Weekly Cheap Secret:

We all have to wash our hands, so why don’t we make that process a bit more enjoyable. This Palmer’s hand wash is a slightly opalescent liquid that really doesn’t strip the hands of moisture. I like it much better than Bath and Body Works “moisturizing” hand washes. Those just strip my hands dry and I swear make them crack. This product doesn’t. Plus, it has a faint chocolate like odor that lingers on the skin. It’s a nice comforting fragrance that isn’t offensive or competitive. This goes for about $4 and can be purchased on Palmer’s website. I occasionally see at the drugstore. When I do, I usually pick up a couple of bottles.

Things have been so crazy and unpredictable in my life lately. I’ll refrain from ranting but let me just say that it has included a mortgage that has been in the process of closing for over 90 days, having to move out of my current rented residence because I will not sign a year lease since I am purchasing my first home, I have nowhere to live as of tomorrow, and the temps here in Washington have been super hot and unbearable. Anyways, if you want to read more about my so called life please refer to my home blog, www. tudorks.wordpress.com. And it is OK if you don’t. I’ll attempt to post blogs for your beauty fix daily. However, I am without internet for at least a few days, so I am leaving you guys with a few new ones to last throughout the weekend. I have not disappeared or decided to neglect this blog! Have a great weekend and wear berry lip gloss and a dab of decadent chypre perfume for me since I am now packing light and only with cheekstain and a Crazystick. It will all work out, it usually does.

To get Bianca’s look with Kevyn Aucoin products:

FACE: First even out complexion with The Liquid Airbrush Foundation in your shade. Apple concealer where needed, try The Sensual Skin Enhancer. Apply a light dusting of powder like The Gossamer Loose Powder. Apply a powder blush to cheek bones, a deeper rose brown such as The Pure Powder Glow in Neolita. Apply The Sculpting Powder into the hollows of the cheek. Blend and blend.

EYES: Bianca’s brows are thick but well managed and sculpted. Fill in and brush brows into place with The Precision Brow Pencil in your shade. Use The Essential Eyeshadow Palette in #2. Take the peach shade and apply it from lash line to brows. Take the medium brown and blend it into the crease. Take the charcoal black shade and blend it around the lash line both top and bottom. Apply a dab of the ivory shade right under the arch. Curl lashes and apply lots and lots of  black mascara.

LIPS: Lips are glossy with full color. Apply foundation or concealer over the lips to create a blank canvas. Take the Flesh Tone Lip Pencil in Bare, a warm brown, and trace your lip line. Apply The Liquid Lipstick in Ondine, a patent red shade. The foundation/concealer will help this glossy shade stay on longer. Have I mentioned that I love this shade?

I have always imagined Bianca wearing YSL Rive Gauche EDT. I really think with a spritz of this, you’ve completed this disco ready look.

CrazyStick Cologne

I am loving the new Crazylibellule & The Poppies 26 Juin Île d’Yeu solid fragrance (it is now available not only in a cologne but a Crazystick that is equal to 1.7 oz of liquid perfume). It is a must have for summer. It’s the kind of scent I put on and then I can’t stop sniffing myself. I find it very refreshing and very pretty. The new formula is awesome. This product is a winner.

This scent is described as “An exuberant composition fruity aldehyde fragrances, harboring a diaphanous olfactive folly“. It is a fruity aldehyde fragrance that truly embodies summer with it’s productive fruit trees, greenness, and flowering rose bushes. If I had to remember my summer in one scent, this would be it. This is how I want to remember it. Fruiting, productive, lush, green, and romantic. Also, I love this blend because it is truly a modern French aldehyde. It has the class of a classic French aldehyde by Chanel or Rochas but it is truly modern, light, and wearable at any time. I don’t think this is an easy task to pull off but Crazylibellule has done it. This scent has a complexity and for a solid it wears like a spray.

