Weekly Cheap Find:

I am a fan of lip and cheek stains. In the summer these are my beauty “secrets”. I apply the same stain to both cheeks and lips and sometimes I’ll even wear mascara. It’s perfect for those icky summer days. I was skeptical of these Covergirl lip stains at first. I don’t know why. I think in my mind I thought they were too expensive for a drugstore product, about $8. This is funny. If NARS offered an $8 lip stain, I would think it was a deal. Anyways, I must confess that I am completely in love with this product despite the really poor reviews elsewhere. I love its range, application, and lasting power. And the price is right, even for a drugstore item.

First off, I have been a vandal since day one. Keep Sharpies out of sight. So, I love this marker like application. It really defines the lip line plus it is so fun. It’s like I am drawing on my lips. Avon mark made one of these lip stains years ago. It was awesome and like so many of their products discontinued in like 2 months.  Second, it comes in a wide range of colors. At first I did not get this. Well, these babies aren’t so sheer. They are sheer but they do pack more pigment than what I am used to from a lip stain. This is good, I guess. I have many friends with dark complexions that don’t do many lip stains because they don’t show. This line has a color for everyone. I just wish they would offer testers at the store (that’s the problem with all drugstore cosmetics). Third, it wears for hours and hours! I’m talking like 6 hours with no touch-ups. But, you must let it set first, just like any lip stain. The fragrance/flavor isn’t bad. It’s faintly “fruity”. And the price isn’t bad. I still haven’t been lucky enough to get them on BOGO.

I have three but my goal is to have them all because I am a lip stain freak. The first two I did not try. I was looking for a red and plum lipstain, something that looked berry kissed. I bought 425 Plum Pout. To my surprise this had lots of pigment. It looks very sheer when blotted. However, I am used to a bold lip. I like it’s reddish plum stain. It seriously looks like the inside of a plum. The other is 440 Wild Berry Wink. This is a pretty bold pure cherry red. It is sexy. I don’t mean to sound gross but it is a bloodstain red. So, it’s a “fresh” goth and vampire look. Both colors are pretty bold in comparison to my skin tone. I like them but they are a bit bright. I love the application and formula but wanted something a bit “my lips but better”. I purchased 420 Sassy Mauve. This is it. It’s a perfect mauve lipstain. It’s a perfect blend of pink and brown. It’s super natural flush of the lips. Well, at least for me.

OK, so to the complaints. Many people say that the results are not consistent with this product. I agree. It does fade with time. It’s the applicator. To be honest, there is not much product in the pen. If you want a lip stain for a bargain, you should probably purchase something larger and more liquidy. It will be from the department store but you should consider the cost per use. This Covergirl product is “portable” unlike Benetint so you are getting less product to fit into the portable pen. People do not like the finish. This is a stain. It will not provide shine or moisture. This being said lips must be healthy and not chapped. I really think Covergirl should put that as a “warning”. This product will clump on flakey lips and look awful like that makeup on that chick in Sweeny Todd. Any lip stain will do this on battered lips. Even that Avon mark one had a warning on it. I don’t remember the verbiage exactly but it was like “product will bleed if applied to chapped lips. Do not apply to peeling lips.” I have not tried this product with gloss because I find the purpose of lip stain is to look “natural” and I love its matte finish. I’m sure gloss could be added but from my makeup artist experience with lip stain, just try a balm. If you want shine, wear lip gloss and not lip stain. You can’t have it all.Words like long-wearing, moisturizing, and glossy do not go together. It is an unspoken rule.

I say this is a product to love or to hate. It all depends on expectations. If you are a lip stain fan, you may like this but these carry more pigment than what you may be used to so go a shade lighter than what you desire. If you like hyper-glossy lips then stay away from this. If you want a “base” to wear under your retro gal red lipsticks, then this stuff is perfect. It “holds” matte lipsticks. Anyways, I like it and I’m going to have to pick a few more up before this product gets discontinued. I predict it won’t be around too much longer because of the awful reviews and it’s an expensive product for Covergirl.

I am not a Twilight fan. Saying that I have only seen the movie and have never read the books. I found the movie very, very dull but felt I had to see it since it was like literally filmed in our backyard. The film was beautiful just for the scenery of the lovely rainforests and coast of Washington (even though it did Rialto beach/LaPush no justice). I just found the story really boring and I felt too old for it. I do consider myself a vampire fan and I am a closet goth. I love Nosferatu, Vampyr, Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, etc. And I am a mega fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. So the human/vampire love story is not new to me. Maybe the Twilight books are much better and I could feel some attachment to the characters, but the movie I could care less about. No character development.

