Weekly Cheap Find:

Maybelline ExpertWear Eye Shadows are OK quality, especially for the price. They are powdery, some more so than others, but they do wear for a long time with a cream shadow or a base worn underneath. The colors in Seashore Frosts is very pretty and very “mermaid”. I think they are very pretty for spring. I don’t wear all four shades together because I think they look a bit mucky when worn that way. The colors are all “cool” but they are made interesting because they aren’t your typical cool colors. There is a crystal sea blue. It wears nicely with the lightest purple shade. It also wears nicely as a wash on the lid with such a shimmery champagne shade as the base. There is a medium purple that was just made for green eyes. It is a beautiful shade. It wears nicely with the light purple, minty greens, golds, and shimmery nudes. There is a light purple. It makes a nice base shade. My favorite color is the medium aqua shade because it has tons of gold shimmers. It looks great for a smoky eye when paired with a shimmery champagne and a deep navy in the crease. It is very pretty and in my opinion worth the $5 for the entire kit. I get the most use out of this shade because I don’t have anything like it. The colors are cool and I recommend this kit for people with green, hazel, and brown eyes. And really any hair color will work from blonde to plummy dyed browns. It’s available at drugstore.com.

I feel I can safely say that pink is the hot color for spring 2009. And if it isn’t pink then it is coral. Prescriptives managed to use both of these hot shades for their spring look thinking about the cool and warm undertones of their customers. Just like the name says, In Bloom, this collection is inspired by pretty blooming flowers. The collection isn’t very “exciting” or original as far as inspiration goes because we all think of flowers when we think of spring. But, they are nice and it is nice to have a little bit of color after months of gloom.

EYES: There are 4 new Eye Color Duos. They come in a pretty pink and coral package. All are inspired by bold blooms. There is Sunflower for the Y/O gals ( I believe the most common undertone). It is a flattering shimmery beige and bronze that will really make blue eyes pop. There is Marigold for R/O. It is a warm, coraly pink duo shimmer. There is Petunia for R. It has a soft pink and reddish, coppery hard to explain shade. And there is Lily for the B/R group. It is a pretty soft pink and lavender shimmer. I think it is what the model above is wearing. I bet it would look awesome on hazel or green eyes. All of the duos retail for $24. Two Perfect Every Line Gel Eyeliner has been relaunched in Cocoa and Eggplant. These retail for $17.50 and are a really nice product. Two Softlining Eye Pencils have been relaunched in Jet (black) and Cocoa. These retail for $17.50.

LIPS: There are 4 new Lipshine glossy lipsticks. There is Zinnia for Y/O. It is a sheer and shiny coral. There is Posy for R/0 and it is a sheer warm hot pink. There is Tulip for R and it is a sheer blue raspberry. There is Tuberose for B/R and it is a sheer and lovely soft rose. These retail for $17.50 and create a perfect and effortless, one step pout.

FACE: There are 2 Cheek Color Duos. They are powders with two shades and they come in the same compact as the eyeshadows but they have a pretty flower imprint. There is one for warm skins with two shimmery shades or coral and one for cool skins with two pretty pink shimmer shades. These retail for $24.

Overall the collection is “fresh” and I do really like the Lipshines because they are so easy to wear. They are very “work” and “weekend” friendly. The eyeshadows blushes are OK but they don’t blow my mind. I do like numerous options becaues right now my hair is dyed red and these pinks aren’t always so friendly. At least I have a coral option.

Maybe it is because I am a closet goth. But, I love the cool toned grapey purple lip look. I love a matte purple with really minimal eye makeup. I love the blue-ish tinted lip whitening sheer violet lip glosses with loud pink eyes. I love a purple hued lip stain with warm, coral eyes. I love it all. But, seriously, this is a difficult shade to wear and a difficult shade to find. It is so frustrating. So that is why I am sharing what I have found with you.

