I feel that this color is such a huge seller because it is so dark in the tube. Women want to feel daring and bold. They want to feel like they would actually wear a dark lipstick even though they most likely wouldn’t. Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey is that middle of the road shade. It looks dark and daring but it is really pretty sheer and can be worn anywhere. It comes in a slender and sleek tube. The formula is not a lipstick and not a gloss. Well, so it claims. In my eyes it is a sheer and somewhat sticky and not as long wearing lipstick or a non-sticky and  long-wearing lip gloss! The color is a beautiful deep wine “stain”. It looks fresh and it is truly seasonless. It really adjusts to most skintones. It can look a bit more berry than wine. It plays with your skin’s undertones. It has worked with every color that I have ever dyed my hair. It retails $14. I am never without a tube. I love the way it feels and I love the flawless, everyday shade.

I have a thing for dark lipstick. It is a bit tricky and intimidating but that is why I love it. It’s dramatic. I would like to say that I wear it during the cooler months but to be honest, I like to be taboo and sport it in the warmer months as well. I love a deep, dark, berry stained pout. I love to feel vampy like Theda Bara’s image. I like to feel a bit “runway”. And frankly, I am a closet goth. This is my way of saying I’m OK with the cruel, cruel world.

Dark lipsticks and lip colors are so tricky because of skintone. However, I think that anybody can get away with it if you possess enough attitude. I don’t care if you are dark with gold undertones or ghostly pale with a visible vein road map. It works. It just takes some playing around and lots of confidence. Dark lips create a “harsh” look and you must be able to deal. It does show more imperfections. Lips must be smooth and healthy. Dark lipsticks will cling to dry spots resulting in an unattractive splotchy look. So keep lips moisturized. It is good for them anyways. I’m not going to create any other rules with the rest of the makeup when you wear darks. I like it with a perfectly matte face, sheer nude eyes with or without mascara. I like it with kohl rimmed eyes like Miss Bara’s. I like it with dewey cheeks or matte cheeks. It just doesn’t matter. Just make sure lips are moisturized.

For the Ballsy: I’m talking deep, dark, and dramatic. These colors are rarely for the meek. These are the colors for maximum drama. I’m talking you would wear black lipstick. None of this YSL glamour black gloss. I’m talking something like NYX Lipstick in Penelope, a rich angsty shock your Christian mother black. It retails for $3.50 so that you will even have enough money left to purchase black nail polish and a pentagram necklace 🙂 from Hot Topic. Lips need to be smooth. Coat this stuff on, a lip primer does help from keeping this stuff smooth. NYX also has a wonderful deep burgundy called Almost Black. It has a bit more depth than the straight up black stuff. I also like Egg Plant for a dark purple look. All retail for $3.50. MAC has a nice Lipstick in Cyber which is a black purple with a satin finish. It is a bit hard to work with because it has too much “slip”. It retails for $14. Make Up For Ever has a lovely glimmery navy lipstick in Pearly Blue Black and it retails for $19. I also like their Blueberry which is a deep berry. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry is a deep blood wine lipstick with a bit of sheen. It retails for $7.99.

For the Closet Goth: For a deep lip with a bit of color, try YSL Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Lipstick in Forbidden Burgundy, a rich deep berry. Plus, the packaging will make you feel like a queen. As it should with its $34 price tag. One of my favorites is MAC Viva Glam III which is a matte deep plum. It is dark but it looks “classic” and not a bit like a purple crushed velvet cape. It retails for $14. Another one that is nice is the new Revlon Matte Collection Lipstick in Wine Not. It is a deep, classic matte wine that retails for $7.99. Max Factor Lipfinity 3D Maxwear Lipcolor in Violet Vamp is a nice medium wine with a purple shimmer topcoat that retails for $8.99 (no longer available in the US). Lipstick Queen Wine Sinner Lipstick is one of my favorite blackberry wine shades. It retails for $18. Also I love Chanel Creme Lipstick in Vamp which retails for $28.

For the Wusses: Go for something dark but really sheer. It makes you feel edgy without getting strange stares from your co-workers. I like Urban Decay Apocalypse which is a sheer blackberry in killer packaging. It has a soft vanilla fragrance and retails for $22. One of the best for this category is Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. It’s so popular for its edge but wearable factor. It feels great on the lips and retails for $14. Black Radiance has a sheer deep-red  brown Radiant Lip Gloss in Mocha Madness. It retails for $2.99 and looks great over other colors to “deepen” them. A lip stain is always a way to get color without harshness. Try something like Urban Decay Lip Envy in Greedy which retails for $17. Lipstick Queen Big Bang Theory Lip Gloss in Black Hole is a lovely deep wine shimmer. It is buildable for more or less drama. It retails for $20. Or for the daring, wouldn’t you love to bust out a black lipstick during a board meeting or something? Try Lipstick Queen Black Tie Optional Lipstick for $18. It is super sheer, and yes black. It just adds a tiny bit of darkness.

