Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH Quinacridone Violet is in the Chroma Series, a collection inspired by artists and paint pigments. Quinacridone Violet is described as “Neon. Shocking. Fantastic”. It is a tart and energetic fragrance; hence, it isn’t very “me”, haha. Neither is the color quinacridone violet, a man-made fuchsia. Not very appropriate for a gloomy, closet goth. It’s a nice fragrance, just not a “me” fragrance. I think of it like a bold Pucci print. I find it pleasing but I am too self-conscious of bold prints and color that I can’t pull it off unless in very small doses such as a scarf.  Quinacridone Violet is a fruity-floral. The top-notes are extremely fruity and alcoholic. It kind of reminds me of a children’s cough syrup a.k.a Triamenic. It’s a citrusy-plum-apple combo. It does smell very “purple”. It is difficult to tear the top notes a part but you just get this juicy, fruity “purple” liquid from it all. It is very “young” to me. This top note mixture has a lot of energy and it reminds me of pulsating fluorescent lights (more raver than closet goth? haha). The fruitiness starts to mingle with florals. You get bitter, exotic florals and a bit of green/fresh violets mixed with an alcoholic fruit juice mixture. It is a very bitter floral mix. Not a flirty, feminine floral mix. It’s tart and fresh. I do like this part of the fragrance. It’s a bitter violet with flirty fresh sweet pea. After about 2.5 hours of wear you are introduced to the dry-down. The dry-down is gorgeous and very “me”. It’s a musky floral with soft florals and skin-like musks. Sometimes when I wear it, it reminds me of delicate flowers in a haze of resinous smoke. It’s a very long-wearing fragrance, like most of DSH’s.

Even though the fragrance is a bit too “outgoing” for myself, I can see how it can work for others. I do appreciate that this fragrance really fits its inspirational color. It’s intense, juicy, and bold. I say to give it a try if you want “plum”. I want a plum fragrance, but I want it to be more of a plum fuikake fragrance, plum with dried seaweed. I still haven’t found one of those. Ohhh, or a delicate plum blossom like those in our back yard.

Notes listed include: cherry blossom, lime peel, plum, quince, aglaia flower, Italian neroli, osmanthus, sweet pea, violet, violet leaf, atlas cedarwood, cassis bud, incense notes, and musk.

I say to give this one a try if you like fruity fragrances, Escada limited edition fragrances, Juicy Couture Couture EDP, Sarah Jessica Parker Covet Pure Bloom EDP, Bath and Body Works Sweet Pea or Cherry Blossom EDT, Lacoste Love of Pink EDT, Victoria’s Secret Sexy Little Things EDP, and/or Ralph Lauren Ralph EDT. I seriously think this would make a great replacement (a much more posh replacement) for Sarah Jessica Parker Covet Pure Bloom which is getting harder and harder to find. Parfums des Beaux Arts by DSH The Color Orange is a fragrance based on the color orange used in Rothko’s no.12. Appropriately it is heavy on citrus. Oranges are orange. At first spritz it is a juicy but rugged citrus. It smells like fresh, hand squeezed oranges. It’s a mix of the juice and the peel. It’s a bounty of mid-winter ripe citrus: juicy blood oranges, mandarins, and grapefruit. These are listed as the top notes and you can really smell them. Citrus crops are one of the few things that I enjoy about winter. Who doesn’t love the feel of a blood orange awakening the senses in the dead of winter? I can smell the lushness of blood oranges, the tartness of little mandarins, and the rugged sweetness of grapefruit. It is like an olfactory vitamin C bomb. It’s bold and refreshing, tart and only sweet in the way that a pink grapefruit or blood orange can be. Surprisingly, The Color Orange becomes “lighter” and flirtier. It has a whimsy blend of neroli/orange blossom. It’s still “citrus” but with a breeze of neroli/orange blossom. It becomes much more feminine, smooth, and less rugged. It’s just flirty, coy. It blends smooth like the oil paints used in a Rothko painting, seamless but with definition. I love the base. This flirty, coy citrus-floral turns in to a moody, Medieval animalic citrus pomander. The dry-down is spicy and rich with wintery myrrh, ambrette seed, and sensual musks. This isn’t a Christmas time craft project type pomander, heavy on cinnamon, stuffing an orange peel with cloves. This is how I imagine a Middle Ages pomander, animalic heavy on ambergris, rich resins, and orange rinds, all carried from distant, warm lands. Something to outweigh the less than perfect wintery weather of the land where you reside. This is a reminder of warmth, sunshine, and bountiful groves. Not the rain, cold, frost, snow, grayness of December.

