum because it is a purpley plum with red shimmer in a liquid form. I love the addition of the shimmer. It goes for $16.50. The other one is the versatile Technakohl Liner in Purple Dash which is a reddish aubergine that goes for $14.50 (both aren’t pictured).

Prescriptives Well Suited fall collection reminds me of Dior’s fall collection last year and a slew of others. The inspiration is menswear and fabric. Once again, masculine chic is in this fall: vests, fedoras, button ups. It’s a bit dandy, Garbo, and 70’s Charlie Girl all in one. I’m not complaining, I love this look for fall fashions. Well Suited collection has those perfect shades for fall and since it is Prescriptives there is a compact/color for all complexions, eye colors, hair colors. The focus for this collection is on the eyes. All limited edition items come in a tweed like packaging. All items are available at Prescriptives.

EYES: There are 3 Eye Compacts that retail for $40. Each compact contains 5 eyeshadows. The Warm compact contains shades of warm beige, warm medium brown, soft olive drab, warm dark brown, and a calm ocean teal. I really think that this compact would be very flattering on blue eyes since the warm shades will provide a nice contrast. The Cool compact contains light pink shimmer, dirty mauve, dusty grey, soft burgundy plum, and a rich eggplant. I think this compact would look amazing on hazel and green eyes. Those cool plum shades will make the green stand out. The Neutral compact contains a light beige, cool light brown, deeper brown shimmer, lead pencil grey, and a matte black. This compact should go with all eye colors. There are 4 shades of the new Long Wearing Kohl Liners. It is like a kohl but with a retractable tip. It retails for $17.50 and comes in Black, Slate, Brown, and Blue. Evidently this liner is supposed to wear nicely on the inner rim of eyes because it is waterproof and smooth. (I never do this, my eyes are too small as is). Lash Envy Mascara has been relaunched for the collection.

LIPS: There are 4 shades (3 LE) of Colorscope Lipcolor for $17.50. There is Posh Honey (creamy latte cream), Posh Ginger (warm copper shimmer), Posh Nude ( a super soft mauve cream), and Posh Pink (creamy light plum berry). Obviously, the lips are sheer/nude for this collection. My favorites are Posh Honey because it is a great lipcolor that goes with a smoky eye and Posh Nude because it is so “everyday”.

FACE: There is a Finishing Powder in Translucent for $28. It is a sheer shimmer pressed powder complexion perfector.

Again, I have fallen for a Guerlain color collection. This is of no surprise for this happens quite frequently. I love the Summer Splash collection, it is so beachy without being overly “tan” and “bronzed”. The packaging is beautiful and glamorous. The company describes this collection as “a mermaid basking under the sun.” I like the sound of that.

EYES: I have found a new favorite. I absolutely love The Loose Powder Kohl in Lagoon Blue. This is a shimmery sea blue with a hint of gold. It is a “warm” blue. It really works with my complexion. If you think you can’t wear blue, I bet you can wear this. I am light with warm undertones with blue eyes, I imagine that this would also work well with medium complexions with brown eyes. It goes for $34 and I think it is worth every penny. I mean just look at the packaging! There is an awesome eyeshadow quad, Ombre Éclat. It comes in a nice rose gold shaded compact with 4 shimmery shadows: white, rose gold, tan, and aqua. Once again, this is a very kind color combo for my complexion. I think natural redheads, dyed redheads could pull this one off too. It goes for $58. I think it is worth it. The formula is so smooth. The Le 2 Guerlain Waterproof Mascara is out at $35. It’s even available in a teal blue! I haven’t tried this. I’m trying to spend less on things like mascara. The single shadows, Ombre Éclat are available in special shades: Pearly White, a white gold shimmer, and Pearly Brown, a nice sandy brown shimmer. These go for $34.

LIPS: There is the Kiss Kiss Stick Gloss in 3 shades. This is a great formula that provides shiney, sheer color in a stick. There is Corail des Mers, a glossy coral, Grenades Des Iles, a brownish/coppery rose, and Rose Des Sables, a warm rose. These go for $30 and are in the pretty summer packaging.