Got to love dark lips...

OK, so I am cheating. This pic has been photo rouged but I love the look anyways. You can’t go wrong with a deep matte lip. It just proclaims Old Hollywood glamor. To get this look apply foundation and concealer if and where needed. This look is all about matte skin, so try something like L’Oreal Quick Stick Instant Foundation and Lola Cosmetics Creme Concealer. Lightly dust face with a large brush with CornSilk Shineless Natural Matte Powder. Pencil in brows or make them appear fuller with a brow pencil such as Benefit Cosmetics Instant Brow Pencil. I’m going to recommend MAC Eye Shadow for the eyes. Brush Bamboo, a nude matte beige, from lashline to brow. Next you’ll be creating a chocolatey smoky eye using Handwritten which is a dark matte brown. Brush it from lashline to just above the crease. Blend in an half circle motion for a halo effect. The shape is round, not almond. Lightly brush this shade under the bottom lashline too. Line eyes with MAC Eye Pencil in Coffee, a rich brown. This is to create thickness near the lashline. Apply false eyelashes or tons of mascara such as MAC Zoomlash in Zoomblack. Coat bottom lashes too. Lightly dust cheeks with a powder blush such as L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Blush in Soft Sun. Line lips in MAC Lip Pencil in Burgundy. Apply a rich matte lipstick such as Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Wine Sinner. That’s the look and you are ready to go. Apply a rich fragrance such as Guerlain L’Heure Bleue which I really need to buy some more of.

I really need to let everyone know how freak’n stoked I am about Yves Saint Laurent Lip Gloss Pur in #49 Black. I must have this. It is my last makeup frontier. This sends shivers down my spine. First things first, I am a total closet goth. This means that I love gothic styles: deep lipstick, purple hair, Edwardian collars. However, this shocks most people because I seem like a pretty nice, normal gal. Little do they know that I would love to wear black lip gloss. Take that back, I think they know. Thank you YSL for making this one more step closer to kosher. I love the shine, it keeps it from being too 6th grade boy shopping at Hot Topic. It is very chic. I love chic goth looks, forget the purple crushed velvet Ren Fair bustier dress. I want a pencil skirt, granny boots, black lace top with a pussy bow, and a damn black bowler hat. Anyways, I can’t stop thinking about this dumb gloss. Sure black gloss has been around for ages, but this is glamor. This is my type of goth. This is freak’n YSL. I think about this on the lips, deeply and as a dark as it can go with super metallic gold eyes. I think of it layered over a berry shade creating a juicy blackberry. I think of this worn alone on a nude face sans blush or any eye makeup. I think of it with smoky eyes worn slightly light and smoky on the lips. I think about all of the possibilities. I feel I have been living in a makeup rut. I have seen it all, been there done that. Nothing is “extreme” enough anymore, nothing surprises me. This does. This makes me think, I can’t wear this to work, what would my in-laws think, what would random people think. I love it. Because even though I am totally obsessed with this stuff, it still makes me shy. I think, “oh, only weekends out and about Seattle.” I love feeling that way. I’m not scared of body glitter, crimson lips, teal eyeshadow applied in a Liz Taylor Cleopatra type fashion. I’m not scared of cutting my own bangs crooked. But, I am a little scared of the social implications of black lip gloss. It is wonderful. It makes me feel like a rebellious teenager again. Yes, I want attention. I want to be edgy. Except I know I can get away with this. Nobody will say anything. It is wonderful and I must throw down the $28 to have it. If I can find it….

Siouxsie will have nothing on me. My lips will be dark and glossy...

Siouxsie will have nothing on me. My lips will be dark and glossy...

I love dark lips which led me to my good friend MAC Viva Glam III Lipstick. This shade is a matte and mute brownish plum. It is chock full of pigment and offers full coverage with a lovely matte finish. I admit that sometimes it is tricky. If you must wear lip balm under this color make sure it is applied evenly or this lipstick will apply very splotchy and make you look kind of like a pit bull. This color was launched in 2000 and I still love it. It comes in the Viva Glam red and black bullet case and has a soft vanilla fragrance. It is my go to for fall or when I dye my hair a burgundy shade. I’m not the only one craving dark lips for fall. All the makeup companies are pushing it such as Sephora, MAC, Smashbox, etc. and it is in all the beauty magazines.

I’ve taken a picture of my lipstick. The flash washed it out a bit but not too much. Just imagine the shade without the sheen of the flash and that is it.