I really like this fragrance for winter. It is refreshing, warm, and very much like the citrus in season. I would say that you would like this if you like “rugged” citrus, something “orange”, winter citrus blends, Diptyque L’eau de Tarocco, Keiko Mecheri Sanguine, Red Flower Organic Ambrette, Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange, and/or Fresh Bergamot Citrus. Oh, or Bliss Blood Orange & White Pepper body cream. The fragrance wears for about 4 hours.

Les Garçonnes Tamara Charleston is inspired by Tamara de Lempicka and her amazing paintings. I am so delighted that the dazzling Tamara was the inspiration for this fragrance. The packaging of this one contains the dramatic (and one of my favorite) color combos of chartreuse and aubergine. When I first heard of this collection of Crazysticks, I was very intrigued by this one in particular. It sounded so interesting with notes of gardenia, sambac jasmine, green mandarin, peach, lisylang, freshly cut hay, amber, and absinthe. It is described as a “fresh and flowery cocktail, almost prohibited“. I am pleased with this solid perfume even though it isn’t exactly what I expected. I guess I expected for it to be kind of herbaceous like dried hay with a heavy anise or licorice note. I expected it to be more bitter. I guess I thought it would be heavy on “absinthe”. I would like my “in my mind version” since I love anything licorice, but I could see it turning many people off. Tamara Charleston is much prettier than I could ever imagine and much more interesting that I could ever imagine. It’s fruity, green, raw, floral, and a little bitter.

According to the company’s Olfactive Star, this scent is heaviest on green mandarin, absinthe, and lisylang. I know what the 1st two are, but lisylang, never even heard of it. Well, it is a Robertet creation and is described as an aquatic floral note. So I guess I won’t be getting this wonderful “flower” for my garden, haha. Tamara Charleston wears closely to the skin like other Crazylibellule & The Poppies solid fragrances. It is soft and intimate. When I first put this on my skin and took a whiff, it took me to a place. It really reminded me of something but I didn’t know what. Then it hit me. It reminds me of this abandoned house down the road that I pass on my evening strolls. It is a menacing, rotting craftsman with an unkept yard. This yard grows widly and bears fruits like figs, olive, peaches, apricots, and blackberries with no maintenance. The weeds are grown up and have taken over. Across the street a wild jasmine grows. I will stand there, checking the ripeness of the fruit because I am so bumrushing the fruit trees one day, a warm breeze will go by and it brings in a scent that reminds me of this fragrance. I guess because of the jasmine, unripe fruits, dried out weeds, and a warm sea breeze, it is like this little stick. So I was a bit stunned when I sniffed this. It is much prettier than that abandoned lot but it reminds me of it, I refer to that lot as my secret garden. Anyways, I bet you are ready for a fragrance review.

Tamara Charleston smells fresh and green. It smells almost ammonia-ish from the unripe or green mandarin. This gives a complex and very different citrus to this blend. Strangely this is my favorite note. It smells slightly floral. The blossom smell airy and light. It isn’t like I smell “jasmine” but more that I feel like I am catching the odor of a warm breeze being carried in from a flower garden. I just go “flowers” but I can’t identify them directly. It smells warm and sweet just like cut hay and amber resin. You also get a “warm” fuzziness from an almost perfectly ripe peach. It’s a sweet peach, maybe from a hint of sugar in the absinthe. The absinthe is there and it provides a bitter “green” note. It isn’t licoricey but smells more like if you were standing over a mixed herb garden that contains everything from fennel to juniper.

