August 2008

I bought this on a whim because I like the packaging and was making an online order and this stuff was only $1.99. I ended up really liking the fragrance of this perfumed body lotion. It is hard to describe since it is a lotion but it has a really soft, innocent powdery rose scent with a hint of something earthy like oakmoss. In fact it wore perfectly with my L’Aromarine Mousse de Chêne fragrance oil. It also wears nicely with single note rose fragrances and I’m sure it wears nicely with Sweet Honesty. The scent isn’t offensive and smells clean and girly.

It has a thicker texture but not creamy like a body butter. It is moisturizing and needs to be rubbed in thoroughly. The packaging is cute and has been the same for a while which I love. I actually left it out and about and not hidden in the linen closet. But, what is so awesome about it is the price. Most of the time you can buy it on special for $1.99 or even 99¢. It retails for $5.25 which is still a pretty good price. It is a little small and lasted only a few weeks for me with daily use. But, at least I used it. I’d love to purchase another one in the future.

I really don’t know what to say other than I love this new Make Up For Ever 12 Color Case Palette. This kit is packed with 12 bright and creamy colors that can be used on eyes, lips and cheeks. These make for some awesome eye liners. The robin’s egg blue, electric yellow, and bright spring green make some of my favorite non-traditional eyelienrs. The coral looks so hot on lips, eyes, and cheeks. The metallic silver and gold are fab on eyes and lips. And the dark brown and black are the perfect precise eyeliners for every day. Flash Colors are chock full of mind blowing pigment, have the best texture and really stay. I love them. These colors can be mixed to make your own custom color. This compact is perfect for makeup bags and travel. It sells for $93 and is available at sephora.com. I love it!

OK, I am not a connoisseur of expensive cigars. And I rarely smoke cigars. They’re a special occasion thing. But, I do know that I love the smell of tobacco. I love the way it smells when it is growing, I love the way it smells when it is drying and I even love the way it smells when being smoked. It is a robust fragrance that is so beautiful. Demeter states that their Humidor fragrance is “a balanced and irresistible combination of tobacco, spices and ozone.” This is so true. Humidor is both sweet and spicy. It is pure tobacco. It is strong, powerful and crisp. It isn’t stale or smoky. It is very complex for a Demeter fragrance. It resembles the many fragrant elements and flavors of an unsmoked cigar. This is a longer lasting scent than most Demeter fragrances. First it comes on strong and then it dries down to a lighter, softer version of the exact same scent. It keeps its spiciness and crispness. It is a really beautiful fragrance. I just wear it by itself and it smells wonderful. It has an ok lasting power but doesn’t wear long like most Demeter fragrances.

I was bored out of mind the other day and remembered that I had a few drugstore items on my list. I wandered around a bit because I usually order from drugstore.com and felt lost in an actual store. Anyways, I stumbled across the great Nivea Lip Care A Kiss Of Flavor Lip Balm. Typically, I use Rosebud Salve or Guerlain Divinora, so maybe that is why these are really “fun” compared to my other choices. These Nivea balms are identical to the Labello Tinted and Flavored Lip Balms that I used to buy in Germany. (The Passion Fruit Labello is Nivea Passion Fruit.) I loved Labello because of the awesome smoothness and amount of product in the tube. Nivea is no disappointment. The tube is crammed full of smooth, lip nourishing glossy balm. It is enhanced with jojoba and almond oils and shea butter just like Labello. Cherry has a punch of juicy cherry flavor and a sheer healthy red tint that is your lips but better. Nivea Passion Fruit has a yummy passion fruit flavor and a hint of violet that really works for my skintone and adds a very sheer, natural color to my lips. The texture is so smooth, non-sticky, not heavy or greasy. The hints of color and flavors are so fun without being Bonne Bell Lip Smackers. I am so happy to find these in the States. The drugstore had a Hint of Shimmer too which looks like a champagne shimmer balm. I bought mine for 1.99 and drugstore.com has it’s listed at $2.49. They are awesome and I’m going back for Hint of Shimmer. This is a big deal because Labello retails for $7.95 to $8.95 plus ridiculous shipping charges on smallflower.com and I am so happy that I found Nivea! Heck, the packaging is even the same.