Anyways, I can’t deny the popularity of this series. It has brought so much tourism to this area and that makes me happy. Plus, I can’t imagine a better setting for a vampire story than Western Washington. So I’m not going to complain. Maybe if I was 15 I would love this story or if I wasn’t a mega Buffy fan. You can’t travel to Port Angeles, WA or the dumpy Forks without running into Twilighters. They love to spend dough, so it is no surprise to me that DuWop has made a lip plumper in Twilight’s honor. I have to admit that even I am attracted to this product. How badly I want it and I am not a Twilighter! For years I have wanted a lip plumping lip stain and here it is. It is ” a blending of the vampire and human worlds”, meaning it is duo-phase. It is half DuWop Lip Venom lip plumping gloss (which is awesome but burns like hell) and a scarlet lip stain. Oh, and it has gold shimmer. It sounds like a perfect product in my book. However, it is limited edition and I missed out on the special on DuWop’s website. This breaks my gothic heart. I will get my hands on this and I will fight swarms of 15 year old girls and Edward lusters for this product. You can only get 2 anyways, so boo-yah!

Retails for $16 and is now available at Nordstrom. It is supposed to debut this fall at other retailers. I really wish they would make a Buffy/Angel or Buffy/Spike one of these and call it “The Hellmouth” since Lip Venom does plump but it burns your mouth like hell.

Have a thing for sailor pants and deep, dark navy? I do. I always fall for that hokey almost costumey nautical look for summer. It just looks cute and quite pin-up with a bit of prep. I try not to dress like it anymore, since there are actual sailors in town and their uniforms are much cuter than my wardrobe. Anyways, Bobbi Brown’s Nautical Collection is that look that I always pull out every late spring. I love a “fresh” and a no-fuss glow.

This collection was inspired by a trip to Normandy. There she was inspired, quite frankly,  by the local’s wind and sunburned faces. So, she created a “sheer” collection. Who knew chapped skin could be so beautiful?

I really like this collection for summer. But, I am going through a big lip and cheekstain phase right now. It is just crisp and Bobbi Brown says it best in her video featured on her webiste: forgiving. (Watch it if you want.) This look really does work for most people. I really think the model’s look featured above does the collection no justice. She looks gross and creepy. The eyes are much too much for a natural, sea-side inspired look.

Cheeks: There is a Sheer Color Cheek Tint in 6 shades ranging from flushed Blackberry to warm Coral. (Model is wearing Lilac). These are super sheer and of the swivel variety. I like it. It retails for $22. Don’t be fooled, you can use these on your lips as well. On cheeks, pair with a powder blush for long wear.

Eyes: Perfectly Defined Mascara is the mascara for this look. I haven’t tried it. I can’t comment but I usually dislike comb wands. It goes for $22. Eye makeup isn’t specified but I’m sure it is Eye Shadow in Ivory and Navy and Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Graphite Shimmer Ink. I think a swipe of gel eyeliner would of been enough for this look…

Lips: There is the Sheer Color Lip Gloss in four shades. These are so pretty. They are bold pigments in a super sheer formula that ranges from delicate pink to hot pink. It makes the pout look so healthy. Colors include: Cabana Coral, Marina Pink, Popsicle, and Sailor. Marina Pink is my favorite, even though I like them all. These go for $20 and are limited edition.

If you are scared of wine lips but like the look, I suggest you start with something like Alba Terra Tints Natural Tinted Lip Balm in Garnet. This is a traditional lip balm packed with a minty tingle and flavor. It is very sheer. Burt’s Bees Lip Tints have a ton more pigment than this. Garnet is a super sheer plummy, reddish wine. It is a little darker and more red than my natural lip color. The texture of this is kind of thick, which is a bonus. It doesn’t need applied frequently. It is not crumpley or lumpy. The color looks pretty natural with a hint of “wine stain” and very faint sheen. It is great for people that want to try color but are just scared. Alba Garnet makes for a nice pair of training wheels. It has a SPF 18 that doesn’t cause my lips to become irritated. This is rare, most SPF lip products cause me to have itchy burning lips. This product is like a lip stain but it actually mositurizes and protects the lips. It retails for about $3.99 and is available on drugstore.com and most drugstores and health food stores.