This scent is a winner. I really like it because I have absolutely nothing like it in my extensive collection. It is fresh, bitter, and green but still really pretty and wearable. I think it is a perfect scent for late summer and early fall. I also love the attention to detail by Crazylibellule & The Poppies. Their inspiration was a hedonistic visual artist. They’ve done nice things like use absinthe in this blend, something historically loved by bohemian artists. “L’Histoire” on the box brings to mind an encounter with one of Tamara’s models and/or lovers. I love solid perfumes and  I love that I carry this cute thing around with me. It is available at beautyhabit.com and b-glowing. com for under $20.

Yves Saint Laurent’s spring 2009 color collection is made to represent “contemporary art” (like that actually has any meaning anymore.) I guess it does look like a watered down and pastel Rothko; however, it reminds me of soft watercolors, much like shu uemura’s spring 09 collection. I do like the look. I would of never of thought of pairing such warm peach lips with cool “mermaid” like shades. But, I have to admit that I like it. The colors are very “spring”.

FACE: There is the Palette d’Artiste Collector Pallete for Complexion. It contains four powder face colors for the face and retails for $62. It has a perfect bronze, pale pink highlighter, pretty pink blush, and a vivid and tiny stripe of coral. I really like the compact. It is “striped” so I would obsess over mixing the colors. I would want to keep it in its pretty and new state. But, that is just because I am weird.

EYES: There is the Palette d’Artiste Palette for Eyes. It contains four powder eyeshadows and retails for $62. The colors include: sheer and pale honey gold, soft and light pearly pink, tiny stripe of deep purple, and smoky sage. The colors are pretty. Stuff that I would of never paired together and think pairing them together will take alot of work. Two Ombre Duolumieres Eye Shadow Duos have been relaunched. This includes Ivory Beige/Deep Black and Oatmeal/ Petroleum Blue. These retail for $41. An Ever Steel Blue Everlong  Lengthing Mascara has been launched. I love colored mascara. It retails for $28.50. Two Automatic Eyeliners have been launched in Easy Brown and Easy Blue. These retail for $32.

LIPS & NAILS: There is the Gloss Pur Lip Gloss and I love it. Each tube goes for $29. These colors are super glossy and beautiful and without the shimmer. Some of my favorites include Pure Coral as seen on the model above, Pure Rose which is a super sheer 60’s pink, Sheer Nude which is a super sheer milky beige, and Pure Raspberry which is a vivid warm pink. There are a few Rouge Pur Lipsticks with SPF. They retail for $30. There is Blazing Red, Silky Apricot, Paradise Pink, Romantic Pink, Hazlenut, and Tea Rose. I really like all of the shades especially Blazing Red, Silky Apricot, and Paradise Pink. Two super cool Nail Touch Nail Colors are out in Tender Pink Touch and Coral Touch. They are both very sheer and retail for $26.

I am a huge fan of the lipcolors in this collection. I love “milky” shades. The gloss is very pretty. The limited edition items are OK. They all come in super luxurious gold compacts. I am tempted by the face palette but I doubt I’ll give in. I’m no longer easily impressed and my collection is filled to the max.

TokyoMilk Waltz Parfum is a clean and fresh floral that is perfect for spring. At first spritz it is both energetic and sweet. It smells slightly like raw honey, but not in a sickly sweet or sticky way. It really balances the green and floral notes. It smells of linden. Linden is a lovely note. It is slightly citrus, lime-like and floral. It is so artful in this composition because it blends so nicely with the “honeyed rose” note that is vaguely honeysuckle-ish. I have a family of beekeepers and linden honey is often priced for its sweet floral citrus taste. It is practically ambrosia in my mind. Also, I am a tea addict and I love linden tea (made from the tree’s flowers) especially mixed with linden honey and a dash of orange blossom water. I fall hard for this fragrance from first spritz. Fragrance is about memories and this scent takes me to a place that is partly my memories and partly fantasy. The fragrance is a monofloral linden limey citrus in a bouquet of roses. Which from the smell, makes me want my ambrosia quality linden honey and linden tea mixed with a bit of rose water. The rose is light and not “old-fashioned”. In fact, it does remind me more of delicate rose water than of 50’s rose perfume or tuberose blends. By the time you’ve been able to appreciate the linden and rose mix, you are taken over by the invasive wisteria blossom. I love wisteria, don’t get me wrong. It is such a wonderful floral fragrance. It is a bit of a “green” floral and reminds me of watery fruit, like grape or kiwi. My grandfather had these planted around an open patio and it was used (trained) as shade. The smell was wonderful in a gentle summer breeze. He had a few different types of wisteria, some used for bonsai and the others as free growing trees. This wisteria reminds me of the tall Chinese wisteria. I don’t know what was really used in this mix but this is what it reminds me of.  It feels like the wisteria “vines” in this fragrance will take you over. I love that. The fragrance is faintly citrus from the linden, sweet from the honey, floral from the rose, fresh from the wisteria. It claims to have white musk. The white musk doesn’t take over and really keeps the rest of the scents grounded. It is a beautiful composition, just like a Waltz. Tokyo Milk got the name and the image right on this one.

