Mad for Mango: A Mango Fragrance Guide

Who doesn’t love the juicy, tropical smell of mango? I’m not that wild about fruity fragrances but I do like mango blends. They are like a little vacation in a bottle. Mango is sweet, pulpy, and peach-like a.k.a. delicious. Actually, I prefer this aroma in fragrance over a peach any day. Here is a list of fragrances heavy on mango in a variety of price points and mediums.

Budget Mango Scents (under $50): There are a few nice solid perfume mango products out there. I really love Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit Solid Perfume. It is in a nice and natural base. It smells like a tropical fruit explosion of peach, pineapple, grapefruit, and mango. It’s like a tropical cocktail in a solid form. The citrus makes it a “happy” fragrance. The solid is a steal at $9. Carol’s Daughter Mango Melange EDT is a juicy tropical blend of citrus, mango, and vanilla-like coconut. The spray retails for $27. Love + Toast Clementine Crush Roll-On Perfume is a blend of guava, citrus, and mango. It goes for $12 and is in a travel friendly container/roll-on. Benefit Crescent Row Something About Sofia EDT is a sweeter tropical fruity-floral. It has mango, tropical florals, and lots of gourmand sweetness. I think of it as the “cool” weather mango scent. It goes for $36.Benefit B Spot EDT is also a fruity-floral heavy on mango. It’s less sweet than the other mentioned. The 1.7 EDT goes for $38. Demeter Pick-Me-Up Cologne in Mango Pineapple Salsa is a fruity but spicy mango scent. It’s interesting enough. The 1 ounce goes for $20. Villainess Paradise Misplaced Perfume Oil is a creamy coconut tropical mango scent with fresh green tea that adds crispness. A bottle retails for $18.

More Expensive Mango Scents: Strange Invisible Perfumes Tropical Vial EDP is a must have for those that want a juicy, tropical mango fragrance. It’s like a tropical ambrosia. It retails for $135 for 1.7 ounces. Ebba Miss Marisa Tropical Perfume Oil is a creamy coconut mango long-wearing fragrance oil. It retails for $62. Annick Goutal Folavril EDT is a fresh mango fragrance with green leaves and florals. It isn’t so sweet but much more green than the others listed in this guide (my review). The 3.4 ounce goes for $110. Parfums de Nicolaï Turquoise Eau Fraiche is a slightly spicy tropical mango scent with a dash of cardamom and pepper. Even with the spice, it still manages to be refreshing and awesome for summer. The 3.4 ounce retails for $65.

Annick Goutal Petite Cherie EDT Fragrance Review

Annick Goutal Petite Chérie is an adorable and carefree fragrance. It is very obvious that this is a fragrance for younger folks with its fun and sassy notes. And I find it no surprise that Annick Goutal created this fragrance for her daughter, Camille. It is a pretty fragrance and I find it an amazing “starter” fragrance. It’s a cute, joyous fragrance perfect for young girls because it isn’t “sensuous” and is far from “seductive”. However, its fresh and carefree notes appeal to women of all ages. It’s a light-wearing fragrance that wears closely. It’s fruity fresh crispness wears wonderfully in spring and summer. It’s a nice fragrance for fragrance “beginners” of all ages. It’s such a pleasant fragrance. I really do not see anyone finding this fragrance offensive. It isn’t the most exciting fragrance on the market but it is very pleasant, very fresh. It seems to mold to the wearer and just seem so natural.

Mary Cassatt's "L'Été"

At first, all I pick up on is the pear. I love this. The pear has a juicy sweetness that isn’t sticky or nonintoxicating sweet. It just smells fresh and juicy. I love pear used in fragrance, if it is not Jolly Rancher-ish. Pear has a floral quality to it anyways. The top is fruity without smelling synthetic. It has the freshness of a fruit stand. It smells like ripe pears, fuzzy peach, and tart slices of apple. It has a floralness to it. But, it is more of that natural floralness of fruits or fruit blossoms. The dry-down is soft, delicate. It’s a very faint powdery vanilla with dried grass, so it doesn’t come across as too foody.

Notes listed include pear, peach, rose, cut grass, and vanilla.