First the fragrance is fruity but not in a typical fruity way. It isn’t like most of the “fruit” fragrances on the market. It doesn’t smell like a lollipop. It is more like fruit, unripe, but ripening on the tree. It is very green and effervescent thanks to the aldehydes. I can smell unripe plums, ripe peaches and oranges, a mix of mouth watering fuzziness and bitter orange peel. I can smell those like they are still on the trees. You get a leafy, green note. It’s a refreshing fruity fragrance, almost champagne like at times. I get the faintness of rose. The rose is not stealing the show and it doesn’t wear like an old-fashioned or heavy rose scent. Enough rose is there to make it romantic and feminine. The rose is accompanied by the faintest of citrus blossoms. The dry down after about 2 hours of wear is soft, slightly fruity but with more woods and musk. But, not heavy, still very appropriate for summer. Like leaves and tree bark and a hint of “skin”.

The formula is awesome. I bought a green tea and jasmine solid perfume in Germany with this base and I loved it and couldn’t find it in the U.S. It is a transparent formula, not waxy at all. It is ultra-smooth and wears for a long time. It is less “balmy” and more “glossy” but not a bit heavy or greasy. I love this new formula which is also paraben and alcohol free. The packaging ,like all the line’s other products, is adorable. Described as “a landscape garden scenery where words and flowers tangle.”The packaging has a bit of sheen unlike the other Crazysticks.

I love this scent. I’ve been getting compliments on it all week. It’s pleasant, light, effervescent. It’s perfect for summer. It reminds me of our backyard which has rose bushes filled with blooms, ripening plum and peach trees, and lots of foliage and bit of sea air. This is how I want to remember summer, plentiful. This is the kind of fragrance that I will take out in mid-winter to remind me of the pleasures of summer. It retails for under $20 and it is available at b-glowing.com.

We all know that sun damage is no good. I’m not going there. If you are even reading this blog, you know that. When I lived in Tennessee and had a 4 hour commute to work daily, I was a huge fan of body lotions and hand creams that contained a SPF. I was getting tons of sun exposure just from driving, not to mention my other daily activities. I still experienced a change of color but never burned. I really hope that using a product with a SPF helped with any future damage as well. Now that I live in Washington, I only see the sun for 3 months out of the year. I no longer have a long commute. I only use these products during the summer here. The rest of the year I have a vitamin D deficiency. Docs here advise not to wear sunscreen during these “rainy” months. In the summer I’ll get my 15 minutes of sun exposure and use these moisturizers. I usually go for the cheaper ones with a SPF of 15 or lower. They do their jobs.

Bargain Body Lotions (under $20): If you want SPF, shimmer, and gradual self-tanner, try Avon Skin So Soft Satin Glow Ultimate Body Moisturizing Lotion SPF 15. It is a “do it all” product that retails for $12. Victoria’s Secret Bare Bronze Sheer Tinted Body Lotion with SPF 15 (not pictured) has a sexy bronze shimmer and warm, nutty scent. It goes for $18. Vaseline Aloe Fresh Protecting Body Lotion with SPF 15 retails for $8. It is light-weight and a bargain. I am a fan of Palmer’s products. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Body Lotion with SPF 15 has a rich cocoa scent and rich moisturizers. It retails for $8. I mainly use Eucerin Everyday Protection Body Lotion with SPF 15. It is light-weight and fragrance free. It goes for $10. I also like Nivea Body Natural Tone Body Lotion with SPF 4 (there is also a hand cream in this line). The fragrance does not interrupt with my fragrances. It goes for $7. Aubrey Organics Unscented Body Lotion with SPF 15 is nice. There is no odor but it does need to be rubbed in a little bit more. It retails for about $13. Alba Botanica Very Emollient Daily Shade Body Lotion with SPF 16 is rich and makes the skin look younger with alpha hydroxy acids. It’s a pretty awesome product and retails for $16.

More Expensive Body Lotions: Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Light-Weight SPF 30 body lotion is very nice for summer. It is light-weight and has a higher sun protection which means that you can stay out in that summer sun longer. It retails for $26.50. Juice Beauty Green Apple SPF 20 Body Moisturizer contains fruit acids to help skin look younger while protecting skin. It retails for $29. MD Skincare Firming Body Lotion with Vitamin C and SPF 8 (not pictured) is a nice fix and protect product that goes for $42. Glytone Body Lotion with SPF 15 exfoliates skin and moisturizes it with shea butter and glycolic acid. (Probably needs a SPF so you don’t get burned). It retails for $44, but it does come in a big bottle. Clarins Bright Plus Breezy Cool Body Lotion with SPF 30 helps skin feel cool/fresh, helps with discolorations and protects. The texture and feel is very nice for summer. It retails for $40. Duwop Revolution Body Moisturizer contains tint, shimmer, and a SPF of 15. This product looks great on legs. It retails for $25 and comes in a few shades.

