Mainstream Monday: Sniffing A Popular Fragrance

Victoria’s Secret Supermodel is a light-wearing fruity-floral fragrance. It isn’t something that I would wear. I find that it lacks a “wow” factor. But, it isn’t a bad fragrance. It’s pleasant enough although generic.

Of course, Victoria’s Secret hypes this fragrance up as super sexy. I don’t really see that. I sniff it and the word “sexy” doesn’t come to mind. I think more “casual”. This fragrance was a “partnership” with the cosmetic’s side of Victoria’s Secret and their sexy runway models, whatever that means. At first spritz this is a very berry fragrance. It isn’t a berry that I can recognize and I need to remind you that I live in the Pacific Northwest. I know the smell of many, many berries and their many stages of ripeness. This just smells like “berries”. It’s jammy. Something is musky and warm beside the berries. This is a “warm” fragrance. At times I get confused, thinking it is cedary. It reminds me of a Roberto Cavalli Fragrance, Oro, I think, that is discontinued. The maker doesn’t recognize this scent as being cedary but I can smell it there. After the m没re et musc variation fades, there is a tartness. It’s fruity and tart but not citrusy. It’s a berry tartness. This mixes into a creaminess that reminds me of a more grown-up version of Fruity Pebbles and milk. I think this is supposed to be peach blossom. It is more of a peaches n’ cream mixture than a floral peach blossom. This does dry down into a warm, creamy sandalwood base. It isn’t the most exciting sandalwood I have ever worn but it does work nicely with those berry top notes. The sandalwood dry-down is very comforting. It is a “generic” sandalwood but I like it because it wears so cozy close to the skin.聽 This isn’t a scent that I will go out and buy. I have a few things like it because I like blackberry/musk scents and I like L’Artisan Parfumeur better than this. Supermodel does manage to smell “clean”. This isn’t a bad fragrance especially coming from Victoria’s Secret. It isn’t offensive, but oh, that bottle. I am not a fan of the bottle. I find it very tacky.

I’m surprised that it is an EDP. I find that it fades quickly. I thought it was an EDT because it lasts less than 2 hours on me. Maybe my skin likes to devour Chinese berries, peach blossoms, and creamy sandalwood.

It comes in 2 sizes ranging in price from $39-$49. I would say that you would like this one if you like Bath and Body Works Black Raspberry Vanilla EDT, Trish McVoy#9 Blackberry & Vanilla Musk EDP, Philosophy Falling In Love EDT, L’Artisan Parfumeur Mure et Musc EDT, DKNY Juicy Berry Candy Apple EDP, Vera Wang Glam Princess EDT, La Prairie Silver Rain EDP, and/or Kenzo Amour Indian Holi EDP.

If you are a fan of Victoria’s Secret Garden Collection Love Spell then you should love this. This home oil totally reminds me of that loud VS blend of berries, peach, cherries, and jasmine. It’s the Secret Garden Body Spray for your home. Aromatique Citrus Plum Berry is a fruity-floral heavy on synthetic smelling stone fruits and berries with a hint of white flowers. It’s strong. I use it in my oil burner. I’m sure it is actually for refreshing potpourri but I’m not a potpourri kind of gal. A little of this oil mixed with water will make your home very fragrant for a long time. That is a great thing if you like the odor. I personally hate VS Love Spell. I’m so burnt out with it. Every girl my age used to use that stuff. It reminds me of high school girl’s locker rooms. That is a place I never want to return to, even if it is only a fragrance journey.

Like I said, if you are into the whole VS Secret Garden line or if you are a mega fan of Love Spell or you just want your home to spell like a berry heavy fruity-floral, then this is for you. It isn’t a horrible fragrance. It does smell pretty and girly, I just don’t want my home to smell this way. It is very fragrant, a little goes a long way, and it retails for about $9. I’m not wild about the bottle. It doesn’t have a dropper top and you have to use a seperate dropper that is included. I then always get Citrus Plum Berry all over my hands. This product is available at some department stores, specialty home stores, and Aromatique’s website.