This fragrance is very light-wearing. It is an EDT. It really seems to be a fragrance that I will want to wear on days that the temps exceed 70. This fragrance doesn’t really project itself so I do see it suitable for work/school environments.

South of France Magnolia Pear Soap Bar Review

Weekly Cheap Secret:

This soap bar is huge! It is so big that it is dangerous. I picked it up at a “health”/natural grocery for like $4. The weather was slightly warming up at the time (in the PNW, this means that it was sunny high-50’s day) and I wanted something fruity-floral. I wanted something different than my usual creamy or spicy shower products. I’ve never heard of the brand before and it isn’t actually made in the south of France. I have since found out that it is sold by hippie grocers and World Market.

The fragrance is a fruity-floral. It is much more pear than it is magnolia. It is a fresh, fruity fragrance that reminds me of sunny summer days. It is a “gritty” pear, it smells ripe. It is made pretty by a very light dose of white florals. The soap bar is gigantic. It was too large to hold safely for like 3 weeks. It eventually broke down into manageable soap slices after about a month of use and being kept out in the shower. (I did not keep this bar in a “safe” place). The bar is 8.8 oz. That is toe breaking big. The soap was long-lasting, especially considering that I kept it out and it was too big to keep in a covered soap dish. I was impressed that it remained evenly fragrant throughout use. Even the last use was highly fragrant. The color of the soap was a pleasing pale Anjou green. It is supposed to be colored with natural pigments. The soap lathered and rinsed nicely without being drying. I just love vegetable oils.

The scent isn”t my favorite scent, but I did like it at that time. I say to give it a try if you like fruity-florals or scents like Marc Jacobs Apple Splash, Harajuku Lovers Music EDT, True Religion EDP, Annick Goutal Petite Cherie EDT, Victoria’s Secret Pear Glace EDT, and/or Pre de Provence Pomme Poire soap. My only complaint and somehow one thing that I like about it, is the size.

Plum Crazy: A Plum Fragrance Guide

I love plums. We have a plum tree in the backyard and this spring brought us the most amazing aroma of plum blossoms. Plus, the tree has been just beautiful when covered with blossoms. It’s been quite a view from my pink boudoir. I also love the aroma of the juicy fruit. Stone fruits really add to a fragrance. A plum has a richness that others do not, plus it lacks the “fuzziness” of peaches. It mixes well with florals and spices. Hey, it even mixes well with seaweed. I would love a fragrance that smells like plum furikake. I’ve compiled a brief “collage” of various plum heavy fragrances. Feel free to add.

Budget Plum Scents (under $50): TokyoMilk Parfum Sugar Plum Solid Perfume is a sweet plum as the name implies. It retails for $18. Bath and Body Works has 2 fruity plum floral EDTs: Cherry Blossom and Blushing  Cherry Blossom. Both retail for $26.50 for over 2 ounces. An “oriental” plum is Avon Imari Seduction EDT. This is a “purple” seductive fragrance with vanilla, plum, and orchids. The 1.7 oz. goes for $22.50. Crazylibellule & The Poppies 26 Juin ile d’Yeu Solid Cologne is a refreshing plum/fruity chypre. The crazystick goes for about $18. To me it smells like a plum tree full of ripe fruit on a hot summer day. I really do love that stick. Aroma M Geisha Pink Roll-On is a frivolous sweet, sugared plum fragrance oil in an adorable package. It retails for $40.

More Expensive Plum Scents: Juicy Couture Couture Couture EDP is a very sweet fruity-floral with plum. It’s a bit too sweet for my taste, but it does have candied plums. The bottle is beautiful. The 1.7 ounce goes for $65. Creed Aqua Florentine is a light-hearted fruity floral with dessert plums, flirty blossoms, and cedar. The smallest spray retails for $130. Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH Quincridone Violet EDP (not pictured) is an energetic plum/fruity violet floral. The 1 oz. EDP spray retails for $65. If a plum based fragrance could be an edgy fashionista, it would be Editions de Parfums Le Parfum de Therese. This is a blend of stone fruits, citrus, cedar, and leather. Love it. The 1.7 ounce retails for $155. If you are looking for a dried plum AKA prune fragrance, more appropriate for fall/winter, give Serge Lutens Bois et Fruits EDP a try. It’s woodsy and powdery sweet. It retails for $200 for 1.7 ounces.

