I’m a sucker for chalky pink lipstick. The other thing that I am a sucker for is “cateyes”. So, I’m loving Claudia’s look. To get this look:

FACE: Apply concealer if and where needed. If you have under eye circles to cover, I like L’Oreal Visible Lift Line-Minimizing Under Eye Concealer. I would apply a powder foundation like Clinique Perfectly Real Makeup Compact in your shade. Apply a little bit of bronzer to cheeks as a blush like Maybelline Expert Wear Bronzer Pressed Powder in Salsa Sun.

EYES: Brows are brushed in place and filled with a powder. I would use a brow powder/wax kit like Estee Lauder Brow Perfecting Duo. Apply the powder with a brush then set with wax. It’s simple and really completes a look. Apply a light shadow like Clarins Single Eyeshadow in Vanilla Beige from lash line to brow. These eyes are all about the liner. I love Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. Take a liner brush that you are comfortable with. For me, this is a thin and fine point art brush. Apply the liner thickly to the top lash line and winging out. Apply a “half” line to the lower lash very thinly. Connect your top and bottom lines for a retro look. Apply a few coats of black mascara to top and bottom lashes.

LIPS: Make sure lips are well moisturized and not flaky. You may want to exfoliate and deep conditioning lips a day before doing this look. Chalky pink lipstick is so pretty but it doesn’t work on dry lips. NYX Round Lipstick in Strawberry Milk is the perfect shade for this look. It looks just like the color Claudia is wearing in the photo. Apply it directly from the tube on healthy lips. I’ve been through a few tubes of this shade. It’s a great retro pink.

silverliners

Sometimes I get hung up on finding a product. I’m still searching for the perfect deep, matte purple full-coverage lipstick and a perfect yellow shimmer eyeshadow that doesn’t come across as gold. The other day it was silver eyeliner. Luckily, there are many options out there. I love silver eyeliner when it is used to “open” up the eyes (pencil formulas). I also love it as the “first” layer with a thinner stripe of black liquid liner applied below it. I love silver with deep, dramatic lips. Here is what I came across as I went “shopping”.

Cheaper (under $10): Avon’s mark Metalliner Hook Up Eye Glam in Quick Silver is a liquid silver eyeliner. It’s cheap and is nice if you only occasionally want a silver eyeliner like for a night out. I found that it only wore for about a work day (8 hours) and then flaked really, really bad. It retails for $5.50. NYX has a Liquid Liner in Silver that goes for $5. There is also a NYX Longwearing Eye Pencil in Silver that goes for $2. It’s a very nice pencil for the price. Sephora brand has a Nano Eyeliner in Precious Silver for $5 (not pictured). It’s a smaller pencil but not a bad formula. And Sephora Brand has a liquid, foiled silver liner, Long Lasting Metallic Eyeliner in Silver. It goes for $10 and has that classic liquid liner felt tip. Another cheaper liquid liner option is Boots Stay Perfect Eye Liner in Star for about $9 (not pictured). L’Oreal Hip Color Chrome Eyeliner in Silver Lighting is a nice Urban Decay substitute. It goes for $10. Manic Panic Metallic Eyeliner in Silver Stardust is a silver pencil liner for under $9.

More Expensive: Diane Brill Eye Jewelry Liquid Eyeliner Lace Diamonds is a shimmery, long wearing formula with a fine brush. It retails for $24. Shu Uemura has 2 great silver eyeliners in different formulas. There is the Painting Liner in Silver. This is a long wearing waterproof formula. What I like about it is that you get to use your favorite liner brush and you can use this as a shadow if you apply it with a shadow brush or fingertips. It goes for $24. If you prefer a super smooth pencil there is Drawing Pencil in ME Silver 06 that retails for $19. There is Prescriptives Moonbeam Reflective Eyeliner in Beaming Silver for $17.50 (not pictured). I love Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil formula and there just so happens to be a silver called Dime for $17 (not pictured). Another one in the same price point and similiar long-wearing formula is Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in Silver for $17 (not pictured). If you are looking for a more “natural” eye liner in a silver try Korres Soft Eyeliner Pencil in Silver. It’s nice for sensitive eyes and goes for $16 (not pictured). If you are looking for a silver glitter in a silver base try NARS Glitter Pencil Eyeliner in Roxbury. It retails for $24 (not pictured). And if you want the same thing but in a liquid base try Kat Von D Autograph Eyeliner in Love Metal for $16 (not pictured). If you want a silver cream liner in a spooky packaging try Manic Panic Spider Liner in Stardust. It retails for under $17 (not pictured).