FACE: It isn’t my little pearls of perfection, but it is so nice. I am in love with Illuminating Powder in Poudre des Sables. This is a pressed shimmer powder housed in a mother of pearl like packaging. The print resembles a shell and it is a mix of gold, rose, sable, tan. It is a flattering shade even for paler gals. It goes for $65. The Blush 4 Éclats Sculpting Blush has been relaunched. This is a great formula available in a variety of shades with a nice, soft fragrance. It goes for $48 and provides a nice glow. There is also an Illuminating Pressed Powder relaunch. These are like pressed, super shimmery Météorites. It is lovely with pearly shades of beige and pink. It reminds me of seashells and goes for $65. These are both great complexion enhancers.

Overall, as you can tell, I love this collection. I know I am biased because it really works for my complexion! Hey, we all get lucky sometime, right? This collection is available at most venues that carry Guerlain such as Nordstrom and other department stores in your area.

Lancome’s summer color collections have been the same for years: shimmery shades of bronze for eyes and face paired with shimmer lips. Well, here we go again. Oh, except this time there are more “minerals”.

FACE: I like the Tropiques Minerale Smoothing Pressed Bronzer in Natural Sunkiss. It is a bronzer that works for light to medium skintones. Lancome’s market of bronzers was really missing out there. There is a Tropiques Mineral Loose Bronzer in Natural Ambre. This is a pretty shade but more “orangey”, excuse me “bronze”. Both go for $38.50. There is a Blush Subtil Powder Blush in Botanic Glow, a sheer peachy bronze. This retails for $29.50.

LIPS & NAILS: There are 6 Juicy Tubes Pure. These are the Juicy Tubes that you love but with “minerals”. The shades are pretty sheer and shimmery. A few worth noting are Bare Honey, a super pale gold shimmer, and Rose Water, a barely there pink. These go for $18. There are 4 Colour Fever Sheer Color Lipsticks. All are in sheer, natural tones of pink, , nude, and bronze. These retail for $25 and are a nice “smooth” formula. Le Lipstique Lip Liner in Sheer Nude has been relaunched. It goes for $23. There is a Le Vernis Nail Color in Exotique Kiss, this is a coral-ish pink shimmer. It goes for $18.

EYES: There are 3 Sensational Effects Eyeshadow Quads. There is Coral Paradise with shades of brown, gold, and coral. There is Safari Escapade which is about the same except with a green shade instead of coral. There is Bronze Midnight which has various warm precious metal shades. These come in a pretty and fancy compact and retail for $44. There are 2 Le Crayon Khol Kajal Eyeliner Pencils. This is a soft and easy to use formula. There is Midnight Glimmer which is a deep antique gold shimmer. This is a nice alternative to black. There is Gold Blaze which is a yellow gold shimmer. I like both of these and they retail for $23.50.

Overall the collection is “friendly” because it is netural. Many of the shades will work with any hair color or eye color. I would say that Coral Paradise would really make blue eyes pop and that Safari Escapade would look amazing with brown and hazel eyes. All eyes could benefit from Bronze Midnight (this is a kinder smokier eye for all skintones). I’m not going to rush out and buy any of this stuff. I’m interested in the bronzer but currently I am happy with Maybelline Mineral Wear products and boy are they cheaper.

Just in time with America’s newest obsession with India, thanks Slumdog Millionaire, there is Givenchy’s Maharani Spring 2009 collection. It is inspired by the “sensual and refined beauty of Indian women”. Wow, that isn’t generalizing. Don’t get me wrong. I believe that Indian women deserved to be in the spotlight, Indians do in general. Especially Indian Americans who make up a large population in the U.S. and who are rarely seen in the media. India is a very “exotic” place to most Americans. They mainly think of spicy food and hot Bollywood babes. But, generalizing groups is always a very dangerous practice. Creating looks on a “culture’s ornate clothing and makeup” is a bit generalizing. But, at least it is a bit positive. I mean what country doesn’t want to be known for its beautiful women? I’m sure most want to be known for their great values and minds, but hey this is a makeup/fashion company we are talking about here! We’re selling an image only. Lancome did the India thing this past fall. I liked Lancome’s ad because it had a lovely lady of color. Plus the bronzes and oranges together were lovely. I guess some almost positive press is better than none.

FACE: There are two Sari Glow Iridescent Blushes. There is Maharani Orange which is a golden peach glow and Maharani Pink which is a pink glow. Both retail for $42. There are two Prismissime Eye and Face Compacts. There is one in Maharani Apricots. It is filled with nine bronzy browns, warm tans, and perfect peaches. There is Maharani Pinks filled with nine summer tans, pinks, and taupes. Both retail for $53. I do like both of these because they are multi-functional and the possibilities are endless.

