Fragrance & Food:

Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange wasn’t what I expected it to be at all. I wanted rugged citrus rind/zest mixed with the sweet juices of a blood orange. I wanted something to pick me up in the dead of winter and to be refreshing in the middle of summer. Nope. Instead with this one, I got too much of¬† juicy berries. It isn’t a bad fragrance, it just wasn’t what I expected.

First things first, I’m not a huge fan of strawberry scents. I find them too synthetic and too young. I don’t mind sniffing strawberry scents on others but I can’t stand to smell it on myself. Tuscan Blood Orange is all about strawberries at the initial spritz, the name should not of been Tuscan Blood Orange. It should be something about strawberries. Strawberry fragrance lovers should know about this fragrance. It should be in the title. Instead Pacifica is giving berry lovers and detour and attracting citrus lovers whom most likely will be disappointed with this fragrance. At first spritz it is very strawberry-ish. Think of a limited edition Escada scent. It is that berry. In a short time, you get the zest of tangerines and oranges. This drowns the strawberry; however, since my sniffer is sensitive to strawberry, I still pick it up. The zesty orange peel hangs around. It starts to mellow out with another berry, raspberry. This takes a bit of the “edge” off of the citrus while keeping it bitter. Eventually the fuse together and create something that would make a delicious tropical cocktail. The berry begins to fade and you get a juicy citrus. This is beautiful, fruity, and refreshing. At this stage, I get blood orange juice and pineapple juice, making this one tropical frou-frou fragrance. Oh, but then there is the strawberry zombie! After I start enjoying the fragrance it then morphs back into the strawberry citrus blend that was the top. But, this time the citrus is less apparent.

The fragrance isn’t bad. It just isn’t me and it isn’t something that I see myself wearing frequently. I can name 10 other citrus scents on the market that I love more. This is a very fruity fragrance. I would of really liked this one if it had a floral to balance the berry or if the berries were left out altogether. I really love the heart of the fragrance but I can’t forgive the berries. It doesn’t help that they keep coming back from the dead. This is a “young” fragrance to me. That being said, it is a fun fragrance. I don’t hate it. Sometimes I do want a tropical cocktail-ish fragrance. The price is right with this one and it does wear longer than a Demeter PMU Cologne spray. I do think of it as more of a summer fragrance but I do fear that the berries will make it to icky and sticky for hot summer days.

The fragrance isn’t very long wearing. But, I think wears nicely for the price. It wears much longer than a body spray and cologne. I smell traces of it about 3 hours after spraying. It wears about the same as more expensive EDTs at department stores. The bottle is small and you could “refresh” throughout the day. Plus, it has natural ingredients.

Notes listed include: strawberry, raspberry, mandarin, and Italian sweet orange.

Give this a try if you like very fruity fragrances, tropical drink like fragrances, LE Escada fragrances, Urban Rituelle Sweet Treats Pomegranete EDP, Comptoir Sud Pacifique Mora Bella EDP, Fresh Strawberry Flowers EDP, Marc Jacobs Daisy In The Air EDT, Ralph Lauren Ralph Wild EDT, and/or Demeter PMU Cologne Sex on the Beach.

The 1.2 oz spray retails for $22. It is available at Sephora and Pacifica’s website.

Also, since this is a delicious fragrance and it makes me think of food, here is a Strawberry Compote with Blood Orange Juice. I would add raspberries to give it the full Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange touch.

I love strawberries but unfortunately I can’t eat them. I have an icky allergic reaction to them. I enjoy their scent when I can and will stand over and breathe them in at the market. Unfortunately fragrance technology hasn’t exactly mastered the scent of most fruits. Strawberry is one of those. It seems to smell synthetic (it is) and it smells a bit like a Jolly Rancher would taste (this makes sense because fragrance accord companies are also in the taste accord business). Since, I can’t eat them, I’ll settle for fake strawberry scents. Many on the market are much too sweet or “young” for me, but I’ve included many of the products that I know of that are “heavy” on strawberry accord (good or not in my opinion).