greennailcolors

I am totally craving dark green nails for the cooler months. (It all started with Butter London’s British Racing Green.) I have been searching for the perfect, mysterious, deep, dark green. I want something the color of a Douglas fir tree. I think an evergreen makes a great winter shade. Here is a list of dark green nail colors that I have stumbled across.

Budget green colors (Under $5): NYX Nail Polish in Las Vegas (not pictured) is a shimmery green with envy deep money green. It’s a nice formula and a good price at $4. Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Fast Dry Nail Color in Jumpin’ Jade Frost is a perfect for winter, shimmery, rich peacock green shade. I really do love this formula because it does dry quickly and you never have to worry about smudges. It retails for about $4. Rimmel 60 Seconds Nail Polish in Green With Envy is a jade-ish green shimmer. It takes a few coats to get it darker. It has a nice price at about $3. It isn’t my favorite out of this list but it is what you pay for and nice if you don’t plan on wearing this color very frequently.

More Expensive green colors (Over $5): I’m totally obsessed with Butter London Nail Lacquer in British Racing Green. “British racing green” is one of my favorite colors anyways. I’ve always wanted a vintage Triumph in this shade. It’s snazzy. This shade is dead on that “racy” color. The formula is great and it’s a Seattle based company so I have to love them. It’s pricey at $14. OPI for Sephora Nail Coulour has Dark Room. This is a satin shimmer free deep, almost black green. I wanted to love this color but when I saw it in person, I found it to be less than “film-noir” inspired like the claim but more mucky and boring. It is still a nice alternative to black though. It retails for $9. Lippman Collection Nail Color in Don’t Tell Mama is a super shimmery, metallic deep green with a dash of blue. It’s enchanting, very festive. It goes for $16. OPI Nail Color in Here Today…Aragon Tomorrow (not pictured) is a rich, moody emerald. It’s a beautiful shade that goes for about $8. Illamasqua Nail Varnish (not pictured) in Rampage is a nice dark forest green that looks like what I am looking for; however, I have never tried this formula. It retails for $14.

neonnailpolishcollage

I wouldn’t dare wear neon  but I would when it comes to cosmetics. I swoon for richly pigmented orange and pink lipstick or electric green eyeliner or teal eyeshadow. I also love a bright nail polish. No neon running shorts, I’ve already lived through that, can’t do it again. So I’ve put together some of my favorite shades in all price ranges. I haven’t found a chip-free, long-lasting nail color yet. I have learned that price has nothing to do with quality. One of the worst polishes I have ever used has been Chanel and some of the best I have used included Sally Hansen. Poor quality is found both in the high and low price ranges. I’m just loving the colors of these, even if they last a week or one day.

More Expensive: Pop Beauty Nail Glam Nail Polish in Yellow (pictured above) and Pinkest (satin hot pink). I think Target carries this brand now. Butter Nail Color in Snog (a Barbie hot pink). So far I have been pleased with this brand, available on beauty.com. USLU Airlines Nailpolish MQC (day glo pink, pictured above) and DSL (hot orange). Essie Neon Collection in Funky Limelight (bold yellow/green), Flirty Fuschia (hot pink), Perky Purple (deep, bold, warm purple), and Punchy Pink (lighter hot pink). Sephora by OPI Nail Colour in Arm Candy (hot pink), Cab Fare (shimmery yellow), and Domestic Goddess (cool, bright purple), all available at Sephora. OPI in No Room For The Blues (bold, lighter blue), In My Back Pocket (lighter hot orange), On Collins Ave. (very vivid orange-red/tomato), Electric Eel (neon green shimmer, pictured above), Need Sunglasses (bright, bright yellow), or Blue My Mind (LCD light blue). These can be found at salons and I am pretty happy with thier quality.