 

Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Spray Perfume Review

Fragrance & Food:

Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange wasn’t what I expected it to be at all. I wanted rugged citrus rind/zest mixed with the sweet juices of a blood orange. I wanted something to pick me up in the dead of winter and to be refreshing in the middle of summer. Nope. Instead with this one, I got too much of  juicy berries. It isn’t a bad fragrance, it just wasn’t what I expected.

First things first, I’m not a huge fan of strawberry scents. I find them too synthetic and too young. I don’t mind sniffing strawberry scents on others but I can’t stand to smell it on myself. Tuscan Blood Orange is all about strawberries at the initial spritz, the name should not of been Tuscan Blood Orange. It should be something about strawberries. Strawberry fragrance lovers should know about this fragrance. It should be in the title. Instead Pacifica is giving berry lovers and detour and attracting citrus lovers whom most likely will be disappointed with this fragrance. At first spritz it is very strawberry-ish. Think of a limited edition Escada scent. It is that berry. In a short time, you get the zest of tangerines and oranges. This drowns the strawberry; however, since my sniffer is sensitive to strawberry, I still pick it up. The zesty orange peel hangs around. It starts to mellow out with another berry, raspberry. This takes a bit of the “edge” off of the citrus while keeping it bitter. Eventually the fuse together and create something that would make a delicious tropical cocktail. The berry begins to fade and you get a juicy citrus. This is beautiful, fruity, and refreshing. At this stage, I get blood orange juice and pineapple juice, making this one tropical frou-frou fragrance. Oh, but then there is the strawberry zombie! After I start enjoying the fragrance it then morphs back into the strawberry citrus blend that was the top. But, this time the citrus is less apparent.

The fragrance isn’t bad. It just isn’t me and it isn’t something that I see myself wearing frequently. I can name 10 other citrus scents on the market that I love more. This is a very fruity fragrance. I would of really liked this one if it had a floral to balance the berry or if the berries were left out altogether. I really love the heart of the fragrance but I can’t forgive the berries. It doesn’t help that they keep coming back from the dead. This is a “young” fragrance to me. That being said, it is a fun fragrance. I don’t hate it. Sometimes I do want a tropical cocktail-ish fragrance. The price is right with this one and it does wear longer than a Demeter PMU Cologne spray. I do think of it as more of a summer fragrance but I do fear that the berries will make it to icky and sticky for hot summer days.

The fragrance isn’t very long wearing. But, I think wears nicely for the price. It wears much longer than a body spray and cologne. I smell traces of it about 3 hours after spraying. It wears about the same as more expensive EDTs at department stores. The bottle is small and you could “refresh” throughout the day. Plus, it has natural ingredients.

Give this a try if you like very fruity fragrances, tropical drink like fragrances, LE Escada fragrances, Urban Rituelle Sweet Treats Pomegranete EDP, Comptoir Sud Pacifique Mora Bella EDP, Fresh Strawberry Flowers EDP, Marc Jacobs Daisy In The Air EDT, Ralph Lauren Ralph Wild EDT, and/or Demeter PMU Cologne Sex on the Beach.

Also, since this is a delicious fragrance and it makes me think of food, here is a Strawberry Compote with Blood Orange Juice. I would add raspberries to give it the full Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange touch.

 

Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH Quinacridone Violet EDP Review

Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH Quinacridone Violet is in the Chroma Series, a collection inspired by artists and paint pigments. Quinacridone Violet is described as “Neon. Shocking. Fantastic”. It is a tart and energetic fragrance; hence, it isn’t very “me”, haha. Neither is the color quinacridone violet, a man-made fuchsia. Not very appropriate for a gloomy, closet goth. It’s a nice fragrance, just not a “me” fragrance. I think of it like a bold Pucci print. I find it pleasing but I am too self-conscious of bold prints and color that I can’t pull it off unless in very small doses such as a scarf.  Quinacridone Violet is a fruity-floral. The top-notes are extremely fruity and alcoholic. It kind of reminds me of a children’s cough syrup a.k.a Triamenic. It’s a citrusy-plum-apple combo. It does smell very “purple”. It is difficult to tear the top notes a part but you just get this juicy, fruity “purple” liquid from it all. It is very “young” to me. This top note mixture has a lot of energy and it reminds me of pulsating fluorescent lights (more raver than closet goth? haha). The fruitiness starts to mingle with florals. You get bitter, exotic florals and a bit of green/fresh violets mixed with an alcoholic fruit juice mixture. It is a very bitter floral mix. Not a flirty, feminine floral mix. It’s tart and fresh. I do like this part of the fragrance. It’s a bitter violet with flirty fresh sweet pea. After about 2.5 hours of wear you are introduced to the dry-down. The dry-down is gorgeous and very “me”. It’s a musky floral with soft florals and skin-like musks. Sometimes when I wear it, it reminds me of delicate flowers in a haze of resinous smoke. It’s a very long-wearing fragrance, like most of DSH’s.