Well even here in the PNW, summer is almost over. This doesn’t mean that the weather will get horrible (autumn is my favorite season).聽 It just means that we have a few more weeks of sunshine 馃檪 The brambles still have lots of ripe blackberries and will continue to for a few more weeks. I love blackberries. They are one of my favorite things of summer even if they signal the “end”. I love the smell of picking blackberries with the mix of leaves and dried out dead grass. I love the smell of sweet blackberries and their juiciness that stains your finger tips (why can’t I find a lipstain that color?). I love the smell of overripe blackberries. These do get almost musk like and floral. Since we have been renovating intensively, I haven’t had the time to bust out my favorite blackberry recipes. I was able to freeze a few reductions ranging from basic blackberry to blackberry, lemon, lavender which is amazing on angel food cake. We threw a few in salads and ate them by the handfuls. But, I didn’t make my sweets this year because life has been to hectic. Anyways, here is a guide of blackberry fragrances ranging in prices. Since blackberry is a musky fruity scent, it is often made more “sensual” by adding vanilla. I would love to find a blackberry scent that is more tangy and bitter and perhaps “living” but mixed with dried grass/hay, more of an “early” blackberry fragrance. My 2 favorites out of this list include: Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis because it is a bit “darker” than the others and L’Artisan Parfumeur M没re et Musc Extreme because it is a fruity scent that isn’t childish or teen.

Budget Blackberry Scents: Yves Rocher Les Plaisirs Nature M没re Sauvage/Blackberry is a single note blackberry fragrance. It is fruity and juicy. The largest EDT , 3.3 oz, goes for $11. It’s nice to have around for late summer. L’Aromarine M没re Musc Perfume Extract is a long wearing oil. It seems much more expensive than it is. It goes for about $10. A sweet and “young” blend of blackberry and vanilla (and light wearing) is Victoria’s Secret Pink Fruity & Bright聽 All-Over Body Mist. It retails for $15. To my surprise, I kind of like Bath and Body Works Midnight Pomegrante EDT. It’ a fruity blend including blackberries and cassis but it has musk and patchouli making it much richer and not as fruity. It goes for $26.50. They also have Black Raspberry & Vanilla EDT for the same price. This is a super sweet in a vanilla way, “berry” EDT. Sula Blackberry Blush EDP (not pictured) is a blackberry and vanilla blend with much needed florals. It’s simple and retails for $32 for 1 oz.

More Expensive Blackberry Scents: Mistral Wild Blackberry EDP is a fruity blackberry dessert type fragrance. It has zesty citrus notes and musk. The 1.7 oz goes for $50. Trish McVoy #9 EDP is sexy and heavy blackberry inspired scent with notes of vanilla and musk too. The 1.7 EDP goes for about $80. L’Artisan Parfumeur M没re et Musc Extr锚me is a rich fruity blend. It is much more “sensual” than the cologne and I would love to try the pure extract. It goes for $115 for 1.7 ounce. The Cologne is very green and fresh with blackberry and almost medicinal. I like it just as well. It has a time and a place. The smallest size is $95. Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis EDP is absolutely delicious. It is a late summer mix of blackberry and fig with smoky amber notes. It is heavenly. The 1.7 oz goes for $135. DKNY Delicious Night is a much more floral blackberry blend with freesia. The 1.7 oz goes for $55. Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Eau de Gantier EDT (not pictured) is a crisp citrus berry blend. Not sweet but refreshing but very light wearing. The 3.4 oz. goes for $110.

Other Great Blackberry Products: Lush Blackberry Bath Bomb is a fun product that is heavy on that blackberry musk scent. It goes for $6. Ulta 3-in-1 Shower Smoothie Blackberry Blast is one of those faux super fruity blackberry scents. It is a fun product that retails for about $15. Naturally Victoria’s Secret Blackberry & Tonka Bean Restorative Scrub is a faintly blackberry scented scrub. It does a good job and retails for $18. D.L. & Co. Cassis Diffuser is an amazing scent of blackberry and fig. I love this scent because it does such a good job of seasonal transitioning. It retails for $95.

The model’s look doesn’t look so great and she looks like she has a bit of a zombie complexion but I must say that the actual products are quite luxurious. They are beautiful and works of art. They are housed in lovely black Armani cases. The color scheme is mainly bronze and teal, a very popular combo it seems every summer.

EYES: I am in love with the Mediterranean Eyeshadow Palette. I would be. It is the most expensive item in the collection ($85). It contains four lovely powder shadows ranging from icy turquoise to shimmering sands. It also contains a bronzer powder. It is just a pretty kit. I occasionally fall for stupid products and I can’t exclude my fascination with The Sparkling Bronze Mascara Topcoat. It is a useless product but it sure is glamorous聽 and does what the name says. I can’t justify purchasing it at $26 馃槮聽 Two Smooth Silk Eye Pencils are featured in nice stone colors of jade and lapis lazuli. These go for $26. Maestro Mascara and Eyebrow Pencils have been relaunched. These go for $26.