Cheaper: China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Turned Up Turquoise (hot sea green, pictured above) and Pink Voltage (mind boggling hot pink). Sally Hansen Lacquer Shine Nail Color in Bright (hot coral orange, pictured above) and Flash (a LCD blue), both brands found at drugstores or ulta.com. NYX Nail Polish in Lime (bright lime green), Dolly Pink (hot pink), Paradise (bright aqua), or Orange. Sinful Nail Enamel in Neon Melon (hurt your eyes neon green) or Folly (hot pink).Try LA Girl Flare Nail Polish or Splash Nail Polish in any shade really. All of the last few listed can be found on cherryculture.com.

So who doesn’t want a Veruschka inspired look? That’s right. Nobody. So since this look is an inspiration, I’m not taking it too literal. Not many people want to go around with white splotches on their faces. But, oh, it is still going to be OTT. First apply a luminous tinted moisturizer to the face, something like Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer. Apply concealer where needed. I really like Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen. Apply a light dusting of loose powder if you worry about shine. If you don’t care about shine and you want to luminous and plastic like I like to, then apply Milani Glimmer Stripes All Over Color in Pink Glimmer. Take a medium size brush and apply it over the browbones, down the nose, and over the cheekbones. Brush brows into place with a clear brow gel like The Body Shop Brow & Lash Gel. Apply a super shimmery eyeshadow from lashline to brow, for pale skins use something like Dior One-Colour Eyeshadow in Icy White, darker and tan skintones can use it in Ready -To-Beige. You just want a super shimmery white to beige shade. In the crease apply a super shimmery taupe brown like Dior One-Colour Eyeshadow in Brown Sequins. Take a fat, fluffy eye brush and apply the shade with eyes open, just a little above the crease. Blend and build until you get what you like. Apply more of the lighter shade into the inner portions of the eye closest to the nose to illuminate. Apply a bit of the darker shadow around the bottom lashline. Take a liner brush of your choice and apply gel liner close to the lashline to “thicken” lashes. I like the Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner in Dark Brown. Smudge this shade around the bottom lashes if your lashes are thin there to create depth. The false lashes really make this look. Find a fun pair of lashes. Alot of times drugstores and Sally’s have them. Ardell is a nice brand. shu uemura makes some killer pairs but they are usually limited edition. ( I really want the “velvet” pair.) MAC gets has them too. Oh, and NYX has 55 fun pairs. Apply and look fab. Apply NYX Long Pencil Lip Liner in Mauve around lips. This is one of my favorite liner shades. Apply MAC Lipstick in Snob, another one of my favorite shades. Apply a clear shimmery lip gloss such as L’Oreal Colour Juice Sheer Lip Gloss in Peek-A-Boo Clear. Apply a soft pink blush like Revlon Powder Blush in Softspoken Pink. Apply more highlighting shimmer if needed. A bronzer can be applied to the cheeks if you want a darker look. I think La Prairie Midnight Rain EDP really works with this look.

Maybe it is because I am a closet goth. But, I love the cool toned grapey purple lip look. I love a matte purple with really minimal eye makeup. I love the blue-ish tinted lip whitening sheer violet lip glosses with loud pink eyes. I love a purple hued lip stain with warm, coral eyes. I love it all. But, seriously, this is a difficult shade to wear and a difficult shade to find. It is so frustrating. So that is why I am sharing what I have found with you.