Even though the fragrance is a bit too “outgoing” for myself, I can see how it can work for others. I do appreciate that this fragrance really fits its inspirational color. It’s intense, juicy, and bold. I say to give it a try if you want “plum”. I want a plum fragrance, but I want it to be more of a plum fuikake fragrance, plum with dried seaweed. I still haven’t found one of those. Ohhh, or a delicate plum blossom like those in our back yard.

I say to give this one a try if you like fruity fragrances, Escada limited edition fragrances, Juicy Couture Couture EDP, Sarah Jessica Parker Covet Pure Bloom EDP, Bath and Body Works Sweet Pea or Cherry Blossom EDT, Lacoste Love of Pink EDT, Victoria’s Secret Sexy Little Things EDP, and/or Ralph Lauren Ralph EDT. I seriously think this would make a great replacement (a much more posh replacement) for Sarah Jessica Parker Covet Pure Bloom which is getting harder and harder to find. Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH Nourouz Limited Edition EDP Review

I was so happy to find out that this scent existed. Nowruz is hands down my favorite holiday ever. Who doesn’t love a celebration that includes good food, fresh flowers, the outdoors, clean homes, and new clothes? Who doesn’t love a holiday that celebrates the rebirth of nature? Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH is a nice gourmand but I really don’t think it does actual Nowruz any justice. If I was to do a Nourouz fragrance (and I haven’t) it would be a green and fresh fragrance, a spring fragrance, with new green buds, hyacinth, and dew drops. It would have a top note of rosewater and a dry down that was warm and resiny to symbolize fire.  It would remind one of crisp spring picnics and exchanging laughter with one’s loved ones. But, I didn’t create this fragrance. Nowruz is the time to celebrate getting out of that winter funk. Parfums des Beaux Arts Nourouz is all about the feasting and food end of Nourouz, but not the picnicking/outdoorsy part of Nourouz. Because it has such desserty spices, it reminds me too much of a winter fragrance. (It was released in the fall of 2009). It’s heaviness and sweetness misses the entire “being” of Nowruz in my opinion. It just focuses on desserts and yumminess. Sweets are a part of Nowruz…Anyways, I should get over the whole name, Nourouz, and my personal expectations of what that word means and move on to this indulgent gourmand fragrance.

This fragrance opens up as very foody. It does smell of a spicy, sweet tamarind and pomegranate syrup. It reminds me too much of a sticky, jammy dessert. I feel on me, that the tamarind totally overthrows any floral notes. I get a bit of the rose but it once again, is very foody with the mix of tamarind. This smells like a dessert on me. It smells much more interesting than other dessert fragrances on the market. I just think that tamarind doesn’t wear nicely on me. The middle, about 45+ minutes of wear, is very sweet and smoky. I really love this smoky dry-down. The dry-down makes it a perfect fall/winter fragrance. It’s sweet, resiny, and smoky. It’s indulgent. The dry down is very nice. I pick on the tannins. It’s a bit fruity and really reminds me of the top note of black pomegranate. It’s like the fragrance went full-circle. (Which is very impressive for the entire re-birth thing of Nourouz, see I do like this fragrance). It’s a bit bitter and very sensual. I do love that I can pick up on the tannins and this note should be used more in perfumery. They are subtle and they really “round” out this fragrance. Overall this is a jam like fruity dessert gourmand fragrance. It is the perfect “fruit” fragrance for fall/winter. When I say that it is fruity and gourmand, I am not saying that this is a juvenile fragrance. It is very “grown-up” and mature. And I say that it is a sweet, fruity, gourmand but I really think it could be a unisex fragrance. It’s fruity but more in a dried fruits and wine way. The smoky tobacco notes make it very masculine. Because it is a natural/botanical oil base blend, it wears for a long time. It’s rich and robust. I really do like the scent once I get over my preconceived notions. I think I would of been more accepting of this EDP if it had another name or “inspiration”. I’m just silly like that…and this holiday is very important to me. I do really like this fragrance as a comforting and interesting winter/fall “fruity” fragrance. I really do like this fragrance, really. I find it very interesting. I just don’t like it for a spring celebration. I love it for the cooler months.

