I am a lipstick gal. This is something that I wear daily. There is not a shade or a finish that I steer clear of. I was very intrigued when I heard that Tom Ford was launching a lipstick line with 12 colors (wasn’t that how many Private Blend fragrances that were initially launched?). I remember when Tom Ford did a few beauty stunts with Estee Lauder. I was in love with the packaging. The colors in Tom Ford’s own line are much better than those offered by Estee Lauder years ago. The colors range from muted vanillas to fiery 50’s corals to classic bricks. Don’t forget the red. Tom Ford describes these shades as being “re-imagined in a modern and authoritative way”. Yeah, whatever that means. I’ve seen all of these colors before and these shades have been around forever. I guess these are “authoritative” if you aren’t used to seeing your pout covered in bold pigments. The finish is satin, moist but with no sparkle. I do love the finish since it is moist enough to give lips a younger and plumper appearance. Fine lip lines look smooth. I tire of sparkle since it can be created with a gloss top coat. However, the finishes of this lipstick are not as “jelly” and lush as those pictured in his super sexy ads. Nothing in a tube alone creates a finish like that. I wish the company would let out what gooey lip gloss they are using to achieve that Guy Bourdin look. Anyways, the colors are richly pigmented. The formula is creamy with lots of pigment so it does travel. Half a tube will be on your travel mug. It isn’t long-wearing but like I said earlier, the formula is kind to the lips. Lip lines are “filled” in. I haven’t noticed any feathering but I do predict that it could happen.

They have a vanilla aroma, mild enough. It only adds to the butteriness and creaminess of these lipsticks. These are sooo creamy. The packaging is pretty but I expected more vintage charm. Oh, well. I still like it. It is deco enough for me. The ads are super sexy or vulgar depending on your take on Tom Ford. He’s a man that sells sex. He saved Gucci that way and brought YSL fragrances back into the picture.

These retail for $45 each. It’s costly but you’re a grown-up. You know what you will or won’t spend money on. I wouldn’t say this is the best lipstick I’ve ever used, but it is up in my top 5. I’d rather have one of these than 2 of Chanel’s. Currently, they are available at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. So, what did I end up with? True Coral. However, I would love Black Orchid for the fall/winter. Ginger Fawn would make a nice “everyday” color for spring/summer. Check out the website for all of the colors. Between my love of his fragrances and these lipsticks, I’m never going to have enough money to finish my home restoration…

Weekly Cheap Secret:

Milani cosmetics are pretty high quality, especially with its drugstore price tag. I really like their lip products. They usually pack a pigment punch. Milani Lipstick Lip Color in Rose Hip is a perfect example. It is a satin cream finish hot pink. It provides full coverage and feels great on the lips. It does have a slight floral fragrance which makes it seem more expensive than it is. Plus it has that gold packaging which I love. This color reminds me a lot of the YSL Fall 2008 Tuxedo look. And it is fauceted like all those expensive brands (um, Sisley). I like to wear this shade with nude eye makeup when I want the lips to really stand out. I also like to wear it with gray and steel eye makeup, this is very YSL Tuxedo. Or I just wear this with a swipe of black liquid liner. This color makes me feel made up without trying too hard. It retails for $3.50. Can that be beat? Answer: no. It can be purchased at most drugstores and drugstore.com.

You have got to love this Austrian actress look: lovely, soft, and feminine without being too sweet. It’s a nice vintage change from the super popular red lips look. Seeing a lot of red lips this holiday season.

First apply concealer and a powder foundation, I really like MAC Select Cover Up Concealer and MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation. Brows are thick, sculptured and dramatic. If you are blessed with thick brows, just apply a gel brow tamer, if not pencil in brows with MAC Eye Brows in a dark brown like Lingering. Apply a matte, white-ish nude shadow from lashline to brow bone. Use something like Gesso . Apply a light brown like Omega from lashline to crease. Blend with a big shadow brush. In the crease blend a frosty gray like Silver Ring. Line eyes with MAC Eye Khol in Phone Number which is a smoky gray. Line top lashline and bottom lashline. Next apply false lashes and/or black mascara. Mascara should be applied to bottom lashes also. Cheeks are soft and have a Georgia peach look. Apply MAC Powder Blush in Pinch O’ Peach. I love this shade, looks great on eyes too. Brush onto the apples of cheeks. Apply a lip liner like MAC Cremestick Liner in Summerfruit which is a pale coral. Apply MAC Lipstick in Ravishing for peachy perfect lips. Apply MAC Lipstick in Vegas Volt if your skintone is deeper. Curl hair and tossle for a messy sultry look. Apply fragrance, no one is dressed without it, I’m thinking something like Chanel Cristalle EDT, with its peachy green goodness.

Here’s another cover of the blonde Sandy Warner, looking as beautiful as always. This 1959 release was “exotic” with the sounds and instruments of Cuba and Africa all played by the comforting face of Martin Denny. In a time where the sounds of Asia or the Pacific Ocean or Africa were all labeled “exotic” and could only be played by one man willing to go there. Anyways, I love the records, don’t get me wrong. But, that is so funny to me. I mean World Market still does the same hokey thing as saying all non-whitey places are “exotic” with their hokey keyboard generic “ethnic” music playing while you buy wicker crap and rustic wind chimes.

Anyways, to get this lovely Afro-Desia look. Use your favorite foundation (the face is matte) such as Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet Mattifying Foundation if you are oily. You can use a powder foundation like Lancôme Dual Finish Powder Foundation for normal skin. Pat concealer where needed and dust lightly with a loose powder such as NARS Loose Powder. Sandy is all about the brows, fill brows in with Benefit Instant Brow Pencil in your shade. Use the spoolie on the end to blend and brush brows into place. Use a nude eyeshadow all over the eyelid such as L’Oreal Eyeshadow Single in Sandy Shores. Use a gray powder in the crease all the way down to the lashline. Use something such as Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow in Pervesion and blend well. This look is all about the liner. Line eyes thickly with Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eyeliner in Black. Make sure to wing it out for a cateye look. Smudge a little of the gel liner onto the lower lashline to make the bottom lashes appear thicker. Apply false eyelashes or coat lashes heavily with Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara in Black. Lightly dust cheeks with Jane Mineral Blush in Outspoken Pink. Now to the lovely lips. Line lips with Sephora Brand Lip Pencil in Boysenberry or any rich magenta lip pencil. Fill in lips with the classic Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Cherries In The Snow. One of my favorite lipstick shades. Your done!