LIPS: I love the Lip Wax which is a sheer, buildable bronzey “blush” for lips. It retails for $26. There are聽 Lip Shimmer lip glosses in shimmery sheer shades of bronze, nude, and blackberry. These go for $26 as well.

FACE & BODY: There is a Sienna Minerals Bronzing Palette. It contains a lovley mix match of earthy mineral shades of sienna, bronze, and ochre. It goes for $65. There is also a Sheer Bronzer in a deep shade that retails for $48. Body tints are back. Armani has a Bronze Mania Body Tints Bronzer which is a gel body bronzer. It goes for $75.

Overall, the collection contains a few super luxurious items. The colors are ho-hum and predictable: bronze and teal. I don’t have a problem with that, those colors are flattering on me. However, dark lips are a part of the collection and I love that. Sheer blackberry glosses really work in summer. I know I go to those in the late summer since that is when berries come out anyways.

Every now and then I will smell a fragrance on a blotter card that will make me cringe, this one gave me a toothache. It was like spraying raspberry jam, pecan pie and caramel onto a blotter card. It was quite shocking. I am writing a review and I must remind you that I did not dare wear this on my skin. I also like big bold florals and headshop patchouli. I am not your typical under 25 fragrance consumer but I do like some “sweet” things (check out the Demeter reviews) and I did fall madly in love with the original Juicy Couture EDP.

The bottle of Viva La Juicy is pretty and looks almost identical to the original except this one has a huge hot pink bow. It reminds me so much of their ugly velour jumpsuits since it has the gold accents that look like one of their 24K spray paint buttons or zippers that they add to their “sweats” looks. The bottle is heavy and hearty and I can’t complain about that. But, I will complain about the juice. I hate to be this person since we all have our opinions but I found this really gross. The floral notes did not stand out to me at all. I did not pick up on the gardenia or jasmine. This is the biggest difference between this one and the original. It wasn’t made grown-up by florals. Instead it smells of berries, not ripe blackberries hitting the grass on a hot, late summer day but of raspberry filled jelly doughnuts at 10 in the morning. It smells “sticky” like caramel and it reminds me of pecan pie or something. The company does list “praline” as a note. I am not wild about pralines so maybe that is why it just reminds me of a pie that I would never choose to eat. It smells of vanilla. (Like we needed anything else to sweeten this up with). This fragrance just smells like a Duncan Doughnuts has exploded. It smells like it would attract bugs and not in a good way. It isn’t like bees or butterflies will come to you because you smell of a fragrant garden. It is more of a roach or ant attractor because this is so gourmand.

This is a scent that my 14 year old sister would like and that is fine. I expect a young girl to like this. And that is fine for a young teen who is more into image or what the other kids are wearing at school. This is super “young”. 聽The notes are in your face and not very mature. It’s like Velveta Shells and Cheese. They aren’t bad but you must admit that it isn’t a very mature taste. It is something that adults can’t eat everyday but a kid could. If you like sweet foody scents then you may like this. (For example, if you like the LE Escada scents, Dior Miss Dior Cherie, Aquolina Pink Sugar, or sweet, foody scents by like Bath and Body Works). But, I do not think you will like this if you liked the original Juicy Couture or if you don’t want to smell like a pastry. The 1.7 ounce retails for $65 and the 3.4 ounce for $85. You can also get a 1/4 ounce roll-on for $16 if you only want to smell like dessert sometimes or if you want to smell like dessert on the go.

I have a thing for dark lipstick. It is a bit tricky and intimidating but that is why I love it. It’s dramatic. I would like to say that I wear it during the cooler months but to be honest, I like to be taboo and sport it in the warmer months as well. I love a deep, dark, berry stained pout. I love to feel vampy like Theda Bara’s image. I like to feel a bit “runway”. And frankly, I am a closet goth. This is my way of saying I’m OK with the cruel, cruel world.

Dark lipsticks and lip colors are so tricky because of skintone. However, I think that anybody can get away with it if you possess enough attitude. I don’t care if you are dark with gold undertones or ghostly pale with a visible vein road map. It works. It just takes some playing around and lots of confidence. Dark lips create a “harsh” look and you must be able to deal. It does show more imperfections. Lips must be smooth and healthy. Dark lipsticks will cling to dry spots resulting in an unattractive splotchy look. So keep lips moisturized. It is good for them anyways. I’m not going to create any other rules with the rest of the makeup when you wear darks. I like it with a perfectly matte face, sheer nude eyes with or without mascara. I like it with kohl rimmed eyes like Miss Bara’s. I like it with dewey cheeks or matte cheeks. It just doesn’t matter. Just make sure lips are moisturized.