Lipstick: I love a purple lipstick look with minimal eye makeup. That bare even, mascara less look, if the purple is deep enough. I also like it in an 80’s way if the eyes are done a nice, light baby pink with a medium toned purple lip. I have even mixed an almost white purple lipstick for myself to wear with dark, dark eyes. I looked a bit dead but hey, I’ll try anything in the name of fashion. I find that when I find a purple I like, I better buy it because chances are it won’t be around long. Rimmel made an amazing one. It was truly deep and purple but it was amazing because it had lots of silver shimmer. I bought like 10 tubes, which was good because I have never seen it since. It was like I purchased what all the company had. Dior used to have an amazing one too, but it is no more. Even MAC is lacking in this area. However, MAC has two deeper ones that I like. Cyber is a lovely almost black purple but it is very difficult to work with. It is a satin finish which is stupid. It is very difficult to keep uniformed even with foundation on the lips. It wants to gather in certain areas. Your lips have to be flawless and baby bottom soft for it to wear evenly too. But man, once you get it to work it looks amazing. I also like Rebel which is a more on the berry side or purple. It looks nice with that nude eye makeup look. NYX has a pretty good purple selection. They have in their Black Label the shade Seductive which is a medium purple. They have a super shimmery shade in the Diamond Sparkle Lipstick, Sparkling Orchid. This one is a bit to berry pink on me but if you put a black gloss over it, it looks amazing. In their classic formula they have a few nice shades: Orpheus which is a muted grape, Pandora which is a flashy magenta violet, and Iced Lavender which is a super pale and shimmery purple that looks great over other shades. NYX has a great Lipstick Pencil in Vixen which is a deep, dark and gothic purple. Manic Panic has a few goth friendly shades in Black Rose which is a deep, deep purple berry matte and Tramp which is a medium purple matte. Since these are matte, the lips must be very smooth. They have a beautiful pearly purple in Plum Passion. Black Radiance has two nice Perfect Tone Lipsticks in Go Girl Grape which is a grape Kool-Aid and Majesty which is more of a berry kissed plum. Sometimes Sephora brand gets nice pure purple shades. Currently they have Lip Attitue Star in Audaciaous Violet and Plum Vertigo (what is so glam about vertigo anyways?) Victoria’s Secret has an easy to wear pink purple in their Perfect Lipstick in Stiletto. I call it the “work” purple.

Lip Gloss: MAC has a Lipgelee in Moistly which really isn’t much of a purple, but more of a berry. It is very sheer and looks nice with rust eye makeup. NYX has a Sheer Gloss in Lavender Note which is a pale lavender shimmer. It wears nicely over pinks. There are two nice NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Purple Rain a lovely pure purple and Orchid which is another one of those berry, fuchsia hybrids. There is a NYX Sheer Tube Lip Gloss in Lilac which reminds me of MAC’s Moistly. Black Radiance has a nice sheer lipstick in Vogue Vixen but because of my pale skin and the fact that this is sheer it looks a little too pink on me. Stila has a Lip Glaze in Black Cherry this is a bright orchid purple fuchsia shade. Shu Uemura has an amazing Gloss Unlimited Lip Gloss in PR 059 N, it is a deep and shimmery royal purple. It looks amazing alone or layered over those pinkish purple lipsticks to make them more purpley. Shu Uemura also has a super sheer lip gloss glaze in the Gloss Lacquer in Irrational Purple. It is just a hint of purple and looks nice with deep, dark eyes.

Lip Pencil: MAC has an OK Lip Pencil in Magenta which is a vivid pinkish purple. It looks nice colored in the entire lip with a frosty pinkish gloss over it. NYX has the Long Pencil in Deep Purple and the Slim Pencil in Deep Purple and Purple Rain. These are my favorite and the most budget friendly. Manic Panic has two nice lip pencils in Deadly Nightshade which is a deep and dark purple and Ultra Violet which is a vivid purple. Max Factor has a High Definition Lipliner in Purple. I also find that a cheap little eyeliner does the same thing.

Purple lips are hard to find and you ever find one please let me know. I usually find them in cheaper brands (NYX, Wet N Wild), brands made for woman of “color” (Black Radiance, Iman, Fashion Fair) and sometimes super high end French makeup will launch one (Dior, YSL, Guerlain.) It’s weird. I just really want a super dark purple lipstick dipped in tons of gold shimmer. And I can’t find it!