Budget Scents (Under $50): The Body Shop has a “pure” strawberry fragrance that is pretty long wearing and super “fruity”, Strawberry Perfume Oil for $16. It’s sweet but not terrible. Another long wearing juicy, juvenile fruity, strawberry scent is L’Aromarine Fraise Perfume Extract, retails for $9.50. Victoria’s Secret has Strawberries & Champagne EDT for $9.50. This is just like the name implies: strawberry fruit submerged in cheap sparkling wine with a bit of cassis. Strangely I like it. Please don’t judge me ūüôā Carol’s Daughter Ecstasy is a sweet tropical treat with strawberries, fruit, vanilla, and Egyptian musk (one of my weaknesses). It goes for $27 and I like this blend. Think of a more incense like strawberry fragrance. Demeter has Strawberry Ice Cream for $20. Demeter’s is too sweet for me but some people are wild about it and that is why I mention it. CB I Hate Perfume has¬† a Strawberry Accord oil that goes for $25. It’s “fresh” strawberry as far as strawberry scents go. I just wish it was longer wearing.

More Expensive Scents: Estee Lauder Pleasures Delight is much too sweet for my tastes, but many people like gourmand “confection” scents. This is a blend of fruits like strawberry, sweets like caramel, florals, and woods. The 3.4 ounce EDP retails for $72. I’m sure it is a limited edition, Escada Ocean Lounge EDT, but it is a super fruity floral that is really heavy on gummy-ish strawberry. The 3.3 ounce goes for $70. Escada’s aren’t my first choice when I’m shopping but I have to admit that they are fun. I love the bottle of Ed Hardy Woman (but not the scent). This is a fruity-floral heavy on strawberry accord. The largest size goes for $75. I am guilty of actually liking Dior Miss Dior Ch√©rie EDP. It’s sweet with strawberry and caramel but it manages to be “green” with strawberry leaves and sexy with patchouli. The 3.4 ounce goes for $92. All I can remember of Ralph Lauren Ralph Wild EDT is that it smelled like strawberry Kool-Aid. The largest goes for $62.50. This is strange and one of those “isn’t it ironic that I exist niche scents, Hilde Soliani Fraaagola Saalaaata EDP. It is a blend of strawberry and saline and it retails for $175. Montale Mukhallat is a nutty, sweet, gourmand strawberry EDP that retails for $95. It’s a bit more sexy than the rest.

Lip & Body Products: Smith’s Rosebud Strawberry Lip Balm is a nice treat at $7. If you want a super sweet candy-like strawberry experience try Philosophy’s Strawberry Milkshake Shower Gel or Dylan’s Candy Bar Strawberry Licorice bath line. Avon has a tropical fruity strawberry body line: Natural Strawberry & Guava. It is a juicy, tropical line but I think it is a limited edition.

Others worth noting: Hanae Mori Butterfly, Marc Jacobs Daisy, Hollister Crystal Cove Body Mist, Etat Libre d’Orange Delicious Closet Queen EDP, Calypso St. Barth Lily EDP, Aquolina Pink Sugar EDT

Ralph Wild Perfume for Women Eau De Toilette Spray 3.4 Oz by Ralph Lauren

From: BigDiscountFragrances.com

Sometimes I buy things and I really don’t know why I did. This little Eau de Toilette spray is one of those things. It was cheap, $5 for less than an ounce spray. It was summer and I thought for some reason that I would like to smell like strawberries. Why? I have never wanted to smell like strawberries but I guess I thought it would smell fresh for summer. Fruit smells are so difficult to replicate. I know when I added this to my cart I was thinking of farmer’s markets strawberries, slightly ripening and softening in the little baskets under the warm summer sun. I could smell their sickly sweetness that was just strawberry. I know that capturing a fruit is virtually impossible but I thought that it couldn’t go that wrong. I just wanted the “memory” or the “atmosphere” of strawberry. This kind of does that. It is sweet, but not as disgusting as strawberry Jolly Ranchers or big globs of strawberry bubble gum but it does come close. This is sweet and not very realistic. It smells of strawberry in an artificial sense. I’m not upset, I think I payed less than $5 for it. I’ve bought Escada fragrances that were more disgusting. This fixes that berry fix and did teach me a lesson. This would make a nice EDT spray for a little girl or even a teen girl. Or for someone that likes those Escada fragrances that I speak of. I also want to add that strawberries are trying to kill me as I found out this past weekend over a pound of ripe strawberries that I am allergic to them. Argghh! So maybe I’ll come to love this fragrance since I can’t enjoy the real thing.