Lipstick: I love a purple lipstick look with minimal eye makeup. That bare even, mascara less look, if the purple is deep enough. I also like it in an 80’s way if the eyes are done a nice, light baby pink with a medium toned purple lip. I have even mixed an almost white purple lipstick for myself to wear with dark, dark eyes. I looked a bit dead but hey, I’ll try anything in the name of fashion. I find that when I find a purple I like, I better buy it because chances are it won’t be around long. Rimmel made an amazing one. It was truly deep and purple but it was amazing because it had lots of silver shimmer. I bought like 10 tubes, which was good because I have never seen it since. It was like I purchased what all the company had. Dior used to have an amazing one too, but it is no more. Even MAC is lacking in this area. However, MAC has two deeper ones that I like. Cyber is a lovely almost black purple but it is very difficult to work with. It is a satin finish which is stupid. It is very difficult to keep uniformed even with foundation on the lips. It wants to gather in certain areas. Your lips have to be flawless and baby bottom soft for it to wear evenly too. But man, once you get it to work it looks amazing. I also like Rebel which is a more on the berry side or purple. It looks nice with that nude eye makeup look. NYX has a pretty good purple selection. They have in their Black Label the shade Seductive which is a medium purple. They have a super shimmery shade in the Diamond Sparkle Lipstick, Sparkling Orchid. This one is a bit to berry pink on me but if you put a black gloss over it, it looks amazing. In their classic formula they have a few nice shades: Orpheus which is a muted grape, Pandora which is a flashy magenta violet, and Iced Lavender which is a super pale and shimmery purple that looks great over other shades. NYX has a great Lipstick Pencil in Vixen which is a deep, dark and gothic purple. Manic Panic has a few goth friendly shades in Black Rose which is a deep, deep purple berry matte and Tramp which is a medium purple matte. Since these are matte, the lips must be very smooth. They have a beautiful pearly purple in Plum Passion. Black Radiance has two nice Perfect Tone Lipsticks in Go Girl Grape which is a grape Kool-Aid and Majesty which is more of a berry kissed plum. Sometimes Sephora brand gets nice pure purple shades. Currently they have Lip Attitue Star in Audaciaous Violet and Plum Vertigo (what is so glam about vertigo anyways?) Victoria’s Secret has an easy to wear pink purple in their Perfect Lipstick in Stiletto. I call it the “work” purple.

Lip Gloss: MAC has a Lipgelee in Moistly which really isn’t much of a purple, but more of a berry. It is very sheer and looks nice with rust eye makeup. NYX has a Sheer Gloss in Lavender Note which is a pale lavender shimmer. It wears nicely over pinks. There are two nice NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Purple Rain a lovely pure purple and Orchid which is another one of those berry, fuchsia hybrids. There is a NYX Sheer Tube Lip Gloss in Lilac which reminds me of MAC’s Moistly. Black Radiance has a nice sheer lipstick in Vogue Vixen but because of my pale skin and the fact that this is sheer it looks a little too pink on me. Stila has a Lip Glaze in Black Cherry this is a bright orchid purple fuchsia shade. Shu Uemura has an amazing Gloss Unlimited Lip Gloss in PR 059 N, it is a deep and shimmery royal purple. It looks amazing alone or layered over those pinkish purple lipsticks to make them more purpley. Shu Uemura also has a super sheer lip gloss glaze in the Gloss Lacquer in Irrational Purple. It is just a hint of purple and looks nice with deep, dark eyes.

Lip Pencil: MAC has an OK Lip Pencil in Magenta which is a vivid pinkish purple. It looks nice colored in the entire lip with a frosty pinkish gloss over it. NYX has the Long Pencil in Deep Purple and the Slim Pencil in Deep Purple and Purple Rain. These are my favorite and the most budget friendly. Manic Panic has two nice lip pencils in Deadly Nightshade which is a deep and dark purple and Ultra Violet which is a vivid purple. Max Factor has a High Definition Lipliner in Purple. I also find that a cheap little eyeliner does the same thing.

Purple lips are hard to find and you ever find one please let me know. I usually find them in cheaper brands (NYX, Wet N Wild), brands made for woman of “color” (Black Radiance, Iman, Fashion Fair) and sometimes super high end French makeup will launch one (Dior, YSL, Guerlain.) It’s weird. I just really want a super dark purple lipstick dipped in tons of gold shimmer. And I can’t find it!

I’m super siked about this limited edition makeup collection. I love the stupid satire of Aussie Dame Edna. I remember watching her interview some of my favorite people like kd lang and Grace Jones. As a kid, I couldn’t wait to grow old and retire and have violet hued hair. Then I found out that Ms. Edna was really a Mr. Edna and even that didn’t bother me. MAC has launched a limited edition collection. The packaging is a violet with red sparkling specs on it. I’m not wild about the packaging because it looks too Red Hat Society and I don’t even know what that is. The names are fun. You’ll get a giggle if you are a Dame Edna fan.