Hand Cream: Borghese Radiant Lightening Hand Cream contains SPF 30. This product moisturizes, help fight discolorations, and help prevent any further damage. It goes for $15. Shiseido Benefiance Protective Hand Revitalizer with SPF is a rich cream perfect for daily use. It isn’t greasy and it retails for $37. Clarins Age Control Hand Lotion with SPF 15 is very moisturizing. It does have a strong scent and retails for $30. I really like Kiehl’s Unusually Rich But Not Greasy At All Hand Lotion with SPF 10. It is what the name implies and goes for $15.50. Studio Gear Handiwork Protective & Brightening Cream with SPF 25 retails for $22.50. It’s a rich cream that helps lighten discolorations on the hands. There is Erno Lazlo Intensive Hand Cream with SPF 25. I’ve used this one and it goes for $55. It’s lightweight, so I had to apply frequently. Natura Bliss Hand Silk Cream with SPF 15. This product claims to be waterproof which is really nice since we wash our hands throughout the day. It retails for $32. Lippman Collection Rich Girl Hand & Cuticle Cream with SPF 25 hydrates, protects, and brightens without bleaching. It goes for $24.

Just because a product has a higher number doesn’t mean it is better or more efficient. I really don’t think those high number products are necessary for daily wear or at least for my lifestyle. I only get about 30-60 minutes (that’s being very liberal) of direct sun exposure daily 3 months of the year. I burn at over 30 minutes of sun exposure with no SPF. If I am going to be out for a few hours I will use a longer wearing sunscreen product. With the hand creams, I apply those throughout the day due to frequent hand washing.

Oh, geez. Our brains are going to fry here in the Northwest today. We are experiencing temps in the three digits. I have no air conditioning and I have to be out of the rental home this Friday, so I’m moving all my stuff. Ughh, SPF is the least of my worries right now!

Cucumber is a great scent for summer. It is light, fresh, slightly green and fruity with a watery and faint melon like odor. I crave cucumbers in the summer. Everything from little tea sandwiches of cucumber, dill, and cream cheese to my water pitchers of cucumber, lemon, and mint. Cucumbers are refreshing. I’ve put together a “collage” of cucumber scents that I think would be perfect for summer. And as always if you have any more to add, please do.

Budget Scents: This isn’t a “true” cucumber since it is a fresh, fruity floral but it dose have a healthy dose of cucumber: Carol’s Daughter Ocean. It retails for $27 and is nice for summer. This is light-wearing but awesome for summer: Tocca Aqua Amalfi Body Mist. It reminds me of a my favorite summer beverage which is water with cucumber, lemon, and mint. It retails for $30. Now, this product is very light wearing too but it is nice for a mid-day pick-up: Dove Go Fresh Body Mist in Cucumber & Green Tea. It retails for $4.50. It’s a “fresh” scent. I love the “pureness” of Kiehl’s Rollerball Essence Oil. It retails for $25 and has a great lasting power. I really do love everything about it. You can layer it with whatever you want. I think it would wear nicely with white florals or lemon/citrus oils. Demeter Cucumber is a garden fresh cucumber scent that goes for $20. It smells great but also has a light staying power. There is an entire genre of “Cucumber Melon” products from brands like Bath and Body Works, Avon, Body Fantasies. These are usually body sprays that are more on the melon side than cucumber.