For the Ballsy: I’m talking deep, dark, and dramatic. These colors are rarely for the meek. These are the colors for maximum drama. I’m talking you would wear black lipstick. None of this YSL glamour black gloss. I’m talking something like NYX Lipstick in Penelope, a rich angsty shock your Christian mother black. It retails for $3.50 so that you will even have enough money left to purchase black nail polish and a pentagram necklace 馃檪 from Hot Topic. Lips need to be smooth. Coat this stuff on, a lip primer does help from keeping this stuff smooth. NYX also has a wonderful deep burgundy called Almost Black. It has a bit more depth than the straight up black stuff. I also like Egg Plant for a dark purple look. All retail for $3.50. MAC has a nice Lipstick in Cyber which is a black purple with a satin finish. It is a bit hard to work with because it has too much “slip”. It retails for $14. Make Up For Ever has a lovely glimmery navy lipstick in Pearly Blue Black and it retails for $19. I also like their Blueberry which is a deep berry. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry is a deep blood wine lipstick with a bit of sheen. It retails for $7.99.

For the Closet Goth: For a deep lip with a bit of color, try YSL Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Lipstick in Forbidden Burgundy, a rich deep berry. Plus, the packaging will make you feel like a queen. As it should with its $34 price tag. One of my favorites is MAC Viva Glam III which is a matte deep plum. It is dark but it looks “classic” and not a bit like a purple crushed velvet cape. It retails for $14. Another one that is nice is the new Revlon Matte Collection Lipstick in Wine Not. It is a deep, classic matte wine that retails for $7.99. Max Factor Lipfinity 3D Maxwear Lipcolor in Violet Vamp is a nice medium wine with a purple shimmer topcoat that retails for $8.99 (no longer available in the US). Lipstick Queen Wine Sinner Lipstick is one of my favorite blackberry wine shades. It retails for $18. Also I love Chanel Creme Lipstick in Vamp which retails for $28.

For the Wusses: Go for something dark but really sheer. It makes you feel edgy without getting strange stares from your co-workers. I like Urban Decay Apocalypse which is a sheer blackberry in killer packaging. It has a soft vanilla fragrance and retails for $22. One of the best for this category is Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. It’s so popular for its edge but wearable factor. It feels great on the lips and retails for $14. Black Radiance has a sheer deep-red聽 brown Radiant Lip Gloss in Mocha Madness. It retails for $2.99 and looks great over other colors to “deepen” them. A lip stain is always a way to get color without harshness. Try something like Urban Decay Lip Envy in Greedy which retails for $17. Lipstick Queen Big Bang Theory Lip Gloss in Black Hole is a lovely deep wine shimmer. It is buildable for more or less drama. It retails for $20. Or for the daring, wouldn’t you love to bust out a black lipstick during a board meeting or something? Try Lipstick Queen Black Tie Optional Lipstick for $18. It is super sheer, and yes black. It just adds a tiny bit of darkness.

Sometimes I buy things and I really don’t know why I did. This little Eau de Toilette spray is one of those things. It was cheap, $5 for less than an ounce spray. It was summer and I thought for some reason that I would like to smell like strawberries. Why? I have never wanted to smell like strawberries but I guess I thought it would smell fresh for summer. Fruit smells are so difficult to replicate. I know when I added this to my cart I was thinking of farmer’s markets strawberries, slightly ripening and softening in the little baskets under the warm summer sun. I could smell their sickly sweetness that was just strawberry. I know that capturing a fruit is virtually impossible but I thought that it couldn’t go that wrong. I just wanted the “memory” or the “atmosphere” of strawberry. This kind of does that. It is sweet, but not as disgusting as strawberry Jolly Ranchers or big globs of strawberry bubble gum but it does come close. This is sweet and not very realistic. It smells of strawberry in an artificial sense. I’m not upset, I think I payed less than $5 for it. I’ve bought Escada fragrances that were more disgusting. This fixes that berry fix and did teach me a lesson. This would make a nice EDT spray for a little girl or even a teen girl. Or for someone that likes those Escada fragrances that I speak of. I also want to add that strawberries are trying to kill me as I found out this past weekend over a pound of ripe strawberries that I am allergic to them. Argghh! So maybe I’ll come to love this fragrance since I can’t enjoy the real thing.