FACE: There are two new High Light Powders. There is Spectacle which is a buttery soft pink and What A Dame! which is a warm peach. Both are lovely and go for $26.

EYES: There are two eye shadow trios. One is Royal Tour which is a blue and purple mix. I like it but I really need to play with it more to see if these actually work together. Climate Blue has been relaunched which is a deep blue. The two new additions are Dame’s Desire and Royal Tour which are two lovely lavenders. The other compact is Wisteria. It’s a smoky blue compact with relaunched Fineshine plus the two new Wisteria and Divine Night. Each retail for $32.50

LIPS & NAILS: There are three new lipsticks and I love all three. There is Kanga Rouge which is a perfect cool red, Coral Polyp which is a lovely coral with a gross name, and Gladiola (my favorite) which is a matte blue-ish pink that looks really nice with cool eye makeup. There are three new lip glosses. There is Splendid which is a pale warm pink, Hot Frost which is a blue-ish frosty pink, and Possum Nose Pink which is a brighter coraly red. All of the lip products go for $14. The nail colors are fun. There is Varicose Violet which is a fun light purple and Asiatique a blue-ish red. These go for $11.

I haven’t decided what I want yet. I now I’m picking up one of the lipsticks and maybe the Royal Tour Eye Shadow Trio. I want to buy my mother the Possum Nose Pink Lip Gloss and the Varicose Violet nail lacquer but I really don’t want to run it over to “the maximum-security twilight home for the bewildered”.

OK, I find butterflies a bit springy, but maybe in the dead of winter I will appreciate Guerlain’s springy choice. I do like the collection, I do love Guerlain. The 2008 color collection features the following:

Meteorites Butterfly Pearls Powder Pearls: These have that lovely Guerlain violet fragrance, are super shimmery and much larger than the traditional Meteorites. They would last forever. the shimmery powders are very flattering and come in beige, pink, white and gold. The container is a metallic pale silvery lilac shade with a butterfly on top. I prefer the traditional packaging more. But, that is just me. These retail for $65.

Sublime Radiant Powder: This is a lovely item with an adorable butterfly adorned atomizer. It is a super shimmery iridescent silvery pink powder with that lovely violet fragrance. The powder can be sprayed onto hair and body for extra holiday glamor. It can be sprayed onto the back of hands and brushed on to face, eyes, etc. The powder is super fine and luxurious. It retails for $82, so it better be luxurious.

Kiss Kiss Lip Gloss: These have a pearly metallic butterfly cap. The formula is the same as always. It is smooth, delicately scented and has lots of shine. The colors are Shimmering Pink which is a bright pink with purple and blue shimmers and Shimmering Violet which is a shimmery light violet. I wanted this one but it was sold out 😦  These retail for $28.

Meteorites Voyage Pressed Powder: This is a very lovely pearly refillable compact. The powder is super shimmery and decorated with butterflies. The shimmer goes all the way down. It is not “gilded”. It has pearly beige, white, pin, and bronze. It is very flattering. It’s a travel friendly version of Meteorites and you have to love that fragrance. Retails for $160.

Guerlain Kiss Kiss Lipstick: Comes in the same beautiful packaging as the rest of the collection. Comes in a lovely pink shade and Sparkling White which is a super shimmery 60’s friendly lipstick with lots of shine. It looks great alone or layered over other matte shades. Retails for $29 and has a heavenly scent.

Mysterious Butterfly Eyeshadow Quad: This comes in a butterfly decorated case and each of the shadows has an embellished butterfly on them. The colors are soft and shimmery: pale gold shimmer, shimmery mauve, shimmery dusty lilac, and a shimmery royal purple. The colors are beautiful and blend wonderfully. Retails for $57.

Overall I like this limited edition holiday collection. It is unlike other items and collections offered for the holidays. The colors are shimmery and photograph well. I’ve seen the packaging in real life and it isn’t cheap. It is very luxurious and feminine. It is a nice treat from the traditional jewel tones and reds and greens. Eyes are purple and smoky, lips are glossy and nude, and the complexion is perfection. This is the only collection offered for the 2008 winter season that I have actually purchased from. True I am a Guerlain addict, but at least these shades are unlike others, plus I love the smell.