More Expensive Scents: You get a lot of cologne splash for $68 with Marc Jacob Cucumber. This is a crisp and refreshing blend. This is a flirty floral cucumber scent: Yosh U4EAHHH!. It retails for $130 and I love its staying power and freshness. It is so pretty. Tocca Cleopatra is more of a citrus scent(grapefruit) but it has cucumber and it makes it refreshing. The EDP spray retails for $68. It’s a nice “heavier” summer kind of cucumber. Like the evening wear of cucumber. Jalaine Cucumber is a long-wearing fragrance that comes in a beautiful bottle. It is a blend of cucumber and Egyptian musk. It’s simple but heavenly and goes for $150. Fresh Index line has Cucumber Bale. It is a perfect summer scent with lots of cucumber, fruit, and blackberry musk. It goes for $75 (not pictured). But, I am not wild about its staying power.

Other “Cool” Products: Yes To Cucumbers Completely Cooling Body Butter is really awesome for summer. It’s moisturizing, cooling, and refreshing. Keep it in the fridge, its’ great for overheated skin. Kiehl’s Deluxe Body Lotion in Cucumber has such a fresh scent and a lightweight moisturizer. Origins Eye Doctor Moisture Care For Skin Around Eyes is cooling, lightly moisturizing, and has a fresh cucumber scent. It is great “beginner” eye cream. Estee Lauder Sparkling Clean Purifying Mud Foam Cleanser has a nice citrus and cucumber aroma. It’s a cleanser for oily skins. I also like Mario Dadescu Cucumber Cleansing Lotion. Once again this is a product recommended for oily skin. Many cucumber scented items are recommended for oily skin. I have normal to dry skin but sometimes in the summer I will reach for the normal to oily products because I get a bit greasy, especially when I lived in the humid Southeast. So it’s a nice match between product and scent.

And since I usually wear cucumber scents during the summer, I keep them stashed in the fridge, especially the all-over splashes and sprays. It is so refreshing and great for when you can’t take the heat.

The Mainstream Monday: Sniffing A Popular Fragrance

Oh, the ever so popular L’Eau D’Issey! This fragrance has a cult following and I smell it on people all the time when I am out and about. It’s good that I don’t find it offensive! It’s a very popular aquatic floral and I remember for a few years there all of my girlfriends wore it. So it has taken me so many years to revisit this scent because I was so tired of it. I brought out a sample of it a few days ago. It’s a pretty scent. I’m not a fan of “aquatic” scents but I can handle this one (on other people) and as far as that genre goes, this is one of the best.

Issey is very, very floral at initial spritz (and throughout wear). It’s filled with humid, aquatic flowers. They are dainty and seem to have the most fragile of petals. These notes are listed as lotus, freesia, cyclamen, rose water, fresh peonies, carnation, and white lilies. If you are afraid of florals then leave this scent alone. It is heavy on them. I would say the floral that stands out most to me is the freesia and cyclamen. I can “feel” the lotus. This floral bouquet seems to create an atmosphere of water garden flowers. You just feel the humidity from them and you can almost see the sweating paper-thin petals. It’s an exotic fragrance (if you don’t live in a hot, wet tropical climate) because it smells like “jungle” flowers to me because they are so fragrant and so wet. The company describes it as “when Flower meets Water”. It wears very floral for a very long time.  Other notes in this fragrance include: precious woods, osmanthus, tuberose, amberseed, and musk. After hours and hours, no kidding, I can pick up a faint trace of the musk and woods, but their companions are still strong florals.

I can’t wear this fragrance. It gives me a headache. It is an attack of aquatic florals that doesn’t ever cease. That being said, for an EDT this wears for a long time. I also think it wears nicely on other people and it doesn’t bother me on them. It is just too much to be on my body. If you love lingering complex floral scents then you’ve found your soul mate with this one. If you want a long-lasting floral than this is it too.

I would say that you would like this if you like aquatic/fresh florals Estee Lauder White Linen (and all of its spin-offs), Demeter Rain, CK Eternity, Davidoff Cool Water, Susanne Lang Lotus Blossom, Armani Acqua di Gio, Lollia Imagine, and/or Avon Haiku. The EDT comes in 3 major sizes: a small .8 oz $44, 1.6 oz $65, and a 3.4 oz $89. Sephora has a roller-ball available for $22 that is nice for giving it a try and travel. *Currently available at fragrancenet.com.