The bottle looks like all the other TokyoMilk fragrances with it’s simple glass bottle. The sticker has a lovely black and white evening ball print on it. It is is beautiful complete with the heady chandelier. It really completes the fragrance since the fragrance really reminds me of a Fragonard painting with its flirtiness and feminine charm. The fragrance wears for many hours. I wore it to Pike Place in Seattle, one of the stinkiness places in the universe due to fish markets, tourists, and bohemian BO, and I could still smell myself. And so could others. I managed to smell like a spring/summer breeze. It retails for $28 for 1 ounce and can be purchased on beautyhabit.com or b-glowing.com. I have a feeling I am going to go through this one ounce fairly quickly. The floral notes make it dance into spring and the green and citrus notes make it wearable for summer.

shu uemura’s Mirage spring 2009 collection is super soft and delicate with unexpected color combinations. The colors are supposed to be “whimsical and dreamy”. It plays with “light” and “shadow”.  It is very pretty and artistic like watercolors but I fear that it will truly wash me out. However, each separate color is very beautiful. I could wear all the colors, just not together.

FACE:There are two Defining Cheek Palettes. I really like these. Each contain a cream and a powder blush. Used together, the palettes create depth and highlight the complexion. I usually wear a cream blush with a powder blush over it. It wears for such a long time. There is Orange Phase which has a beautiful contouring taupe brown and a bright orange. I love an orange blusher. There is Misty Glow which is a peachy nude and a spring violet. These colors are also pretty but like the other, a bit hard to wear. These retail for $38.

EYES: There are two Eye Shadow Palettes. Each contains three eyeshadow shades. There is Utopia. It is a soft sage green, lighter neutral brown, and baby blue. The colors are very pretty, would look nice used in a room but I will have to play around with them more to see how they work on me. I find that the brown makes things look a bit mucky or too purpley. There is Fantasia. It has a baby pink, smoky plum, and light violet. The colors are very pretty and do work nicely together. I like the pink with the plum in the crease or the violet with the plum in the crease. This would be very pretty with hazel or green eyes. Both retail for $40. There are three Drawing Pencils for Eyes. The formula is nice and smooth. The colors are metallic and really do play with “light”. There is Light Blue, Lilac, and Pink. They retail for $19.

LIPS: There are three Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks. There is 347 which is a medium vivid pink, 768 which is a toned down berry, and 934 which is a warm nude. Each retail for $34. There is a Lip Duo & Tint. It contains a bright red lip tint with a sheer pink gloss. It is a very pretty springy duo. The pots are stackable. This duo retails for $32.

shu uemura cosmetics are usually very nice in quality. The colors are usually very interesting and still very wearable. I like a few of these shades but I didn’t purchase anything from this collection. I didn’t feel the colors really worked for me. I think the eyeshadows will look great on lighter complected blondes and brunettes. I think they will work nicely with blue, hazel and green eyes. The cheek colors are fun but really don’t work for everyone. The lipstick shades are pretty basic, but I do like the lip duo. It looks very “fresh” when paired with pale pink blush and a coat of mascara.