primitiva

I don’t know if you really listen to much Martin Denny but it is really perfect this time of year when it’s time for a mojito, but if you don’t like his music you’ll love the babe that is on most of the album covers. Today I will tackle the LP Primitiva album cover from 1958, a time of tiki inspired stripclubs. First, I’d tackle those brows and use a pencil, no gel or powder will cut this intense look. I’d recommend L’Oreal Brow Shaping Duet in Black/Brown. I’d apply a matte finish foundation like Maybelline Matte Mousse Foundation, apply this with a flat buffer brush after applying with fingers. I’d top with a light dusting of Cornsilk Shineless Natural Matte Loose Powder, this product really works with the vintage look. My granny always used it. I’d apply a concealer with a matte finish as well, such as Lancome Effacernes Protective Undereye Concealer. By this time your skin is a perfect matte canvas. Move on to eyes and lay it on thick. I’d use Urban Decay Primer Potion and cover the whole eye area with Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow in Foxy which is a matte ivory. Then, brush NYX eyeshadow in Hawaiian Coffee (what an appropriate name for an Exotica inspired look) in the crease and blend until perfect. Line the upper lashline with NYX Pen Eye Liner in Jet Black in a thick, cat-eyed motion. Apply MAC lashes in 6 Lash and coat with MAC Pro Lash Mascara in Coal Black. Apply a minimal amount of mascara to the bottom lashes for a wide-eyed look. Now, my favorite part is the lipstick. Line lips with NYX Long Lip Pencil in Plush Red. I don’t care what people say about nude lipliners, when you want a bold red lip you must use a bold red lipliner. Apply Chanel Rouge Hydrabase Creme Lipstick in Fire, a vivid warm red shade. My second favorite thing in the whole world: blush. Lightly sweep Nars Powder Blush in Desire, a flushing cotton candy pink, with a fantail brush. It’ll really look natural. Finally, coat those nails in OPI Nail Lacquer in Vodka and Caviar or there new and super cute retro pin-up inspired summer shade, Calender Girl. Then I’d not do doodley squat to my hair and tie my boobs up in some kind of suede rag. By doing this I’m sure somebody will buy you a Mai Tai.

P.S. If anyone knows this lady’s name please share! For years, I’ve wanted to know her back story but I’ve been unsuccessful as far.

Oh, the weather is getting warmer which means that I’m preparing for summer. Or at least my summer makeup trends. Every year I get so amped about oranges, corals, tangerines. My first lovely product is #1 Nars Taj Mahal Powder Blush. It is a beautiful, vivid burnt orange with tons of gold shimmer. It melts into my pale complexion . For years I was terrified of this color because I thought it would look strange on my skin. I thought it was for girls waaay darker than me. Finally, I put it on at Sephora and couldn’t believe how bright and alive looking I could be. I love it, just like all my other Nars colors it is very pigmented. I apply it with a skunk brush and buff it into my cheeks. I keep everything else really simple. I’ll wear a nude beige shadow, mascara and lip balm. Sometimes I wear bronzer with this brush. This is the only blush that I wear that makes my blue eyes stand out.

The next orange product is #2 MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Morange which is a “loudmouth orange” as the MAC website describes it. It is a satiny, bright orange. I like to keep the look simple when I wear this too. I’ll wear a dab of Nars Orgasm Powder Blush, tons of black/brown mascara, groom the brows, and Lancome Le Crayon in Flame (another great orange product) with this lipstick. It really adds a punch to any look.

Product #3 is great if you want a sheerer orange lip is Lancome Juicy Rouge in Nala which is a sheer, buildable orange sparkle. This product has been discontinued for some stupid reason. You can still find it online and it is well worth the search. It has a great feel and no stickiness.

Product #4 puts marmalade on the eyes: NYX Eyeshadow Single in Orange. This color makes all eye colors pop in my opinion. It makes my blue eyes look stunning. This color can be dulled down with bronzes and golds (but why dull down such a beautiful shade?) I like to wear mine with NYX Ultimate Pearl Shimmer Eyeshadow in Sahara Pearl, blend. Use Lancome Artliner in Noir, lots of black mascara, Nars Taj Mahal Powder Blush, Nars Laguna Bronzer and a sparkling nude gloss such as DiorKiss Lip Gloss in Sorbet Meringue.

Product #5 is Max Factor MaxEye Eyeshadow Trio in Queen Bee which includes an orange, lime green, and pollen yellow all with a very subtle shimmer. These colors look great together, so be creative. queen bee

I could keep going on but I feel these are currently my favorite citrus inspired cosmetics.