I really want this little black book of beautiful lips. This is my dream come true. There are so many options crammed into a portable space, making one feel like the ultimate makeup artist. This limited edition Bobbi Brown Artist Palette for Lips can be purchased at Neiman Marcus for $200. Ouch, that is pricey but in its defense you get 42 lipstick shades in three of Bobbi Brown’s wonderful formulas. You get 21 of her Lip Color ranging from Pale Pink to Brownie and everything in between. You get 11 of the Creamy Lip Color which is a moisturizing formula ranging from Blue Raspberry to Nectar. Finally, you get 10 of the Lip Sheer formula ranging from Bare to Black Plum. Plus you can mix and match and do whatever you want to with it. It comes with a retractable lip brush also. This isn’t in my budget right now but I’d love to have it. I spend that much (+) on tubes here and there and they take up so much space. I wear lots of colors and this would be perfect for me. You can pick one up at neimanmarcus.com and they are limited edition.

I have been in a “figgy” mood lately and have been on a search for the most perfect fig scents. Maybe I am a little homesick thinking of huge ripe green figs hitting the ground to land on the hot red Georgia soil. I am a fig nut. I love them. The thing I am finding out about fig fragrances are that they are more of a “fantasy” scent made by perfumers. Which is fine with me if it doesn’t smell just like a fresh fig. I find myself liking the fig “idea” and the aroma that perfume manufactures have made based on the overall interpretation of fig.

I think that L’Artisan Parfumeur Premier Figuier is gorgeous. It is what I was looking for. It’s like my homesickness, it is actually prettier than the fig itself. I miss the “idea” of the South, not actually the South. When I smell Premier Figuier it is beautiful, more so than the actual figs that I bought at the store. The company describes their scent as “conjuring up an image of the entire tree.” And it succeeds. The initial spritz is fresh, green, leafy. It is playing in the trees when their is no fruit present. Then the fruit happens and it ripens. The fruit is thick, milky and ready to eat. It smells rich but still green. The middle notes are the harvest. It is “heavy” like a ripe fig ready to hit the ground. It is made more robust by almond milk and a hint of milky coconut water. Making it the harvest, grilled figs or fig jam. Finally, it dries down to a woodsy, earthy scent with enough fig to make it special. It is the cooler months when there is nothing on the tree but the bark. It feels warm and inviting even though there isn’t anything there to make it special. You just know that it is. It is warmed by sandalwood and it wears closely to the skin. It feels like it is apart of you, like the memories of playing barefoot in the fig trees. It is an eau de toilette and wears for about 4/5 hours. I love it. It brings back the memories that I needed without actually being my memories. It is more romantic than being in the hot Georgia sun being attacked by fire ants and living in the Projects. It is the romantic view that my memory needs. This is a very special fragrance. It is fresh, rich, sweet and woodsy. I feel like it was made for me. The L’Artisan Parfumeur website states:

“Why Premier ? Because it is the very first perfume based on the fig theme! Green like its sweet-smelling leaves, milky like the sap of the tree, fruity like the soft flesh of the fig; woody like its branches and trunk…It is unique as it conjures up an image of the entire tree. As surprising as a first kiss, as caressing as shadows on a bright, sunny day, Premier Figuier has captured, in its bottle, a whole host of summer memories… exactly under the fig tree!”

It is so true, that is an excellent description that I can’t beat. It is all of my summer memories of childhood. It is a “fig”. I really need this scent. The 50 ml retails for $95 and the larger 100 ml for $135. The soap goes for $18, body cream is $65, shower gel is $45, and the large candle is $60 and the small candle is $20. You can get it at barneys.com or artisanparfumeur.com.

The packaging is simple but adorable like most Phiolosophy products. This is a new Lip Shine Trio set: The Soda Fountain. It contains three yummy and fizzy lip glosses that are packed with the right amount of shine and flavor. There is Cherry Cola which smells like the real thing with a hint of burgundy shine. There is Root Beer which you can feel the tickle of bubbles and it has a hint of brown shine. There is Fruit Punch which is very fruity and sweet with a hint of red shine. The texture of the gloss is nice and does pack a flavor. It is a fun product even though Bonne Bell makes similar items for dirt cheap. This product is a little more grown up than Lip Smackers and the cost is more. The 3 piece kit goes for $28 and makes a really cute gift. You can get it at sephora.com or philosophy.com.
