Malin+Goetz Grapefruit Face Cleanser is a gel cleanser formulated for all skin types with a light, natural grapefruit aroma. I have normal skin but in the summer here in the PNW with no A/C, my skin gets greasy. This product did great for my skin when used at night. My skin was left smooth with no drying. I don’t know if this is a formula that I could use in winter. It may be too drying for my otherwise normal skin type. (I typically prefer cream cleansers in the cooler months).

There is a super light fragrance that is “naturally occurring”. It is a faint, vitamin C citrus. It isn’t strong or offensive. The gel foams nicely, especially with the help of Shiseido Cleansing Massage Brush. This leaves my skin feeling very clean and refreshed. I think this cleanser did a good job of cutting grease. I don’t know if it is the best at removing makeup since I’ve only been wearing a light dusting of powder lately. But, I would think that it does a nice job because it removes oil so nicely. I also want to add that this cleanser leaves my skin feeling smooth, thanks to citrus enzymes and amino acids. I do think it is a nice match with that Shiseido brush. It’s gentle everyday exfoilation. Everybody likes the look of a healthy glow.

An 8 fl.oz. bottle retails for $30. It is available at beauty.com and Barney’s.

Weekly Cheap Secret:

OK, so I don’t think this is a secret. For my entire life I kept hearing how awesome this stuff was. It was always winning consumer awards and being recommended by dermatologists. I never gave it a try because I was too busy trying every other expensive thing on the market. As I grew up and grew wise, I realized that a cleanser should do one thing: clean. It needs to prep the face for treatments. It isn’t a product that stays on skin. It doesn’t do anything, we wipe it off. So why spend $35 on something like that? I just want something simple and non-drying. This is it. I can use it twice a day without being irritated. (I have normal skin). The formula is thin but mixed with a little bit of water, it foams and foams. It has a fragrance, a light floral. It doesn’t sting the eyes. I try to use it to remove eye makeup like the product recommends. My eye makeup is too stubborn or I just wear too much. I still have to use an eye makeup remover to get it all off. But, it does get the rest of my makeup off very easily, including lip and cheek stains. I like the convenient pump. I just keep it in the shower.

The product is oil-free and 100% soap free. It’s a pretty good price at about $6 for 6 oz. I thought it would last a while but my husband has been using it twice daily and we are really going through this stuff. I guess I should learn that these “cult” products are worth a try and to just get over my negative Maybelline Great Lash experience. It is available at drugstore.com and DERMAdoctor.

I am not putting these in the “weekly cheap secret” category. If you do the math, these pre-moistened pads are not a deal. They retail for $7.50 for 28 pads. I wash my face twice daily. So this tub is about 2 weeks worth. That’s about $15 a month and $180 a year. For that price, I could use any facial cleanser on the market! This is making In Fiore Cleansing Balm ($125) and Sisley ($120) look inexpensive.

This product isn’t bad. I bought it because I was going through that crazy move thing and needed something portable and “easy”, simplified. These are pre-moistened. One side of the huge pad is “soft” and the other has faint “bumps” for exfoliation. So, I felt like I was getting a portable face wash and scrub in one. And it had the Allure seal of approval. It isn’t bad. It’s a cleanser, it does its job. It removed grime and makeup but I find that I still need a toner to remove the last traces of makeup. The scent is “fresh” not soapy but “fresh”. The pads are pretty big and I’m sure if you wanted you could cut them in half to make a tub last longer.

Anyways, I’m not impressed by this product. It didn’t really do anything for my skin (no cleanser really does, they exsist to clean), it is expensive, and the pads are too big and bulky.

Weekly Cheap Secret:

Sometimes you just don’t mess with a classic. These are 5 items that I have used/use and really like. They are my “go to” products when the budget is tight because I want to save up and buy a Creed cologne or a new Serge Lutens like right now, haha.

Olay Active Hydrating Beauty Fluid Original– My great grandmother used this stuff everyday. She had great skin. I don’t know if I can give to credit to this pink, lightweight lotion or if it was just her luck, hope I have it too. This lotion is perfect for combo/normal skin. I use it at night in the summer usually. It keeps my skin feeling soft and not oily or dry. Many hate the fragrance. I love it. It is a very lowbrow violet. Its powderiness is so crude that I love it. If I could get this as a perfume, I would be very happy. A 4 oz. bottle retails for under $10.