Oh, Ann-Margret, you may tease your hair but are you a bad gal? To get this pretty pink lips look apply foundation and concealer where and if needed. Use something like Clinique Almost Powder Makeup and Clinique Quick Corrector in your shade. Brush brows into place with a brow brush and fill in brows with Clinique Brow Keeper in your shade or in Warm Brown to look like Ann-Margret. Apply an eyeshadow base as such; I really like Clinique Touch Base for Eyes in Canvas Light. Apply a nude eyeshadow from lash line to brow bone. Use something like Clinique Colour Surge Soft Shimmer Eye Shadow Single in Buff. Blend a darker shadow such as Clinique Colour Surge Stay Matte Eye Shadow Single in Sable. Blend it from lashline to crease. Lightly line bottom lashline with Sable also. Apply false lashes and/or mascara. Take a large fluffy blush brush and add Clinique Blushing Blush Powder in Cupid which is a soft pink to the apples of the cheeks. Line lips with a pink lip liner such as Clinique Quickliner for Lips in Soft Rose. Coat lips with Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Pink Goddess. If you are a gloss gal, add a little bit of Clinique Long Last Glosswear Lip Gloss in Air Kiss to bottom lip for extra poutiness and shine. Tease hair and use a tone of hairspray. Don’t forget a fragrance. I’m thinking something like CD Miss Dior Cherie, it a sweet but not too nice.

OK, so the look is really 80’s, for some reason Shiseido has really been into that lately. I think it is fun but I know this collection isn’t for everyone. Plus, I lived through the 80’s to idolize this type of makeup worn by my hero, Jem. I lived through it but not like my mother did who cringes everytime she sees purple frosty shadow. Not everyone wants to be a monochrome berry. I understand that. Regardless, Shiseido is a wonderful makeup line that offers a lot of amazing products.

EYES: Eye Shadow Quads are featured in Rose Tones which is what the model is wearing and Wood Tones. These are powder eyeshadows. I haven’t had the best luck with these. I find them a little to “powdery”. Some of the colors are chock full of pigment and the others are lacking. Just because these don’t work for me doesn’t mean they won’t work for everyone. Rose Tones features shimmery nudes, plums and violets. Wood Tones features shimmery browns and golds. These retail for $35.

CHEEKS & LIPS: Accentuating Color Stick – I have wrote about these in a previous post about cream blush sticks. This is one of my favorite cream blush formulas. It dries to a powdery finish, feels lightweight and is so easy to blend. The color that is the star of this collection is Champagne Flush which is a lovely pale pink nude shimmer highlighter. It looks great on the face, eyes and lips. Sells for $32. I love it so much I bought one. The Accentuating Powder Blush is an OK formula in my book. I find it very sheer and great for those a little timid of cheek color. I’m not timid, so I haven’t went nuts for these. The color that is the “showstopper” is Playful Pink which is a medium pink shade.  This goes for $28. They’ve relaunched the Automatic Lip Crayon. I love this stuff. It is well, a crayon, but it never needs sharpened like other lip crayons because it is automatic. It is glossy, smooth and lasts a long time. It can be used as a liner and lip color. You’ll always have a lip color and lip liner that match! The colors are Chic Rose, Red Lady, Pale Violet, Ripe Deep Berry, and Terracotta. My favorites are Red Lady, a true classic red, and Ripe Deep Berry which is a deep, ripe berry just like its name states. These retail for $22. The Lip Gloss shades that are featured are Mellow Gold, a sheer pale gold shimmer,  and Polished Pearl, a pale pearly white shimmer,  to add dimension to the lips. I love Shiseido lip glosses because they are so true to color and wear a long time. This means that they are thick by some people’s standards. These go for $20.50.

FACE: Shiseido has introduced Perfect Smoothing Compact Foundation, personally, I have not tried this because it isn’t designed for my needs. I use Shiseido foundation daily and love their products. This foundation comes in a compact. It provides medium coverage for drier skin types. It has an SPF 15 and micro powders to smooth skin. It feels really great, but was too heavy for me to give a try. It retails for $30 and the case is sold separately.  The case is $9. They have relaunched the Multi-Shade Enhancer Powder. It sells for $25 and the case for $7.50. It provides  a soft shimmery bronze.

Overall, the color collection really smacks the color onto lips and eyes. The colors are very berry. The shimmer adds softness to the lips, cheeks, etc. I like it, I don’t love it. It’s a very “cool” tone collection and not for everyone. I love their Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow which they have left out of this collection. I’ll have to review those soon.