EYES: There is a Magic Kahal Eye Pencil in Black. This is a super dark and thick black pencil. It retails for $21.50. There are two Precious Sari Glittering Eyeshadow. These are gel/cream shadows that pair nicely with bold lips. There is Maharani Silver and Maharani Gold. These retail for $26.

LIPS: There are two Rouge Interdit Satin Lipsticks. There is Maharani Rose which is a deep but bright pink and Maharani Henna which is a deep brick red. These go for $27 and have lovely packaging.

Overall the collection is a “hot” and “spicy” with magentas and corals. It is pretty enough. I like light, sheer metallic eyes with bold lips. That is a look I usually go for in the summer. However, I think the looks could of had a better ad campaign. There is something for both warm and cool skins. Everything is housed in ultra luxury Givenchy packaging. It’s pretty but expensive. And it kills me that the company is idolizing Indian women and I am sure that they don’t even offer a foundation, concealer, or powder in a shade that will suit most Indian ladies.

Weekly Cheap Secret:

I am really impressed with Revlon’s Matte Collection. Matte cosmetics seem to come and go as fads. Many companies do not offer matte products at all. You have to expand out to MAC, Urban Decay, Make Up For Ever, and some actual theatrical brands. Don’t get me wrong, I love shimmer. But I think matte cosmetics really add some depth to shimmery looks. I don’t like a completely matte face, too airbrushed senior picture. But, I do like a deep, matte eggplant used in the crease with a shimmery gold shadow. Or silver glitzy eyes with really matte red lips. Revlon has offered a pretty decent selection of matte cosmetics for a good price. Since these are drugstore cosmetics I haven’t been able to play in all of them. Out of what I have tried, I like.

EYES: The Matte Eyeshadows are very nice and come in a range from super neutral to really bright. This a nice budget friendly alternative to Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadows. There are nine: Vintage Lace (soft off white), Peach Sorbet (pale peachy nude), Pink Innocence (pale pink), Luscious Lime (vivid lime), Venetian Blue (bright electric blue, move on over MAC Electric Eel!), Tempting Teal (deep blue-ish forest green, think Douglas Fir Tree needles, would be amazing mixed with silver or baby blue), Rich Sable (warm deep brown), Riveria Blue (deep midnight sea blue), and Aubergine (dusty, deep eggplant purple, so luxe). I can’t complain about any of the shades. The lighter shades are must have bases for light complexions. The bright colors are so fun. The deep ones will make great smoky eyes or liners. They retail for $4.99 and you get more than what is in a MAC pan. There are 5 Kohl Eyeliners: Pure White (eye opening white), Black Truffle (a deep and mysterious black), Rich Mink (deep chocolate), Midnight Blue (deep navy), and Very Violet (a vivid and electric medium purple). The eyeliners feel nice and soft. They create that “mysterious” eye. They are easy to blend. They go for under $10.

LIPS: The Matte Lipstick is hot. All I really need is a matte nude, matte red, and a matte milky pink. All are offered! There is Nude Attitude which is a really pale nude. It reminds me of MAC Fleshpot or MAC Freckletone. This shade looks amazing with dark eyes. There is Pink Pout which is a white-ish 60’s pink. This looks much like my all time favorite shade, MAC Snob, my wedding day shade. Wear with gray shadow and it is beautiful. There is a lovely every day mauve, Mauve It Over. Pink About It and Strawberry Suede are both bright summer pink. I love both reds. They are classic. There is Really Red which is a bright warm red and In The Red which is a cooler red. I love Really Red, it is almost orange. There is Cocoa Craving and Fabulous Fig both are pretty ho-hum neutrals. There is a beautiful gothic deep wine, Wine Not. I wish I knew about this one this past fall and winter. These go for under $7.

FACE: There are four matte powder blushes. There is a light pink, Rose Rapture. There is a medium hued berry, Blushing Berry. There is a sweet pale peach, Perfectly Peach. And there is the must needed neutral, Barely Buff. These are nice because sometimes you just don’t feel like having glittery cheeks. These go for under $10.

There are many fun colors and everyday colors in this collection. The prices are pretty nice. And since they are drusgstore cosmetics there are always coupons, deals such as BOGO, or on clearance.