Pond’s Classic Cold Cream– This is another of great-grandmother’s favorites. She used this stuff daily and so did my grandmother. It’s simple, nothing to it really with ingriedients like mineral oil and beeswax. It attacks makeup. I use this when I have put on more “face” than usual or when I am drier than usual like in the dead of winter. I wouldn’t recommend this for oily skins or even oily to normal skins. It is heavy and does “moisturize” after you wash it off. The 3.5 oz jar retails for under $5. I think it is so funny because one of the reviews on drugstore.com said grandma was right and now she uses this so she can buy expensive perfume. I promise that is not me! Somebody else is saving for niche fragrances…

Noxema Original Deep Cleansing Cream in the Jar– This stuff is much to harsh for my adult skin but I used to love this stuff as a teen (note, I had great skin, no zits back then and pretty normal skin). It’s tingly and still has that classic Noxema menthol aroma. This just screams clean ūüôā It cleans well and it is nice to use for “hot” skin. A big jar retails for under $5.

Dickinson’s Witch Hazel– Use it for whatever you want. I usually use it as a toner but it does make a great aftershave. I love it’s witch hazel aroma. Many do not. It smells so herbaceous and it is just one of those “classic” scents you either love or hate like a pine tar soap. I have normal skin and I use this stuff in the summer when I get a little more oily. The huge 16 oz bottle lasts forever and goes for $4. That is much cheaper than any department store toner!

Vaseline Petroleum Jelly– Yep, some people use this on their face. I have to say that this is a great multi-tasking product that often gets forgotten. It does great on lips, removes long-wearing makeups, smooths cuticles and feet, soothes windburn skin, keeps brows in place, and a ton of other things. I have read Jennifer Lopez uses this as a facial moisturizer. My grandmother does and she has great skin but I think she is just one of those people that is going to have great skin. No odors, but it is greasy. It’s vaseline. A big jar retails for under $5. And yes, I only buy the name brand.

Here is another cheap gift I bought. The set comes with six popular Bliss items. I like it but I think the L’Occitane Verbena to Go gift set from Sephora which is the same price is a much better buy. This kit has six super small items. Each item is one ounce and comes in a pretty cheap-o but one step up from a Ziploc baggie that is just there in case these things leak. The bottles are super small, one ounce is pretty tiny, but they are great for sampling or for airline travel. It comes with 5 Lemon + Sage items: Soapy Sap, Supershine Shampoo, Conditioning Rinse, Soap Slab, and Body Butter. This scent is a bit lemon zest with a hint of herb. I like the scent of L’Occitane Verbena better, it smells more “authentic”. The scent of the bliss stuff isn’t bad, I just prefer the other. This kit also contains a one ounce bottle of the Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. This stuff is nice and it is nice to have a travel bottle around. It smells like fake passion fruit. It won’t make you gag or anything I just thought it was an odd choice. I like these kinds of kits because the price is right and you do get to play with a lot of new stuff. I just wouldn’t buy one of these for myself. Now if there was a Blood Orange + White Pepper one, I would definitely pick a few of those up.

Of course I would go for a cleanser that has “essence” in the title. I like for all the products I use to have a pleasing aroma and I want something that I can look forward to using.

Burt’s Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser is a rich, glycerin based cleanser with a “vaseline” like texture. It smells of orange oil which kind of reminds me of furniture polish but in a good clean way, not a gross chemical way. The cleanser is enriched with olive oil, aloe vera, rosemary and orange oil. It is deep cleansing without leaving the skin dehydrated feeling. Actually afterward my skin feels “nourished”. I have normal/combination skin (towards the drier side) and this stuff does a great job. It cleans without making my drier patches feel drier. I had no allergic reactions to this product and no unusual breakouts. My husband likes this product too and he has thick man skin. It retails for $8 and you can get it at Target, most drugstores, drugstore.com, or burtsbees.com.

Like everything under the sun, I’m sure this product isn’t for everyone. Skincare is a risky business where one product works wonders on someone and makes another wonder why they bought it. It is very fragrant cleanser and has a texture unlike most deep cleansing or foaming face washes that most people use. Some people may dislike this. I would say it isn’t for very oily skins but I know people with very oily skins that use this and love it. It doesn’t dry their skin out and helps nourish and protect their skin from all their harsh prescription acne meds. I’ve used this when it was the dead of winter and my skin was flaky and raw. It really smoothed my skin. Plus, I enjoy the aroma and texture. It used to be in an aluminum toothpaste like tube which was annoying and wasted alot of product. Now it is in a plastic toothpaste tube that doesn’t leak as much. And I’m not sensitive to fragrance. Thank God.