A Cheery Cherry Fragrance Guide

I can’t wear cherry fragrances because my husband says that I smell like a urinal cake if I do. Since I spend no time in a men’s restroom, I can’t contest. I just have to take his word for it. Fortunately, you don’t just have to smell like a cherry jolly rancher when it comes to cherry. There are many cherry blends and cherry blossom fragrances on the market. I’ve made a list of cherry fruit and cherry blossom fragrances in many price points.

Bargain Cherry Scents (under $40): The Body Shop Japanese Cherry Blossom EDT is a green, fresh floral bouquet. The 1.7 oz spray retails for $25. Avon Fire Me Up EDT is a fruity blend of black cherry, citrus, and pomegranate. The 1.7 oz retails for $16. Melissa Flagg Sadie’s Perfume Roll-On is a romantic blend of cherry and plum blossoms floating on white tea. I think this is my favorite cherry blossom scent. The roll-on goes for $28. Bath and Body Works has a few cherry blossom scents but I’d say their most popular is Cherry Blossom EDT. It is a blend of juicy fruits and delicate flowers with cherry blossom. The 2.5 oz goes for $26.50. Demeter PMU in Cherry Blossom is a light-wearing cherry blossom scent. The 1 oz cologne goes for $20.

More Expensive Cherry Scents: L’Occitane Cherry Blossom EDT is a light, springy floral fragrance. It’s light, airy, and soft. The 3.4 oz retails for about $46. Cartier Délices de Cartier is a sweet, gourmand like fragrance. The top not is Morello cherry. It is then followed by jasmine, vanilla, and tonka bean. The 1.6 oz EDP goes for $100. Annick Goutal Quel Amour EDT is a bubbley, fruity, rose floral with Morello cherry. The 3.4 oz goes for $115. Ed Hardy Love & Luck is a sweet fruity fragrance with cherry blossom, sake, plum, and blood orange. The 1.7 oz goes for $55. Victoria’s Secret Sexy Little Things Ooh La La EDP is a fruity floral with citrus, cherry blossom, and sweet vanilla. I think the 3.4 oz goes for $49. Hilde Soliani Doolciiisssimo is an interesting guilty pleasure of mine. It is a blend of cherry tobacco, which I have always thought smelled great, with vanilla and patchouli. The 3.4 EDP goes for $175.

 

Pacifica Mediterranean Fig Solid Perfume Review

I love a fig fragrance. They are what I “collect”. Sometimes I find myself purchasing less-than-perfect-figs just because I can’t help it. And I love a fig fragrance that actually smells wonderful and retails for under $10. (This product retails for $9). So, what I am saying is that I love Pacifica Mediterranean Fig Solid Perfume. It is a must have for the fig lover. And even a must have for those wanting a simple scent. I see why this is one of Pacifica’s #1 sellers.

The tin is adorable. I love the almost Marimekko inspired fig graphic design. The tin is nice for travel and is about the size of a lip gloss tin. The texture is a bit waxy but “sticks” just fine when mixed with the warmth of your fingers rubbing it in. It is moisturizing with coconut and soy wax. I love the intimacy of a solid perfume. They wear closely and you wear them, not the other way around. It doesn’t wear very long because of its medium, but that is why it is travel friendly. It wears on me for about 3 hours and I actually enjoy applying it again. It’s a nice fig pick-me-up. And isn’t that big of a deal to re-apply. I re-apply lipsticks like 30 times a day.