I’m a mega Wonder Woman fan: from comic books to the hokey TV show. Lynda Carter is one beautiful gal and she totally rocked the Wonder Woman look. It’s a really “fresh” late 70’s look. I’m sure you’re bound to get a little flushed when kicking so much ass. You know fighting for our rights, in your satin tights.

To get this wonderful look, apply a tinted moisturizer. I like Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital Teint Tinted Moisturizer. Dab concealer where necessary, I like Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen for under eye circles. Dust a loose powder over face to keep shine under control. Fighting villains, now don’t look too glossy! I really like Guerlain Les Violettes Matte Touch Powder, yes souly for the scent. Wonder Woman’s brows are killer and stenciled. Fill in brows with a pencil such as Dior Powder Brow Pencil in Black, use a stencil if you must. I love harsh brows… Dust a nude eyeshadow from lashline to brows. Use something like Lancome Color Design Eye Shadow Single in Filigree which is a sheer shimmering warm nude. Now blend something like Lancome Color Design Eye Shadow Single in Ciel du Soir , a matte pebble gray, from lashline to crease. Line eyes with a liquid liner such as Lancome Art Liner in Noir, creating a “cat eye” effect. Apply false lashes and/or tons of black mascara. Dust cheeks with a sheer peachy blush such as NARS Powder Blush in Amour. It adds just enough flush. I love Wonder Woman’s flushed lips. Use the new Lipstick Queen Medieval Lipstick which adds a stained reddish flush to lips. So lovely! As far as scent goes, I have no idea what Wonder Woman would wear, I would think of something femme but fresh and perhaps unisex, something strong and full bodied. I was thinking of something like Guerlain Vol de Nuit. It’s really hard to decide, please comment, would she wear something leathery? Something vetivery? Anyways, at least I have her makeup down.

I love lip stains. They look fresh natural and just like you’ve had a glass wine sans the headache. I like to wear them alone or with gloss or under my deeper lipstick shades to make them last longer. They are very easy to wear. You just fill in your lips and go. They are meant to be you lip shade but better. Just remember to wash your fingers if you use them with finger tips. You don’t want those berry stained. There are a ton on the market and I am going to review a few that I have used or use.

Benefit Benetint: This is the rose scented and rose colored liquid that I use on my cheeks frequently. I have used it as a lip stain many times before. Let me just say I do not love it as a lip stain. It is too liquidy and will run into fine lines around the lips. I am 24 years old and this should be the least of my worries when applying makeup. I can’t get this stain to apply evenly and it will appear darker in lines on the lips. Plus it is too rosy tasting for my liking. The Benetint Lip Balm is not much better. It is a balm/gloss infused with Benetint. I find it messy and runny too. Benetint sells for $28.

Vincent Longo Lip & Cheek Gel Stain: This stuff comes in a lip gloss like container with a sponge doe foot applicator making it easier to apply to the lips. It has a thicker texture (gel) and doesn’t run like Benetint. It stays put and comes in numerous shades from deep burgundy to brown. Personally, I like Apollonia which is a deep plum that really adds a wonderful berry stain and I like My Sunshine which is  a deep warm red. I find that this stuff works great as a lip and cheek stain. Sells for $22.50.

NARS Lip Stain Gloss: I love the shades in these because they are more red and more my speed. This has a sponge tip applicator and looks like the other tubes of NARS lip gloss. Some of these have shimmer. These are pretty moisturizing and take a bit longer to dry but they are easy to use. I love the shades Indian Red (bright classic red), Daredevil ( a deeper classic red) and Victoire ( a plum brown). These sell for $24. There are also duo sets available where one end is the stain and the other is a gloss.

Urban Decay Lip Envy: This stuff comes in a cute container with a sponge applicator. It has a vanilla scent which is yummy and dries fairly quickly which I think is a plus in this case. I like Greedy the best which is a deep wine stained merlot. These sell for $17.

LORAC Sheer Wash Travel Size Sheer Wash: This formula comes in a gloss container with a roller ball tip. It is very liquidy and I think hard to use on the lips. Plus, I remember it smelling metallic or perfumey or something that I didn’t like. I could be wrong. It was a while back. Since it is so liquidy it has all the problems of the Benetint that I described above. These go for $19.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Lip Stain Duo: This is a duo lip stain where one end is a stain and the other is a clear gloss. I like the fragrance and the texture of these. Cherry Stain is a bright sheer red that looks really fresh. It sells for $20.

Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Makeup Lip Stain: OK I hate Victoria’s Secret for a multitude of reasons. Mainly because one of their bras was so poorly constructed that on the initial wear the underwire poked through and stabbed my boob viciously, but anyways… This stuff comes in a felt tip marker package like the Stila and the shades range from brown to red, all with names that are trying to be sexy but come across as cheap. The formula is pretty nice and wears a long time. The packaging is portable and easy to use. I like the shades Unzipped which is a berry plum and Muse which is a soft rose. Retails for $12 and may or may not stab your boob viciously.

I’ve tried a few more and I don’t think they exist anymore. I had one from L’Oreal, Lancôme, and Borghese and those were nice. And Avon had one that was tasted like metal. I know they are plenty more on the market to try: ModelCo, TheBalm, Sephora Brand, Revlon, heck even American Eagle have one. Definitely try one but if you plan on using them on the lips I’d stick to a gel or a formula that is in a “pen”.

Seabeck

Seabeck, WA: Where I spent the week-end

juicy

I had a nice weekend enjoying the warmth of a Pacific Northwest summer, gorgeous mountain views and salt water aromas. I had a nice picnic where I was harassed by some auburn bellied squirrel thing that for real tried to climb up my leg in hopes of a pinch of tortilla. Berry bushes are flowering and fruiting; hence, inspiring one of my favorite looks of all: berry lipstick. I spent most of my freshman year of college wearing a vintage, gray wool blazer, my hair in it’s natural color and long as heck in a tight bun, no eye makeup: not even mascara and I’d wear the deepest wine and berry lipsticks and glosses I could get my hands on. I’d mega highlight my facial features with glossy highlighting creams and gels. It was a very librarian meets Madonna stage for me and one of my favorites. I love Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Wine Sinner, a deep matte merlot that comes in wonderful deco packaging. I used to wear MAC Media, a satiny reddish-purple and Cyber, my closet goth blackish purple satin finish favorite. These colors are very pigmented and have a tendency to cake however. You must use a primer beforehand.  I used MAC Lip Pencil in Vino a violet purple. Burt’s Bees used to make a wonderful deep, almost black purple lipstick. Hmm, wonder why they don’t make that anymore? The closest thing they have now is Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in Merlot which is a shimmery wine with a minty tingle. Still not as good as the lipstick they used to make but still a great product. It’s a steal at $5. I wore so much of Chanel Rouge Hydrabase Lipstick in Vamp, a very dark plumish  berry. I feel like I am the reason why it still exists, I really messed up the marketing data by buying so much of it. Plus, Uma Thurman in Pulp fiction has kept that shade alive. Benefit Silky-Finish Lipstick in Raisin’ Cane (yes a redneck name, but a great color) is a brownish wine bronze that adds color without being too purple. When I felt like I couldn’t find shades with enough pigment, I found myself drawn to brands like Iman, Fashion Fair, or Black Radiance. Iman Luxury Moisturing Lipstick in Black Brandy is heavenly. Recently, I have found L’Oreal Hip Lipstick in Extrovert, a deep brown-ish berry and Rimmel Moisture Rich Lipstick in Hype, a deep berry. I’ve been through 2 Hypes already. Nobody can beat the price and quality of that lipstick.  A red berry shade that is rich and glam is Guerlain KissKiss Lipstick in Cuivre Fusion which is a golden berry red that feels so smooth on the lips. I used to wear Kevyn Aucoin The Liquid Lipstick in Aquarouge which is a really deep red brown with lots of shimmer. It adds alot of dimension to the lips. I used to have to buy it at some local boutique but now Sephora carries it which is nice.

For those of you that don’t like the idea of having almost gothic lips, then glosses are stains are for you. Nars Lip Gloss in Boogie Nights, a metallic pink-ish raspberry is a great choice. The classic Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey is a must for anyone in my opinion.  I find myself wearing it all the time, out and about and to my conservative job. Tarte 24/7 Lip Sheer in Friday and Lola Tinted Lip Balm in Voluptuous are great don’t even think about it berries because they are in a “ChapStick” container. Urban Decay Lip Envy Lipstain in Greedy is so easy to use. It is a deep berry that goes on sheer and looks great with gloss over it. L’Oreal Hip Lipgloss in Outstanding looks like a really dark shimmery berry but applies very light and fresh looking. I love cosmetics but I love it when my lips are stained by berries or wine.