I’ve also taken a picture of myself wearing this lipstick which came out looking like a goth girl MySpace photo. I now know why everyone’s social networking pictures are so lame and serious looking. I thought they were trying to look sexy like they were in an Euro Vogue or something but you’re so serious because you are concentrating on taking a picture of yourself. It’s hard and my arms are up in the air snapping a photo it makes my face look stupid. Anyways, please ignore this. I just wanted to give an example of the look I love. It isn’t perfect and my hair isn’t even brushed…

So, I love dark lips with minimal eye makeup. It takes no more than 5 to 10 minutes to complete. I am going to tell you what products I used for this Iook. First, I applied Lancome Aqua Fusion TeintĂ© Tinted Moisturizer in Shade 1. I applied Lancome Maquicomplet Complete Coverage Concealer in Light Buff which I mix with a little of Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch. I love the slip that this provides. I covered a few spots with Maybelline Pure Concealer in Light. ( I love this product!) And I brushed my face with a huge kabuki brush covered with Lancome Dual Finish Powder Makeup in Matte Ecru. I brushed my brows with Lancome Modèle Sourcils in Châtaigne. I applied Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow in ABC Gum which is a light peach all over the lid. I brushed and blended Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow in Secret Service which is a matte warm brown. I coated lashes with Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume Blasting Mascara in Very Black. (This isn’t horrible mascara, I just don’t know if I’ll purchase again unless I get another awesome coupon that makes it almost free .) I took a large fluffy blush brush and applied Cover Girl Cheekers Blush in Golden Pink. I love Cover Girl Blush and the price is right. I don’t know if this is the best shade for me (others one make me look more alive), I feel it doesn’t photograph well but of course nothing does with a harsh flash on a digi camera. And nothing makes one look much paler than the flash of a digi cam. Finally, I applied Almay Ideal Lipliner in Wine and coated my lips with MAC Viva Glam III Lipstick. Finished in 7 minutes while my ginger tea was still brewing.

Here are some tips for the lips. If you worry about splotchiness with such a pigment packed matte, apply a lip base or concealer or foundation onto the lips to create a smooth canvas. I do this sometimes but then I find it may or may not mess with the vibrancy of the color. I always line my lips when using an intense shade. I like it harsh so I use a darker lip liner. Any liner will work, a nude is perfect for everything. Finally, A Q-Tip is your best friend. If you paint outside of the lines just go around with a Q-Tip to get the perfect pout. Blot if you must.

It’s that simple and you’ll always looked made up and fab.

What have the Factors put together for us this fall? Well, it looks like smoke’n hot deep “sinful” colors and demure pale shades that juxtapose one another perfectly.  You know something that is both wicked and lovely. It’s a deep lip or smoky eye or heck, even both. The website describes it as being, “Every woman is naughty and nice, daring and demure, light-hearted and darkly alluring. For looks that are charmingly sweet, devilishly sexy, or a little bit of both, experience our Wicked Lovely Collection.” So it’s the split personality collection.  I believe that most women will but the charmingly sweet and not the darkly alluring shades but those devilishy sexy shades are the ones worth noting. The collection contains the following:

EYES: WL Cream Liner and Loose Shadow set: It contains three shimmery cream eyeliners in a pewter, antique bronze and cool, dirty taupe. The shimmer powder is a smoky pebble shade. This is a nice portable mirrored compact to create a smokey eye. It retails for $32. There are WL Eyeshadow Duo in Sexy/Demure which is a shimmery peach and shimmery deep bronzey brown that is perfect for everyday. The other is Sinful/Demure which is a pale shimmery ivory and a shimmery charcoal slate which is perfect for a smoky look. Retails for $24. They’ve relaunched the Bionic Mascara which I haven’t tried so I can’t comment on.

LIPS and CHEEKS: WL Lip Gloss in three shades. These come in an hour glass-ish package with a black tassel. I wasn’t really impressed with the packaging. It is too stripperish and is like the lip gloss equivalent of a pastie. The shades are Coy which is a sheer au naturale nude, Sweet which is a sheer warm apricot/peach, and Sultry which is a deep shimmery black cherry wine. I really like Sultry because as I have commented before I am craving those dark wine lips for fall. Each have a brush tip applicator and retail for $18. There’s the WL Lip Pencil in Tempt which is the arranged spouse for Sultry. Tempt is a deep dark cherry that retails for $16. There’s the WL Doubletake Lip Color Pencil in Gossamer which is a very pretty shade. One end is a lip liner that is a natural pinky peach and the other is a creamy lip color that is a pinky peach. It retails for $22 and looks awesome with dark eye makeup. Finally, there is the WL Blush Rush in Charm which is a beautiful natural warm light, soft pink powder blush. It adds needed softness to a strong eye or lip. It comes in a really cool compact that has a swivel mirror on the bottom. It retails for $24.

Overall, I like the collection. It has something for everyone from dark merlot lips to nude eyes or dark smoky glam eyes to peachy pink innocent lips. This color collection seems to be available everywhere: Nordstrom, Ulta, Sephora and if you can’t find it at a retailer there is the Smashbox website.