The fragrance is fig, not so fruity, but much more woodsy and green. My all time favorite fig scent is Diptyque Philosykos. Pacifica is no Diptyque but look in the difference of price! Diptyque is a great fig fragrance in a solid fragrance medium and I have layered it under the Diptyque EDT for “lasting power”. Like I said, it isn’t fruity fig or fruity fig sap like some fig blends. It isn’t blended with sugar or vanilla for a fig dessert like scent. This is more of a “Mediterranean” scent. It is warm, simple, and cozy. It smells of smooth fig tree leaves, “greeness” from neighboring plants, and a woodsy base of dry sandalwood. Since this is a solid, I feel it is what you smell is what you get. There isn’t a transformation. This is a well-rounded green fig scent mixed with sundried driftwood. It’s effortless to wear. It’s a great reminder of late summer seaside strolls. This is a great unisex solid perfume. I say to give it a try if you are a fan of fig scents or if you like Antica Farmacista Green Fig EDP, Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Amalfi Fig EDT, Diptyque Philosykos EDT or solid, TokyoMilk Marine Sel Perfume Solid, Heeley Figuier EDP, L’Artisan Parfumeur Premier Figuier EDT, Marc Jacobs for Him, and/or Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue for Her EDT.

Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH d’Anjou EDP Review

Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH d’Anjou is a great “work” or “my first fragrance” type of perfume. I typically prefer something heavier (thank goodness I don’t work in a fragrance free zone) but I can appreciate the softness and wearability of this fragrance. For a fruity-floral, this is one of my favorites. For a pear, d’Anjou is one of my least favorites… This is one that is fresh, fruity, slightly floral. It is flirty without being hissy or overwhelming. It is light and breezy. The perfume house describes it as “sheer as a veil, ethereal as a cloud, d´Anjou is Spring…the delicate scent of green pears, leaves, and early flowers.” This is a lovely description that really fits this “simple” fragrance.

At first it is very “pear”. It isn’t cheap or coy like Victoria’s Secret Secret Garden Pear Glace type of pear. Like I said, this one is flirty but not skanky. It’s a nice smile, not too “touchy”. This is a scent that takes you to lush green grove on a soft blanket on a picnic. You bite into the best tasting pear of the season. The weather is perfect, still warm enough for bare arms and sandals. You are enjoying the simple things: orchard fresh fruit, warm sunny afternoon, great company, and lots of laughs. You then lounge in the sun, absorbing it’s warmth. It warms your favorite white cotton tee and perfect jeans. Your toes feel the breeze. It’s a good day. It’s simple, casual, nothing over the top but it is so special. So back to the top note…it is juicy and you can almost smell that pear texture. You can feel the stickiness of the juice. It’s a beautiful, simple, pure pear. It is then accompanied by soft, delicate petals. It is so soft and not overwhelming and too floral. I pick up on the lily of the valley. Like I said, this is light. I wouldn’t say that this is a lily of the valley heavy scent. It really just smells so sweet and dainty. The floral notes complete the “entire pear” experience from juice to skin.  It seriously smells like ripe pear juice on clean, fresh, warm skin. That would be my summary.

I really do like this scent because it really does describe the beauty of a pear. It is a fresh, light scent. I also find it innocent enough to be a “first” fragrance. It sure beats many of the awful celebrity scents out there. I know that this scent is supposed to remind one of the freshness and beauty of spring. This scent really is seasonless and quite effortless to wear. However for me, I see it as more of a late summer/early fall scent since this is when pears become to ripen here.

This fragrance is a soft, close the skin type of fragrance that wears for about 5-6 hours. I must emphasize very closely to the skin. This is a soft fragrance from start to finish. I would say that you would like this if you are a fan of light, fresh scents, Kiehl’s Essential Oil Rollerball in Pear, Yosh U4eahh!, Rosie Jane Leila Lou, Annick Goutal Petite Cherie, and/or Tocca Florence. This is also a great scent for the person who doesn’t think that they like fruity fragrances. This is one sophisticated fruity fragrance. Notes include: green pear, petitgrain, Bulgarian rose, cyclamen, lily of the valley, and musk. An one ounce EDP spray goes for $60. This size and other sizes are available on the company’s website.
